Not a terrible hire but not one that is any better than the AAF hires. Michigan isn’t upset Pep is leaving whatsoever

Michigan hiring others this January was a sign that there would be staff overhaul, which now is common within the Power 5.

I'd hire Pep over Tim Lewis, Kevin Coyle, Mike Singletary and Rick Neuheisel

I was too young for XFL 1.0, the only things I remember were He Hate Me and the guy getting injured on the first scramble thing, so the fact LA got their championship gear partway through the fourth quarter is funny.

Side note, SB Nation has some really good video series. There's this series The Worst, there's Rewinder and then they have Jon Bois who does Pretty Good and Chart Party.

The kind of mark they play to.  :P

I never said that the games were staged, though.  I wondered if he would be tempted to create certain storylines for his league if attention was waning.  Which is certainly plausible, considering that it's his stock in trade.

The #1 storyline he seemed to be crafting with XFL 2.0 is that all his players are "true-blue Americans" with no criminal records and who wouldn't even think to peacefully protest. As I've said before, I'm just not sure the whole "kneeling-gate" will even be much of a thing by next year. It really wasn't even much of a story anymore last season, because, as I expected, it was largely a manufactured non-drama and people have become distracted by other, more important, things.

That was pretty much the crux of his presentation about the league's revival last year. I just don't see this league working out, especially if the AAF takes off.

I don’t think you’re wrong. Hadn’t even considered that one of their big angles was the now largely forgotten kneeling thing.

Add in that even if AAF isn’t a raging success, they locked up their players on 3 year deals which means they got first dibs at what’s out there.

I’m probably not going to have much interest in either of these leagues, but if given the choice between the AAF and and the new XFL, I’ll take the AAF 1000 times out of 1000. The initial vibe of the XFL being the “anti protest, “TRUE” patriot” league was about as big of a turnoff as can possibly be. It was so obviously pandering to the mouth breathing Murcia crowd that was mad at the NFL. It was really rather disgusting. That and I don’t really care how “legitimate” the XFL is trying to be. Their even loose association with the WWE leaves a rather pungent stench that I don’t think they’re going to be able to fully separate themselves from.

I’ll at least give the AAF a shot. The XFL can kiss my ass.

Kinda the way I feel as well. I'm admittedly biased toward the AAF due to them having a team in my city anyway (though XFL arguably avoided San Diego because AAF beat them to the punch here when you consider their only non-NFL city team is in St. Louis who similarly just lost a team). But yeah the association with WWE, even tangentially rubs me just as wrong now as it did nearly 20 year ago. And their bravado about being anti-kneeling and "real" football once again smacks me as just a slightly more refined version of the same BS they tried to feed to us 20 years ago. Add to that the fact they're now second or third to the table on obtaining talent, and concerns have to be there about the quality of player they're getting even more so than all the leagues already operating including CFL and AAF.

Honestly until proven otherwise I think XFL has done themselves a big disservice by placing their teams in cities which already have NFL teams (among a bunch of other non football teams in most cases) as well.

The AAF has a better shot at success because it has a year head start on the XFL and their relationship with the NFL could help them in the long run.  Some of the people involved in the league behind the scenes are still involved in the NFL in some way as analysts for NFL games in the fall, plus the AAF recently hired Dean Blandino and Mike Pereira as officiating consultants and they are the rules analysts for Fox NFL games.  It doesn't hurt that they have a deal with the NFL Network as well.

Yeah I'm with you on the XFL. When Vinnie Mac pledged to clamp down on players exercising their first amendment rights, that was the deal breaker. Oh yeah, and I say good luck to Vince trying to field enough players for eight teams.

Alliance is growing on me because of how much faster their games go with fewer commercials and no kickoffs.

The 20 minutes of the Legends and Fleet game I watched seemed competently played enough. I've sat through dozens of college games that were less watchable. The only thing that felt really bush league was they let a dark gray jersey play a purple jersey and it was kind of hard to watch.

Seeing what the AAF is going through money wise, I have one word of advice of Vince McMahon. CANCEL. IT. NOW.

Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends. Sounds like something from a Rocky & Bullwinkle story arc.

If he wants to do that? Then Vince’s best bet is to stack at least one team with guys who all have criminal records and who kneel for the anthem to draw some good old fashion cheap heat from all the other home crowds.

Tampa has a team in the XFL, I volunteer Tampa. Former WWE wrestler and UnAmerican stable member Christian lives down here. He can be the hype man!

Give me $$$ Vince I just made the XFL good.

In all seriousness? It seems like Vince saw the NFL at the height of the kneeling drama and “low” ratings (which were still very high in relation to their closest competiton) and thought “the time to strike is now!”

Of course the kneeling thing was a non-issue last season and look at that...ratings rebounded.

So it seems like Vince’s efforts to “give football back to red blooded ‘Muricans!” is going to ring a bit hollow in a year.

With rumors that Vince is known to fly off the handle and get into fits of rages, I wonder how he's going to react to New York playing in a near empty Met Life Stadium?  Or Tampa playing in a near empty Raymond James?  Or Seattle in a near empty CenturyLink?  ,

They'll tarp off the side of the stadium opposite the hard camera. He's used to that.

That's one of the reasons I don't get his insistence on having all but one team in cities hosting NFL teams (not to mention a ton of other teams as well). They're not going to draw crowds any larger than the AAF (and are more likely to draw even smaller crowds in such crowded market places). Say what you will about the failure rate in cities the AAF chose like Birmingham. But at least if they somehow turn it around they're not competing against a whole hell of a lot.
