Surprised the Raptors didn’t make another run with their existing roster in the LeBron-less east. If Kawhi thought San Antonio was obscure and hurt his marketing potential, whew, this sucks for him. Can’t imagine he stays. Toronto didn’t give up too much when compared to the king’s ransom the Spurs supposedly wanted from LAL. The pick they traded being in the next draft and protected is smart. Really, the Spurs didn’t get much at all. Wasn’t Boston’s offer supposedly very good?

Honesty, the real winner of this could easily be the Lakers. They didn’t give up anything, no one expects anything of them next year, and Leonard went to a team he will almost certainly want to leave soon. Of course, that’s what conventional wisdom was about Paul George last offseason.

Can/will Leonard just refuse to play in Toronto? Or claim he's still injured?

I don't think that'll happen.  He'd be putting a lot of money at stake.  I think he'll ride it out until he can leave.

At the same time, Kawhi is getting some very bad advice from a family member who seems to be in way over his head. Who the hell knows what Kawhi is going to do.

I don't get the trade. On paper, it looks like a home run for Toronto. They didn't give up nearly what the ask was from LA. DeRozan is good but he clearly maxed out his potential for what he could do with the team. They'll miss his scoring, but Kawhi is an MVP-level player. Plus the Raptors are getting Danny Green in the deal (apparently?), so that's good for them.

I don't think this pushes Toronto over Boston, but it may. Toronto has a great roster that just got better and they didn't lose Van Vleet or OG.

Assuming Kawhi shows up and his head is on straight, Toronto will be very happy. Too bad there's no guarantee of any of that.

Good luck San Antonio. They'll have a nice team, but they'll get fighting for an 8 seed all season long.

I think Boston has too many good players for Toronto to jump them, but with LeBron out the race to get swept by the Warriors is looking more intersting

The Timberwolves will probably step aside for them.

For 2018/19 it's a good deal for TOR if Kawhi decides he actually wants to give a rat's ass.

If he plays not to get injured and worms his way out of there to play with Lebron in LA, which is what will happen, everybody looks stupid.  TOR looks stupid because DeRozan was a Raptor-for-life and they verbally promised not to deal him, burning that bridge.  This months after firing the coach of the year.

The prize acquisition will give them 40% effort and abandon them, only to end up losing to the Warriors in the 2019/2020 WCF.

Do they attempt to trade him to an LA team at the deadline for assets? Or would the Lakers/Clippers not bother because they'd have a solid shot at him in FA anyways?

If any team didn't learn the lessons of Carmelo's trade to the Knicks, it probably would be the Lakers. Though if the Raptors are trading Kawhi mid-season, it's because it's been a total disaster and LA could then probably pick him up for peanuts.

Kawhi and his keepers threw a hissy fit to try and force themselves to LA and instead they got shipped off to ****ing Canada.

The Lakers didn't want to make any serious trade offers to San Antonio because **** YOU WE'RE THE LAKERS and now year one of their very short window will be spent with LeBron being surrounded by low-upside dirt dog types and Michael Beasley 2.0. And you thought the rest of the 2018 Cavs weren't pulling their weight.

Funny as hell.

Lol, ok. I’m not entirely sure what Toronto is thinking here, but I get it to an extent. Derozan for as good as he is kinda has some issues with assertiveness (I guess that’s how you would put it?) and I think some of that can be hidden in San Antonio. They’re known as a place where system type guys thrive, and I’ve always seen Derozan as a very hi-ceiling system player. Giving him a more defined role I think will help him thrive. I’m surprised Toronto would give up on Derozan for what’s almost certainly a rental, though. That feels like a bit of a slap in the face to Demar.

Kawahi is Kawahi, so I get it from that perspective. But that supporting cast is still not exactly terrifying. Not sure how a disgruntled Kawahi is really gonna fit there.

I don't predict this ending in great things for the Raptors but as a Timberwolves fan, I can tell you that certain teams have to take shots when they can or they'll be in rebuild mode until the end of time.  If I am a Raptors fan, I'm just going to try to enjoy what he brings to the table as long as he does.

It's why I am not interested in the T-Wolves trading Jimmy Butler unless it's for more than I think they'd get.  If everyone in Minnesota is healthy this year, they should be good.  Given the state of the West, their ceiling is probably the second round, but trading Butler for a pick probably means a number of lean years.  So one more fun year is fine by me.  Teams like Toronto and Minnesota are kinda like Indiana football. You're probably never going to win it all so enjoy lesser prizes and hope for some bizarre lightning in a bottle that truly defies the odds.

HOT TAKES

  • This is obviously a gamble the Raptors are making -- and I'm not sure if they would have made it had Paul George resigned with OKC after they gambled last year in trading for him.
  • The Raptors-Kawhi relationship can go one of three ways ...
    • Kawhi plays his heart out and leads the Raptors to the Finals and earns a big contract next summer with the Raptors
    • Kawhi plays his heart out and leads the Raptors to the Finals and earns a big contract next summer only to sign with either the Clippers or Lakers.
    • Kawhi put puts around doesn't hide his displeasure playing in Toronto so they trade after December 15 to one of the LA teams or another team willing to take a half season flier on him.
  • The Spurs are trying to keep their head above water, but my mid-season start the process of a more extensive rebuild with Pop's resignation. Then come summer you'll see them ship off LA, DeMar and others with value. (NOTE: It wouldn't surprise me if Pop resigned before the season began).
  • The Raptors aren't winning the East unless Kawhi buys in and plays how we all know he can play. But, even with an all-in Kawhi it'd be a tough series with Boston.
  • The Spurs aren't making the playoffs in the West unless Minnesota, New Orleans or Portland implodes and Denver doesn't get their :censored: together again.

I mean, the Raptors won 59 games last season. They're really good, and with LeBron heading west, a window opened up for them.

That said, Kyle Lowry is 32, the Celtics, 76ers and even Bucks should continue to improve -- even if Toronto hung on to DeRozan, I'm not sure the 2019/20 season and beyond would actually have offered them a good chance to genuinely contend.

If everything works out for Toronto (e.g. Kawhi is healthy, still one of the top 5-10 players in the league, and actually wants to be there), they'll be the favorites to get out of the East. Do I think they'd beat Golden State or Houston in the Finals? No, but I think they've improved their chances of doing so from "snowball's chance in hell" to "snowball's chance in Hell, Michigan in April."

It's worth the risk. The Raptors have played a lot of really good basketball for a few years. This might be a one-year gamble on everything, but they were never going to have a better chance than this year anyway.

Danny Green is entirely a mixed bag.  While he was 2nd team All Defense in 2016-17, his shooting percentage (both 3pt and total) has fallen sharply for four of the last five seasons. He even had LASIK two years ago, and it hasn't helped.

TOR is also going to this season with a rookie NBA coach, who in the G-League had his squad take 27 3pt shots/game.

We might have our answer, not even a day after the trade:

If he sits out he doesn't accrue a year of service, correct? That would just delay his free agency until 2020.

At a certain point he needs to play basketball. I'm not sure what he thinks the NBA is actually all about.
