Rite of Spring 2018-“What happens in the playoffs stays in the playoffs”

A Vegas vs Tampa Finals (gross) sounds like a series that would make the NBA spontaneously combust. Does the NHL care about ratings like the NBA does? Does anyone actually bother watching hockey enough for it to matter?

I know this stupid Vegas run has attracted a lot of dumb casual fans who know so little about the game that they think the puck is made out of metal, but there’s absolutely no chance a Vegas death run to the cup would be better ratings-wise than having a more established team there.

Finals is going to be Winnipeg vs. Tampa.

And Tampa's going to ban Winnipeg Jerseys from parts of their arena. :P

Red Sox: 8    Celtics: 17    Bruins: 6    Patriots: 5

Preds up 2-0 in Winnipeg, and Subban takes an undisciplined penalty in the third period. Stop me if you've heard this one before...

There's only 1 Cup winner left in the playoffs- Tampa Bay- but that was so long ago (2004, Dead Puck Era) and nobody on these Bolts remains that I don't think anyone would be annoyed if the Lightning own the Cup.

I'd be annoyed. 14 years isn't a very long time. Plus, they have the worst uniforms left in the playoffs (Washington has ugly piping, yes, but at least they aren't ripping off another team).

I guess we know where this is headed....WPG, one of Canada's 7 home clubs in the NHL, loses Game 7 on the road in a U.S. market.

Typical.

Whiteout ends on Wednesday night.

25 seasons with no Cup Parade down a Canadian city's streets.

Same boring pro-U.S. crap as usual.

Rules changed by the NHL head office against Canada's clubs as they go along.

Screw that.

Just think about the Penguins or Blackhawks or SF Giants or the Red Sox or Patriots winning three pro championships in that time.

I was 10 in June 2004. I :censored: ing loved it, but I'd love it even more being old enough to appreciate the difficulties of what followed and what it took to get back.

The only way I'm watching the Stanley Cup Finals is if Vegas are Winnipeg are involved.

But even then, only if it doesn't interfere with NBA playoffs.

I truly appreciate my Giants winning not one but three World Series Championships in my lifetime. I don't expect it again anytime soon. Never take anything for granite because you might never see it happen again.

I'm on the Caps' bandwagon. Winnipeg is the only acceptable substitute.

As for Vegas, their run is still all the planets aligning temporarily. They don't have a farm system to speak of. They didn't get a #1 (or 2 or 3) overall pick like most expansion teams. They'll have to re-sign a ton of guys soon, because they were planning on trading everything not nailed down. They have something that's working right now, and you never know when they'll have a team this good again. I wouldn't mind Vegas winning, but they're behind Washington and Winnipeg.

Watch this finally be the year Washington gets past their bullying older brother in Pittsburgh, only for Tampa/Boston/maybe Toronto make them their b-tch in the ECF. That would totally happen.

I'll be pulling for Washington moving forward, but I'm concerned they expended too much energy both physically and emotionally in finally beating Pittsburgh that they're going to have a letdown against Tampa who is probably the hottest team in the playoffs right now and just easily dispatched a Bruins team who I would say is scarier than the Capitals.

Can't help but feel like we're going to see a Vegas-Tampa Bay final.

I'm very concerned about playing Tampa for a number of reasons.  Getting Wilson and (hopefully) Backstrom back helps, but Tampa's top-to-bottom depth for both forwards and defensemen easily is better than the Caps'.  They've got several lines that can score on you and a good goalie.  And they just dispatched a Cup favorite heading into the postseason in 5 games.  And let's not forget, the Caps still have to do more to shed that "choker" label for good, namely winning about 8 more games.

But I am encouraged by the way this team has responded to adversity this postseason.  Down 2-0 to the Jackets after two home losses?  Win four in a row.  Lose a Game 1 to Pittsburgh at home that you absolutely dominated, save for five minutes? Win four of the next five.  I don't think the Caps are going to roll over.  But I'd take Tampa in 6.

I would say 6 games. Any team that loses in game 6 or 7 of the Cup Finals should be safe from being labeled "chokers," in any year.

Also, it all depends on the year. Vegas can be swept in the Conference final, and no one will be accusing them of choking. Washington didn't come into this playoffs with the kind of hype or expectation they did the last 2 years. I would say that most people will stop calling them chokers if they lose to TB in 6 or 7, with their heads held high. That is to say, as long as they show up and are just outplayed by a deeper team.

I think the majority expected whoever won the TB/BOS series to go to the final, much like the WPG/NSH, in the West.

Yeah I'd say choking is when you lose to a team you could/should beat, which has been pretty much every Capitals playoff exit in this era. If you're outmatched and lose that's very different. The Capitals kind of remind me of the Sharks of a couple years ago. Better Sharks teams than that for years were tripped up in the playoffs by teams they should've beaten, then it all comes together and they go on a run to the final, but lose to a team that was a matchup nightmare for them. Since then, though, I haven't heard the same chokers label aimed at the Sharks as it was up to and after blowing the 3-0 lead to the Kings.

If Washington gets to the Cup Finals; and loses 4-2 to Vegas (let's face it; it's probably going to be Vegas vs. TB/WAS), then I wouldn't call them 'chokers' anymore; but they need to at least get back to the ECF in 2019 I think to attempt to fully shed the choker label.
