The first interesting part is that Vince had some other company negotiate the TV deal. Hopefully that means he won't tinker and try to get overly involved with Production since Fox and ESPN are the ones handling all the costs and such.

The other brilliant thing is that with the number of games on ESPN (and even FS1) think about on a random Saturday and Sunday during this time a sports bar not having ESPN on to automatically get eyes on it. Its going to get a lot of exposure, even of the ratings are not stupid big.

The exposure element of the TV deal is nice, but the XFL had a sweetheart TV deal the last time around and the league went under after a year regardless.

If their product comes off as NFL-lite, it's not going to matter what network they're on because nobody is going to watch once the new car smell wears off.

Vince Mcmahon built the wwe tv empire buying weekend tv time like his shows were Ronco infomercials The xfl tv deal is interesting because of the number of eyes capable of viewing and the networks pay production

Yea I was thinking that, but the product is supposed to be better this time.

I'm assuming you didn't read.  The networks are just paying for production and broadcasting costs - not paying a rights fee.  There's no risk, only reward.  If the league goes defunct, then the networks haven't lost anything.

Sorry to break this to you, but Vince McMahon and the Disney/ESPN execs know more about business than you.

Yes I know they do.  Vince of course has the money to keep it going, but how long will the networks keep throwing almost half a mil at a low rated show?

$500K for national weekend content is pretty damn inexpensive, especially when you can still sell advertisements.  Saturdays/Sundays at 2PM, what is the local ABC affiliate typically airing? Infomercial for an air fryer or a vacuum?   Local car dealer?  I/E programming? A 20-year old rom-com?

Unlike the AAF, which only had 14 spaces for networks to sell, XFL can double that and still be less than half a typical NFL game has (85). Plus, AAF on CBS was getting $75K per each :30 sec ad, so the FOX and ABC can demand that or slightly more going by that one AAF game on network TV and its demos.

The XFL is farther along at this point than the other spring football leagues announced.  As I said, some of the leagues have been dormant with no news for months and in the case of the Spring League of American Football, they haven't been active in two years.   The FFL this week announced another former player, but again, no money guy.  The FFL is a bit short sighted.  Where is the money for that league going to come from?  I know the AAF has money issues, but the league shut down after 8 weeks instead of after the first week.

Right before I started my first semester at Arizona State, they hired June Jones to be their head football coach. The student body, alumni, and season ticket holders damn near rioted and the boosters threatened to pull funding, so they canned him immediately and went with Todd Graham instead.

Yeah, nice hire

Did Todd Graham fare a little bit better than June Jones at ASU?

Jones leaving isn't really a shock to Hamilton and he was probably gone after this season anyways. He had just been demoted to associate head coach and OC this offseason because Hamilton hired an assistant head coach prior to last season and then promoted the assistant to head coach a few months ago to stop him from being poached by BC or Toronto. The Ticats also hired a receivers coach who had previously been an OC for Hamilton and Toronto and they just named that guy the new OC right after the announcement Jones was leaving.

For those who don't follow the CFL, Jones was hired by Hamilton as the assistant head coach five games into the 2017 season, right after Hamilton had lost 60-1 to the Stampeders, a game I was at. Then 22 days later, the Hamilton head coach stepped down to focus solely on his position as VP of Football Operations and Jones was promoted to head coach (pay no attention to the fact the Ticats were 0-8 at the time and the coach couldn't really be fired).

One of his first moves only four days after being promoted, was hiring Art Briles. Then when people were like "Hey, maybe don't do that", the CFL blocked the hire only hours after it happened and a joint statement was issued by Hamilton and the CFL saying the hire has been officially blocked and Briles wasn't joining the team. What is Briles up to nowadays? Maybe Jones will try to hire him again, this time seeing if Vince and the XFL will let it happen?

Jones did turn the SMU program around.  Sure it wasn't to the levels of the Pony Express Days, but they didn't totally suck.  He just couldn't keep a QB around for more than a few years

Art Briles is coaching in Italy.

June Jones is credited for turning around SMU.  They went to 4 straight bowl games his first four years there and in 2009 he took them to their first bowl game since 1984, pre-death penalty.  His time there did not end well though.

Jones contract was pulled about five minutes after they offered it to him. Graham had some bright spots but was mostly a dud.

I'm not sure if you're talking about Jones or Graham here, but I think it works either way.

I remember at the time thinking oh cool! I’ve heard of him! That’s... kinda meh. And then they ended up going with Graham and I was like dafaq is this guy?

Point is, ASU ended up with a really mediocre coach, and he was still probably a much better hire than June Jones.
