College athletics identity changes

I feel like they can use both of those logos, depending on application.  Primary/secondary and whatnot.

The cuts in the second text version are horrible.

The one in the trees is good. If you go to the nearby Big Basin Redwood State Park, you'll find banana slugs everywhere. On the ground, trees, eating leaves, etc. So a logo making some kind of reference to that is a good one.

Shoot...why not use 'em both??

Only because this is a college we're talking about, and many colleges like to promote their name/initials, it'd make sense to me to go with option 1 as the primary and option 2 as the secondary.  Pair that with font 2--but close up those horizontal bars.  As rendered, that looks like something more for Star Trek than for Slugs.

Speaking of slugs...kudos on whoever came up with these for finding a way to render a doggone slug in a distinctive, attractive and half-formidable way. This might become one of my new favorites.

NM State Adds to Visual Branding Package, Unveils New Secondary Logo

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - NM State athletics added to its branding package Thursday morning by unveiling a new secondary logo. The logo, a stylized version of New Mexico State, is a vintage logo that first made its appearance with the NM State Basketball Team in the late 1970s.

"As we looked to strengthen our identity as the State school in New Mexico, we found inspiration in our archives for a word mark that encompasses the message we wanted to put forward: We are New Mexico State," commented director of athletics Mario Moccia

Introduced as a retro design for the 2019-20 season, the logo took little time to become popular with Aggie fans around the nation. Thus, NM State athletics chose to adopt the mark in order to strengthen the brand image of New Mexico State University and to further the unique identity of NM State athletics around the state and nation. The new wordmark will not replace Pistol Pete as the Aggies' primary mark.

Just a can-o-worms observation, but "Ladyjacks" sounds really dumb in 2020.

Figure it out.

Yeah I’ve wondered how much longer these names will last. For example why does there need to be the Baylor “lady bears” basketball team. They have had much more success than the male team.

Excellent!

Lumberjacks can be men or women. Bears can be male or female. Volunteers are a neutrally-gendered group.

The only time it makes even a little sense is when you have a gendered-nickname like Cowboys or Minutemen; but even then, you might as well just roll with that across the board.

Nobody at the University of Delaware is throwing a fit about the mens teams being called the Blue Hens and not the Blue Cocks.
