The_Admiral
Minor-league hockey teams shouldn't even be allowed to use Storm after Toledo. They couldn't license the Mallards stuff? Way to replace one of the best minor-league identities with one that will be among the worst. This sucks. Quad Cities belong in the AHL, too. ♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫
Sodboy13
Well, here's a team that's either going to last one season, or is going to wise up fast and have a couple "Mallards Nights" this season before making the switch next year. My money is on the former. Going from @GFB's work to this crapped-out Paint monstrosity really lets the market know how far it's tumbled down the ol' hockey ladder. conesbeans
The eyes are 100% "borrowed" (some would say "stolen") from the logo for Minor League Baseball's Trenton Thunder.
Dilbert
Im hoping thats just a placeholder. Too bad they couldnt keep the Mallards name. The believe the ECHL holds the rights to it and it was probably too expensive. Signature intentionally left blank
officeglenn
I thought this might be a concept that was getting passed around as the genuine article. Thaumatrope
No question the entire brand is a train wreck, but what really kills me is there's the faintest glimmer of a great design buried in all the garbage. Take a look at the Quad City wordmark (or what passes for one). At first glance it's just a generic collegiate block font that they clumsily embellished with a couple lightning bolts...but take a closer look at the Q. It's still a hot mess, but I think using a lightning bolt for the tail of the Q is actually quite clever. I can even see an identity based around some kind of thunder cloud Q...with enough finesse you could even incorporate a C into the same overall shape and end up with a really solid primary logo. This is the kind of stuff that breaks my heart. Whether intentionally or not the designer stumbles onto an interesting solution for the design, but rather than pursue the idea they chug along with the most straight forward (and boring) interpretation of the brand. The end result is something that appears to have escaped from the UHL circa 1995.

CubsFanBudMan
ECHL claims that the Mallards identity and name are theirs. Sad to see GFB's look go. Also, a quick search of "Storm logo" on Google brings this up, too: Swindon Storm ... American football in England?
tigers
That's got to be a joke, why would you downgrade that far? Logano wins BOWL before Chargers.
Sykotyk
If the average fan can't draw it, it's a bad logo. That faux static of the letter just has to go. Also, the lightning bolt on the Y, why not just send the lightning bolt up the entire right side of the Y? At least with the Q it looks purposeful. The Y having a lightning bolt just looks tacky. Maybe that original cyclone/tornado logo is public domain somewhere. Since now two others are shown to use it.

GFB
I just want to take a moment and thank everyone who has mentioned the Mallards’ designs in a positive light. It was always my dream to design a logo for a hockey team and I’m so thankful I received that opportunity not only once, but a handful of times. I’m obviously sad to see it go away, but it was a good run and I wouldn’t change a thing... well, maybe I’d try to get it right on the first try... but to see that it will be remembered fondly by a lot of people is the best feeling an artist can ask for. Thank you. I don’t think I need to comment on the Storm logo for obvious reasons (I don’t want to come across as bitter; it’s a normal part of this industry), but I wish the Storm would have given another young designer the opportunity to cut his teeth in the industry, make some mistakes, and learn the trade with their small budget instead of repurposing existing logos into a “visual identity.”
