New Era brings back U.S.-made wool 5950s for "Retro Classic" line

I picked up a teal Marlins and kelly green A’s wool throwback back in November, and I really like the feel and look of them. The A’s is probably my current favorite, and I especially like them because they don’t gave the New Era branding on the side.

so far only the Yankees, Angels and Braves are accurate out of this collection. BTW I grabbed both Giants and the Yankees from Lids

They went with this

instead of

I bought the Marlins all teal cap because I, for some shocking reason, didn't have already one but it has it's inaccuracies though of course virtually no one realizes it and the cap just looks great regardless. I get compliments for wearing it but I can't foresee the day some random person at the grocery store goes "hmmm, why is that F not off centered?"

The fish off center is the least of your problems here, the fins are inaccurate ask our pal @tubby34  about it

The US-made Low Profile 5950s seem to be more consistent, size-wise, than the high-crown Chinese-made ones.  However, as others have stated, I have to try on a half dozen before I can get one that fits right.  The 3930's, while not my first choice, at least fit consistent with the stretch sizing.

hate the high crown 5950. The only crown that should be elevated is if you are an actual monarch and you rule the country, then your crown can be as high as the ceiling. /s

The Phillies maroon cap only had the batterman during spring training 92, so only 2 months of its life, and there was no light blue in it. Also the squacho was white. Not hard to get that one right.

The only inaccuracy on the Pirates BP one, and it's not enough to ruin the hat for me, is the batterman is black and yellow, and on the original it was black and red.  But the hat feels the same as the one that I had almost 20 years ago when they originally came out.

EDIT ADDED: And I found one of the original ones.  The front logo looks larger on the original, and I was right about the batterman being red on the original.  I will say though that the yellow and black is definitely an improvement.

Dont think the Yankee caps are accurate - pretty sure they were using raised embroidery before the batterman logo was added to the back.

I meant by how accurate they replicate the logo and size. I have an 91-93 one of my first fitted and the logo is pretty flat, but then I have a 78 that looks semi-raised so New Era being New Era I guess

Absolute trash. This line has been out for over a month... at least the Padres cap that I had been seeking for so long

The navy is off. The original logo was raised and was bigger. The squatchee is supposed to be white.

Also, the A's never wore this

So I find it problematic to release these as "retros" and yet have so many inaccuracies.

Some of them are correct and I am intrigued but overall, very disappointing.

Go A's!

Yeah most of these are absolute garbage. There are a handful that are really good, though. I picked up that Marlins BP cap with the M Fish logo and it fits ok. I kinda want that Brewers cap, too.

The dude who arranged for these to be made for Lids is an absolute tool, though. People have let him know on Twitter about many of the inaccuracies and he just blocks them. Lids is run by the biggest clowns in the world. This line could be SO awesome, but these morons can’t keep their egos in check and have basically ruined it. Hat Club put out a ton of retro wool caps to counter this and they’ve totally hammered these half assed “classics”.

I went to Lids at lunch today and they had quite a few of these in the store.  The sizing is akin to last year's Diamond Era hats (run a 1/8 size larger than older hats).  The logo on the Padres hat above was TINY!  I had an original hat from that time and the logo was not that small.

Go Astros!

Go Texans!

Go Rockets!

Go Javelinas!

Same. I own the original one have seen this new one from Lids. It's just awful how this new one is so different with the sizing, color and other details.

Go A's!

I've found two companies that do seem to do "retro" caps pretty well: '47 Brand and American Needle. The former even uses transparent thread, which New Era doesn't seem to, so that caps with multiple colored panels have color-matched (or invisible) threading. With presumably the income New Era gets, you'd think they'd be able to have better retro caps than these. If the smaller companies can get it right, why can't New Era?

That's the first, and by far my favorite, series of BP caps they're trying to recreate.  My primary Twins cap is from that set (because it was the only way to get the "TC" at the time).  I love that "neo-mesh" (or whatever) material.  Plus, most of the designs are not too "out there" (Oakland and a couple of others).  It looks pretty nice; though nice job sticking the big tag in front of the historically-inaccurate New Era logo.

As for the missed colors...why?  It reminds me of my very first post in 2004 about the NHL Center Ice Collection (I think that is what it was called) and how I could not consider buying and otherwise sharp North Stars jersey because the star was backwards (i.e., the top point pointed the wrong way).  It was all I could see, though most people would not notice.  Same with this...people like us just can't get past it.  And in both cases, there's no excuse.

Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse."
