Forgotten Rivalries

Magic-Bulls was very fierce back in the Shaq/Penny days, I think.

Eh, not really. It had the makings of a rivalry early on with Horace Grant signing with the Magic and their back-to-back playoff meetings, but it fizzled before it really amounted to anything. It ended in a dud with Grant missing most of the '96 ECF and the Magic getting swept, followed by Shaq leaving for LA and Penny's lingering knee issues. If that '96 series were competitive, and if the Shaq/Penny situations had gone more in Orlando's favor, then I can see it being more memorable.

I remember Jazz/Blazers being pretty heated when I was a kid. In fact, my Stepdad still hates the Blazers. But me personally, I don’t mind them all that much now and don’t know of that many other Jazz fans my age that genuinely hate Portland like we do the Lakers or something. Must be an older generation thing. Plus, I think Lillard being on the Blazers - a guy a lot of Utahans including myself still love and still gets lots of applause here - has made the Blazers more likeable to a lot of us. That’s just my perception.

I'm trying to figure out the last great rivalry the NBA had. People cite Lakers/Celtic often and that's rightfully so. I guess Warriors-Cavs, but only one of those series was truly entertaining to watch (2016). The 2015 Finals were interesting to watch in the sense that you had a gassed Lebron dragging a fractured super team to the Finals and taking a 2-1 lead against an overconfident Warriors team, but you knew it wasn't going to last and that the Warriors would eventually get it together. Other than that, the rivalry has been pretty one-sided, especially the last 2 years with the Warriors going a combined 8-1.

It's probably Spurs/Lakers from 1999-2004 then.

Heat/Knicks was a lot of fun in the late 90s until it petered out due to Dolan.

Another fun rivalry that was crushed due to owner mismanagement was 49ers/Seahawks. They had a good run there from about 2011 to 2014 or so.

Do today's kiddies know that the Yankees and Royals once had a fierce rivalry? This was in the late 1970s and early 1980s. When I was growing up, George Brett was the opposing player whom I feared most.

In the mid-to-late 1980s, the Cardinals were the Mets' biggest rivals.

I still have a primal hatred for the entire NFC North because of the Bucs previous time in the defunct NFC Central, and the fact that they used to regularly get their :censored: kicked in by all four of those teams. Even the Lions.

Right there with you, but Bucs-Packers was something special.  That 1997 season when you had Battle of the Bays Parts I and II in the regular season and then round 3 in the divisional round.

Then there was always this rivalry...

Let’s not forget Pacers/Knicks ft. Reggie Miller vs. Spike Lee. Loved watching that 30 for 30 about it too.

That (legal) hit he laid on Chad Clifton that nearly ended his life still has me feeling warm and fuzzy, and that was like 15 years ago!

Bulls-Knicks was a good rivalry.

I don't think many people remember it because the pre-Decision Heat and pre-Rose Bulls have been somewhat forgotten, but the Bulls and Heat had a rivalry in the mid 2000s that was about as chippy as the NBA gets short of an all-out brawl. That James Posey sure was up to no good.

Good call on Blackhawks-North Stars upthread. From what I understand, they occupied a place similar to what the Perds do now, where the Wings and Leafs commanded begrudging respect to go with their hatred while this team just elicited the purest irritation. James Neal certainly felt like my Dino Ciccarelli.

The 90s Knicks have to be the last NBA team to have multiple rivalries at one time. There was some overlap between 1991 and 2000, but they had some very memorable beefs with the Bulls, Pacers, and Heat. What's amazing is that they bumped into at least one of these teams each postseason during that 9-year span.

I remember those days.  The Titans were definitely bigger rivals to the Ravens than the Steelers at the time.

Part of the rivalry too was that the rest of the league tended to treat them as interlopers rather than rivals after both teams moved from their original cities. As the Browns and Oilers they had a few big games between each other but neither really looked at the other as their biggest rival. It was the Steelers for both of them.

In the 1980s, North Stars / Black Hawks was a pretty intense rivalry.  "Secord Sucks."

49ers-Giants. Some great regular season battles but since 1981 they've met 8 times in the playoffs including 2 NFC Championship Games both won by the Giants at The Stick.

The second largest playoff comeback in NFL history took place between the Giants and Niners in the first round in 03. Still the loudest game I’ve ever been to and the only reason I’ll ever remember long-snapper Trey Junkin’s name.

Many brawls occurred between those two, I wasn't alive for the rivalry, but I've seen countless videos and heard many stories from locals who absolutely hated the Hawks.

I would also like to mention the old rivalry between the Wild and Canucks from the 2000s. I think this began in the 2003 playoffs when the Wild knocked out Vancouver who was heavily favored in the series. Bertuzzi made comments about the series not needing to go back to Vancouver because they'd finish us off in Minnesota which fueled Wild fans hatred. Anyways, I just remember being a young kid and hating the Canucks, I'm willing to bet that if you were to ask any Wild fans who they hated the most at the time, most would say Vancouver. Since the divisional realignment this rivalry has died down and is mostly forgotten even among Wild fans who now are more focused on Chicago and Colorado.

University of Cincinnati had great rivalries with Pittsburgh in the Big East days and with Louisville during the CUSA and Big East days. Once both schools bolted for the ACC, both rivalries were killed.

I feel like the Reds-Cardinals rivalry has died down a bit.  Cubs rivalry is still pretty good.

FC Cincinnati this season gained a new rivalry with Indy Eleven but with FCCs move to MLS next year this rivalry only lasted this year. FCC swept the season series with 3 wins. The rivalry with Louisville will also be missed. Over the past three seasons Lou City and FCC each won 4 times and drew 2 times. We even had an Open Cup game. The traveling fan base would be big for all the games. We still have one more shot at playing Indy and Louisville in the playoffs. Once FCC enters MLS I expect big rivalries with Red Bulls, Fire, and if they still exist Crew.

I miss the Bengals rivalries with Tennessee and Jacksonville. The Bengals and Lions used to play every preseason but now the Bengals play the Colts every preseason. I miss the Lions rivalry.

The other game I remember from the rivalry (but couldn't find on video) was the game in Tennessee during the 2001 regular season.  The Ravens won 16-10 following a goal line stand made after being saved by a penalty on the Ravens.  The apparent winning touchdown was wiped out because Peter Boulware touched an offensive lineman while scrambling to get onside before the last play.  The play was blown dead for encroachment, then the Ravens stopped Steve McNair on an QB sneak with :03 left.

Shouldn’t the Titans have been able to decline the penalty and thus the winning touchdown count?

we see so many times “touchdown, flag, defensive penalty, penalt declined, touchdown stands”

Do they have one with Red Bulls already? I feel like that would be one sided hate. The Columbus - Cincy feud could be legendary if it's allowed to take place. I see it as closer to Seattle vs Portland than LAFC vs LA Galaxy since there's already some shared history in the US Open Cup.
