Cincinnati Reds: Time For A Change?

Exactly.  It was a reintroduction, to be sure. But it was not BFBS in the same way as, say, the Mets.

Of course it was.  Adding black into a color scheme to sell merchandise is the very definition of BFBS.

Even if they were reintroducing black from an old color scheme, it would still be BFBS.  But as has been pointed out, those old Reds jerseys were red, white, and navy blue.

Heritage Auctions has some good pictures of gamers like this 1963-64 Pete Rose home jersey and this 1966 road jersey, and in the large photos you can see that the trim color is blue.

Even the arm trim:

I wonder if the team is making any attempt to gauge fan reaction to the various throwbacks they're wearing this season, perhaps to provide some guidance toward a future change in uniforms?  If so, I certainly hope the Twitter love for the vests doesn't catch their attention.  I hate vests as baseball jerseys with a passion, and the fact that some of the players have been wearing them without undershirts makes them hideous.  MLB should require undershirts with vests.

I’m a big fan of (true) vests for baseball jerseys and would love to see more of them here and there across the league, with the condition that undershirts are mandatory of course. In my opinion, the Pirates should absolutely be in vests full-time and the Reds are close to that category for me as well. Should the Reds do it, it’ll work best in my opinion if it’s red heavy with minimal black (or none at all, I could go either way), and I’d go so far as to say a white cap at home also.

You had me until the last bit. I don’t like white caps, and I think that the early 90s look would be way better with red (which they thankfully changed to later on, although there was too much black there).

I hope the club is evaluating options.  I’m very much in favor of going with the 69-71 design but I know that is too much to ask for.  If the team really wants black as a secondary color so that they can use it in merchandising it would be nice if they could use it exclusively on the away uniform and BP shirts and caps. Leave the home uniform as is and if you want a Sunday alt then maybe you can include a vest

Something like this.  A reds uniform should be really easy to do. I’m conceding on the away uniform. If it were up to me I’d do strictly red and white.  The black is so minimal on this road concept it doesn’t show all that much and it enables merchandising options

I feel about vests the same way I feel or felt about powder blue road uniforms and white front panel caps.  It's cool when one team does it, slightly less cool when two more join in, and total crap when half a dozen or more join the bandwagon.

And the Reds need to drop the black immediately.

I remember reading an article (which I tried desperately to find but couldn't) during the past year where one of the Reds' front office members, I believe a Castellini, said that the Reds were the only team to have a Red/Black/White color scheme. That comment tells me that black is here for the immediate future. For me, black isn't the problem, it does add depth to the set and provide more options (there are at least 162 games...); the problem is the use of black.

Either use it or don't.  Using it as a drop shadow, or a black brim on the road doesn't count, or a memorial arm band for that matter. If you are going to claim to be a red/black/white team, then do it all the way. Not an easy way to describe this without showing it, so I will show it here, unless it's not permitted in which case please remove.

This isn't my favorite concept that I've done for Cincinnati, and I don't know that I love the black, but if black is a team color, this is a more appropriate way to use it. I'm partial to the pre-Sansabelt  set myself, maybe they do that and add a pant stripe.  Just my 2 cents.

This is my concept from a few years ago

Basically the 1990 uniforms with buttons, Mr Redlegs on the sleeve, and a red alternate. If they switched to these uniforms it would be equivalent to winning the world series for me.

To the Bolded Part, absolutely 100% Agreed!  LOVED the Pirates '01 - '08 Uniforms, that is how a Baseball uniform should look! I would also add that Pants are worn to the Knees and stir-up socks be worn as well

A million times yes.  I’d like to subscribe to your newsletter and help you make this a reality.

The Reds are such a strange case. Their current set was such a HUGE improvement over the mess they had before, and I really did like them a lot. But they’ve just aged so poorly. They’re bland, uninspiring, and totally stale. It’s frustrating because they’re just a few small tweaks (drop the black, return to block fonts, as have been stated before) from looking incredible.

I think @McCarthy said something a few years ago I totally agree with. They should’ve just been an all red version of the Dodgers/Yankees,

in that they change relatively little and keep it simple. Everything they’ve ever tacked on to their simple look over the years (pinstripes, black, extra outlines, drop shadows, weird font bevels, etc) has just added bulk and weighed it down.

I'm not really sure how you'd top this;

No topping the roads. But I would top the homes by replacing the logo with the one seen here.

But apart from that, they'd never need to change again. The Reds should treat their uniforms with the dignity and importance that the Red Wings do in hockey.  Enough of the weird fonts, black trim, and other gimmicky bullcrap.
