winters in buffalo

I'm having a bitch of a time figuring this out. Making end zone art for my PFA team, I've run into a roadblock.

I have a wordmark that consists of 3 identical outlines laid on top of each other (1), with each having a thicker stroke than the one on top. It looks fine at 100% opacity (2), but when I try to reduce the opacity, the sides get 'trimmed'

Depending on which order I make the changes in, a different part gets trimmed. I tried to create outlines, then make it transparent(3) and just making the text transparent (4). Neither works.

Any ideas?
