The current regular red and gold  set is okay, but there was nothing wrong with the set that Montana and Steve Young wore for most of their careers....That set with slight modifications lasted over 30 years.

That's pretty much what the current set is, the older uniform updated for a modern jersey template.

They never should have changed in 96. I hated the 98-08 uniforms and was glad when they switched back in 09.

However, seeing the old logo and the Quentin font back really has me the happiest I've been in a long, long time.

It has to replace the black ones, right? A team can't have four jerseys in their rotation, right?

Broncos, Jaguars, Texans, Dolphins, Ravens, Bengals, Browns, Falcons, and Seahawks have/had four jerseys

Add these teams, too:

Atlanta (red, white, black throwback, red fauxback CR)

Jacksonville (teal, white, black, mustard CR)

Baltimore (purple, white, black, CR purple w/ gold numbers)

Cleveland (brown, white, orange, brown/orange CR, never wore it, though)

Cincy (black, white, orange, white/black CR)

Houston (blue, white, red, blue w/ red numbers CR)

Arizona (red, white, black, black w/ red numbers CR, not sure if they wore theirs)

LA Chargers (navy, white, powder, royal CR)

I’m really not sure why everyone is assuming the black set is gone. Clearly a team can have four sets with Color Rush. For the 49ers, they even had the black pre-Color Rush, they just grandfathered it in as their CR set. There’s no reason preventing them from simply designating it back to their normal alternate like it used to be and using the 1994 throwback only for CR.

Some of those were the mandated Color Rush unis. But if we took CR out of it, did any team have four in rotation?

You’re kind of shifting the goal posts, as excluding CR unis was not part of the original question. This new 49ers uni is a Color Rush uni.

Is this the first throwback of a throwback?

Definitely not, but not sure who exactly would get credit for it. The blue unis the Packers have worn recently have technically been a throwback to 94 as they wore the yellow lids then and are forced to now. The cowboys went double star in the early 00s which being the blue base would be a throwback to 95 r 96.
