Miami Marlins 2019 Rebrand

I really wish the piping on the sleeves was thicker, or was higher up on the sleeve like it is on the last set. That way the colors pop way more. That pretty much solves any issues I have with the set. Other than the blue being for BP which is a bummer.

Im hoping that piping issue is something they tweak moving forward. Seems like teams have freedom to make small alterations like that.

It just needs some adjustments on the outlines, just like the Dolphins did with their orange. Make the outlines and drop shadow on the script thicker and more visible. Make the outline on the cap logo thicker. Change the Caliente Red to Salmon. Make those adjustments, and it'll make a world of difference.

So far I would say that the initial reactions I've seen from Marlins fans on social media about the rebrand are similar to the level of enthusiasm when they unveiled the 2012 set. My recollection is that many people were totally on board in the beginning but their opinions soured gradually over time. That last unveiling was much more warmly received than I would have expected.

Yeah, we talked about that a while back.  It’ll be interesting how they interpret that rule once they’re used in a game.   I don’t see any issue with the black jerseys, but I could definitely see a better catching a glimpse of the sleeve patch on that white jersey and getting confused for a split-second.

It seems as if they are avoiding the "Marlins" name and are concentrating on "Miami" more.  Personally, I would've liked to have seen "Marlins" on the home jersey and "Miami" on the road jersey. The outline embroidery of the "M" on the hat needs to be raised. It's too flat I think.  Just my two cents worth.

Video of the road uniforms in action. It’s an afternoon game so light isn’t that bright, but with the black socks and black cap these just look really dull from a distance (better up close). Also the blue looks green to me when the sun hits it. Reminds me a lot of the Diamondbacks’ turquoise trimmed road uniform.

I love that they rolled out the new uniforms the next day for a championship game, like it’s a Mighty Ducks movie or something. 😂

The gray uniforms are absolutely lifeless. The first time I saw them scrolling through this topic and scrolled from the whites to the grays I actually thought my screen dimmed, then I had to refocus my eyes. Even the baseball logo on the sleeve was grey.

And this red is crazy-  it really does feel like a different color throughout its applications in the jerseys and logos.

Any color besides black would have been nice for the script.  I was a big fan of the white lettering on the previous set.  I thought it was unique, and added life to what could have been a drab set.  I think the same could have worked here.  If not white, then any of their other colors would be better than black.  It's just toooooooo black.

The rule doesn't seem to be very strict anymore.  They originally deemed the Phillies swirl-P to be baseball like, so they switched to an open P for a while, then the swirl-P was all of a sudden OK.

Off topic - while looking for good pics of Giant's jerseys, I stumbled upon one from the Will Clark era (what I grew up seeing on baseball cards.)  I never realized just how bad it is compared to literally every other jersey they've had (of course, if this is your worst look, then you aren't doing that bad.)

That entire set is awful. From the puffy SF, to the Yankees like road set, it all looks like a knockoff of the Giants. Once they switched to the current font, things got a bit better. It wouldn’t be until they moved into PBP in 2000 that they would finally clean it up completely, though.

The worst Giants set was when they brought back the cursive New York Giants script and wore black and orange pullovers: 1977-1982, according to Dtt9s. At least it was short. But I agree that that Giants script above was worse than the one before/after it and the 2000-present radial-arched variation, yes. The set had some wonky Compacta/Haettenschweiler numbers, too; I think the 7 in particular was weird.

1.  I like the SF road uniform.

2.  I never even noticed the change from vertical to radial in 2000.  I agree, subtle but big improvement.

3.  The templates from 95-00 on DTT9 really suck.  The stitching lines are so dark it really detracts from the actual designs, and it makes it hard to visualize piping and other trim.  I'm not a big fan of the current template - especially since it doesn't show sock color, and they've eliminated alternates - but it's better than that horrible one.

EDIT:  here's the current template, showing when the Giants adopted the placket piping.  Is it really that noticeable?  There's absolutely no reason to exaggerate the stitching on a baseball template.  It's immaterial to the design. Show (lightly) the actual part where the jersey separates, along with the buttons (since those do play a part of the design since letters have to either be cut or moved to fit in there) but the rest of the placket doesn't matter unless there's trim there.

I don’t mind the ‘77-‘82 set too much. I’ve always liked that script and the orange-billed cap. The problem was being too colorful with the orange and black jerseys.

Yes, orange sanitaries and white cleats. Ugh. At least the first version had a half-decent attempt to match home and road wordmarks.

The 1983-93 set, due to how much the font deviated from the team’s history and the awful number font (which stuck around until 1999), is always the worst for me.

The font is especially nasty when seen in this context:

There’s probably a similar “San Jose” (sin acento, porque gringos) or “Santa Clara” prototype collecting dust somewhere after the stadium referendum (thankfully) bombed. The ‘94-‘99 set was an upgrade, while the 2000-2011 uniforms were the best the team has ever had.

I disagree. The Giants current orange alt is inspired by that set and I think it looks really good. There’s room for that script in the Giants set. It also at least has a tie to some history. The set that BBtV posted, though? Looks really bad, and has zero historical context.

I will agree that the black version of that jersey was mostly really bad, though. The orange jersey was much better.

Are we talking about this?  If so, this is one of my favorite looks in the whole league, and one of my favorite scripts of all time.  Even as a kid, while it predates me, I'd see it on old baseball cards and was in love with it.  It's absolutely perfect for its era, and translates very well today.  I really love that style of number, and how well it contrasts with the script, which only serves to emphasize it more.  I wish more teams realized that they don't need numbers that match their lettering.

Back on topic:  The Marlins got new uniforms.  lol OK.

It is perfect for its era, which has passed, and the Giants have moved since then. I wish that style had stayed as a specifically New York property while the other style is more universal.

His plan now is for this to be the longterm definitive identity

lol ok

Sorry, but too much of this identity reminds me of the Blue Jays’ “Black Jays” look, only with less legible scripts and logos. Nothing about this strikes me as a long-term identity.

I think this identity has some room to grow without a full rebrand. I second the calls for a cap with a blue bill or a blue crown (my personal choice), and when you look at 2018 the Marlins gave a blue cap a test run with the player weekend uniforms. I think overtime the blue and red can be let out more on the script and give the uniforms more of a neon light appearance. I wonder if the team went conservative at the beginning to gauge reaction with the room to make tweaks later.

On a another note, good-bye Marlins 2012-18 road gray uniforms. You were under appreciated and perhaps underrated. The white Miami script was unique to MLB at the time and a great look.
