Gothamite 17,833 Posted July 15, 2018 Interesting results so far. Brown with gold seems to be the favorite, although the results are all over the board. Quote After observing 10 groups over two nights, the only thing definitively determined was orange is out. Brown and yellow was the favorite with blue and white close behind. Neither had a majority. Brown and yellow also was the least disliked. And the people that favored brown and yellow did so to a greater degree than those who preferred any other combination. “People who do like brown are far more passionate than the people who like blue,” Fowler said Friday. That is significant to the team, as is the fact brown and yellow were less displeasing to those who did not like it. http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sports/padres/sd-sp-padres-brown-uniform-change-blue-0714-story.html
tubby34 228 Posted July 15, 2018 Jesus, They really destroyed their brand. Blow it up, pick whatever colors you want and roll with that lol.
kroywen 2,241 Posted July 15, 2018 And to think that the Kansas City Royals have existed just as long, and have an unmistakable brand that seems almost as traditional as that of older teams. The brown and gold is unique and obviously beloved among fans. Long past due for the organization to similarly embrace it as well.
Bucfan56 8,842 Posted July 15, 2018 Lol, their “focus group” is just going to tell people that the “fans” chose navy and white and they’re going to be stuck looking boring and forgettable, along with being awful on the field, forever. I think a better move move would be to just contract the Padres.
jmac11281 1,998 Posted July 15, 2018 How many surveys and focus groups do the Padres organization need in order to understand that most fans want the brown?

Well, the Royals did do their best to destroy that. Fortunately the BFBS fad passed.
the admiral 21,013 Posted July 15, 2018 Here's hoping the Padres can settle on a uniform that focus groups agree is "mostly the least displeasing."
jus2damcrazey219 306 Posted July 15, 2018 Quote Stop trying to find a way to FIT-OUT and just FIT-IN. Be apart of something special! Just my thoughts - Lebron James This is what I would tell the Padres people: Do the reverse. There is only one way to fit-out or stand out #brownandyellow

It's still going strong everywhere else, unfortunately. Especially the NBA and college sports.
MCM0313 2,092 Posted July 15, 2018 The Padres have never worn brown and gold, so not sure why the fans seem to pre- OH, you mean Brown and yellow! Seriously, though, I'm a little bummed orange is out. My unpopular opinion: whether they go with brown (as they should) or with blue, orange looks better as a secondary color than yellow does.

Orange is too close in value to brown, and is therefore less distinguishable at distance. Yellow “pops” more, to borrow a well-worn phrase.
SilverBullet1929 2,935 Posted July 15, 2018 They've done this focus group research stuff so many times its already insulting. With that said, I've always said the one thing the Padres have done more wrong than changing their colors so much is the fact that they can't stick to anything. Show some backbone and some commitment and some pride and some conviction with whatever color scheme they choose is the key. If they decide to be navy and white then be navy and white for 20 years and watch how people get off their case a bit. To me the constant focus groups and cycling through uniforms lets everyone know the Padres aren't committed to their uniform choices and gives everyone even more ammunition to ridicule them. Excellent example/comparison: I don't think the Phillies are currently wearing their best or most popular uniforms ever BUT the fact they've worn them for 25 years with minimal changes strengthens their look and how it's perceived by the public. That Phillies look IS the Phillies for an entire generation of baseball and sports fans. In that same timespan the Padres have had, what, 6 or 7 uniform overhauls? There is no definitive Padres look for the last 25 years. That's a problem. If the Padres go to brown and yellow in 2020 watch how many people say things like "Yeah cool but they'll go back to navy in 2023 anyways so who cares?"
CaliforniaGlowin 1,002 Posted July 15, 2018 Now they could go with brown and metallic gold. That will really be different!

I always thought the old-school Cleveland Browns had a great color scheme and balance. I think the brown-and-orange Padres looked good too, if a bit generic. The late-'90s Padres, with their navy and orange, also looked great. Heck, they even looked good with brown-yellow-orange all together. For whatever reason, I've never thought that highly of the Pads' brown-yellow look though. Or Wyoming's, which tends to overuse yellow and underuse brown. Has anyone considered just brown and white? The Padres seem to like plain looks, and wouldn't it be more historically accurate regarding the old Catholic friars? The simple scheme has always worked well for Saint Bonaventure's.

I think a color like brown needs to be paired with a bright, vibrant color. Gold is about the best. Bright enough to set apart from the brown, but still rich and bold. Although yellow would look almost as good as this does.

Sec19Row53 1,858 Posted July 15, 2018 It seems like they are trying to end up navy by pairing pinstripes with the brown. Maybe they need a uniform without pinstripes that is brown for the focus group to "pop"
Buc 1,572 Posted July 15, 2018 How about straight-up cardinal and (athletic) gold?? Not a single MLB team uses that colorway now, and if I remember correctly the PCL Padres used to use it. They could even utilize brown as a tertiary trim. Cardinal/gold/brown would definitely be distinctive. https://imgur.com/gallery/J67C03Q This is the San Diego civic flag, for reference. And a long time ago I took a stab at a possible rebrand using those colors...I don't think I ever posted the cardinal-primary version, however.
OnWis97 3,773 Posted July 15, 2018 I’m not the least bit surprised that orange is out. I thought orange and brown was hands down their best look. It worked particularly well on the gray jersey. Maybe they have figured out that “forgettable” isn’t the way to go. Or maybe they are just trying to validate their head-scratching commitment to blandness.
