Miami Marlins 2019 Rebrand

If the right person in the Marlins organization is notified of this they could probably make a serious case over this with Majestic because isn't there a point where this isn't ok in terms of proper representation and marketing of the team and their logos? Like, for example the style guide... isn't that made so that licensed manufacturers are forced to use the proper logos to not misrepresent the teams? In that case the Marlins could say that Majestic isn't sticking to the style guide and I'm sure that violates something.

I mean, that seems drastic to create a case over it, but I guess these days you never know.  Majestic would certainly be on the hook for replacing all incorrect inventory.....they'd probably be responsible for some sort of store credit for people that got the incorrect ones....but I can't see them just sending out new shirts to everyone that bought them.  I think they'd only really do something (for those that received them) if someone complained, and otherwise the other people just keep what they got.

I've been meaning to email them again to complain, but I just haven't gotten around to it with the holidays.  I'm not going to bother sending the second one back - I gave it to my brother for Christmas, who didn't care about the (relatively) small error.  I do wonder how they reacted when they received my first returned shirt - did they figure it out or not?

I mentioned it to a guy in the team store, and he was like "oh yeah, look they all have that" once he looked at them, but he's not going to have any power to do anything, and I doubt he cared enough to mention it to superiors.

The interesting thing too is that even the graphic/image in the online store shows the error, which I didn't notice when I ordered it:

So clearly it's been an issue from the get-go in pre-production (with photoshoots for product displays, online, etc) that either nobody caught, or someone decided "f*** it, print them, hopefully nobody notices."  That happens more than you think if deadlines are approaching.

They can demand all the want.  Short of walking away from the team, they're under contract and the Marlins could just keep them if they wanted.

Anyway, back to the uniforms.

Majestic is misprinting logos on their shirts (notice the missing red drop shadow on the second i:

I ordered one and sent it back as it was wrong.  The second one came the same way.  And I went into the team store, all of this particular shirt are like that too.

Man, first thing I noticed was how the tail intersects with the "a". Looks kinda messy.

I didn't even notice the red dropshadow until you pointed it out.

The shirt also has the tail going through the middle of the a which the logo posted doesn't have.

oh wow, I didn't even notice the extra line inside the a there.  Good catch.

Obviously they got a wrong file or someone deleted parts of it accidentally or something.

Which is exactly what happened to the Brewers’ logo in the early 1990s when MLB Properties created their digital files, and it took a quarter-century to correct.

I understand the authenticity angle for a true throwback piece, but the transparent webbing definitely looks better on a blue background. Using white makes it an unintended focal point when it’s genuinely the least important part of the logo after the ball and the letters. If they ever use this logo full time with a contemporary uniform, I think the best solution would actually be to make the webbing blue on all background colors. The webbing should be the same color as the glove leather, not the ball leather. Wouldn’t a white webbing even be illegal for a pitcher to wear? 🙂

Ah, that’s the old “there are no blue bears in Chicago” reasoning. 😛

Blue webbing ruins the design; only the letters are blue, which is necessary for it to read properly.

If not white, then gold.  But the white is a nice balance to separate webbing from the outline.   And this isn’t familiarity or nostalgia speaking; I’m capable of separating design from emotion (my Packers have an absolutely terrible logo, don’t @ me).

Oh absolutely. This is priority number one. But getting rid of some of the obvious hokeyness along the way sure would be nice.

I disagree. The hokeyness neither adds nor subtracts from anything. It's just window dressing. Winning is ultimately what matters to the perception of your average MLB player.

The thing is a lot of fans like the hokeyness, so ditching that isn't necessarily smart. I'm with @Bucfan56 on this one. Sometimes you gotta be you, and not everyone can be the New York Yankees.

Gold would be better than white.  I think white is the worst option, with gold or transparent being better.  That post had the opposite effect on me - now when I see the old version with the white webbing, it sticks out like a sore thumb and makes me not like the logo as much.  I'm torn about it on the blue background.  I don't see it as "webbing", just a space.  Therefore the blue in there doesn't do it for me.  Still better than white though - that doesn't make any sense at all.

The fawning over Jeter is ridiculous. He's not even the majority owner.

However, he is the spokesperson. Part of his job is to take the hits while the money men behind him remain unaffected.

There's a difference between hokeyness and being a joke. The Marlins, save for a few spots in their history (i.e., the two World Series titles), have been a joke. It's better to sacrifice hokeyness if it means getting your crap together as an organization.

That's not really what I was getting at. People are acting like Jeter's the one making moves and comparing him to the previous ownership group. And neither is true.

Yes, he's the frontman, but we all know that. So we shouldn't be indulging in the act if we're trying to be accurate.

I think BBTV's more or less right. The best way to do that is to win. The hokeyness isn't going to matter if you're winning. And the new straight-laced attitude won't mean anything if you're losing.

Apples and oranges. Now, if the blue bear also included some unnatural focal element that made you say, “is that a mistake?” Then I’d agree it’s the same level of reasoning. 🙂

Kidding aside, it’s an eye-opening take. I’d actually argue that you’re not even intended to “read” the letters. Rather, you “read” the ball and glove and “discover” the letters. The blue webbing helps you read the image by unifying the entire glove into a single unit, thus improving the hierarchy of the design (“It’s a ball in a glove,” followed by, “oh, and the glove is made from an M and a B!”). Personally, I don’t think that the design is ruined either way, but if I had to choose one, the white webbing is a much more invasive choice because it puts focus in the only place where there’s nothing to see, whereas the blue webbing only slightly tones down the presence if elements that are intended to be “hidden” in the first place.

Again, there isn't a straight laced attitude. There's a middle ground between straight laced and being a laughingstock and that's all they're aiming for. Just because they're trying to bring a little more respectability to the organization doesn't mean they're trying become straight laced, buttoned up, boring, etc. If anything that's only an assumption because Jeter is a famous Yankee. Now as I type that I wonder if we're actually doing the Yankees a disservice by implying that their seriousness is stuck up and boring.

Jeter is not the majority owner but he's clearly the control person. While I doubt he's the person picking up the phone and calling general managers for trade negotiations, it seems likely that he has final say on trades and dictates overall strategy, providing heavy input. I think he is involved enough on the baseball side of things to hold him accountable if the Marlins don't compete within a reasonable amount of time.

All this talk of hokeyness being bad, yet the Cardinals are THE very definition of a cornball organization and that doesn’t matter one single bit. Reason being? They win.

Be as goofy as you want. As long as you’re season is still competitive past May. That’s really all it takes.

How are the Cardinals the definitive cornball organization? I've always heard of them as a respectable franchise for as long as I could remember.
