Angels tell Anaheim they're opting out of their lease on Angel Stadium

I have never been to Angel Stadium, so take a lot of what I’m saying with a grain of salt.

Anyone I’ve ever talked to that has been has never been disappointed, but never blown away either.

Again I’m not getting too detailed with renovation plans, but I would want to keep at least 70% of the ballpark as is.

Aside from the Big A scoreboard, most every other change I would want to make wouldn’t be noticeable to an outsider. Deisgn wise the park is fine. I just think you could shift some things around park, such as moving the team store out to the outfield. That would open up more concourse space which the stadium doesn't have a lot of compared to more modern stadiums.

Again, I’ve seen more ambitious projects with more obstacles get done.

Read the whole review. The concourse where the team store is behind home plate isn’t the issue. The issue is with the levels above the main level and the closer you get to the foul poles.

That, and the outfield is already cramped.

The current outfield situation is almost irrelevant because that part of the park would be completely redesigned, likely dropping capacity in the process. The scoreboard alone would necessitate this. Anything that's in the main grandstand that can be moved to the outfield or outside the park, I would move it.

Once I had an idea of how much extra concourse space I have to work with, then I would look into the areas you're referring to and figure out how we can make changes. If stuff is to be moved out of that section of the park to somewhere else, it needs to have a place to go. If that's not enough, then you would likely have to tear down the exterior wall and move the park out more into the parking lot. At that point, you might as well just build a new ballpark IMO.

Basically, I would want to do a simpler version of the Wrigley Field renovations.

My point is that where the team store is currently has no impact on the concourse size.  That area's the widest part of the inner concourse at street level.

Going higher and towards the foul poles are where you have issues and the upper deck's design really doesn't give you any options to fix anything.

The area around the foul poles is going to be narrow no matter what.

The one thing you could do with the upper deck is to take out some seats next to the tunnels, and have those section(s) of the concourse open to the field.

That would allow you to bring the concourse closer towards the field and would give you a little extra room to work with. The Royals did this in two areas of Kauffman in the last renovation.

It’s not as good as a modern design, but it would be better than status quo.

So to recap...

The Mariners are squawking about their corporately whored stadium.

The Diamondbacks want out of their corporately whored stadium.

The Rays want out of their corporately whored stadium, and now

The Angels want out of their stadium that's so old they can't whore it.

So let's move 'em around...

Los Angeles gets the Rays.

Tampa gets the Mariners.

Arizona gets the Angels.

Seattle gets the Diamondbacks.

Just for the lulz.

I would love a Dbacks for Angels swap.  Having the angels play in Phoenix would be awesome!

I remember reading when the D'backs were being established, there was talk of putting them in the AL West so the Angels would be a division rival instead of the Dodgers. Which I guess could have worked fine, but that obviously never happened.

That was part of it.  I also think there was something about MLB having the power to move them under certain conditions in the first years, but that option was allowed to expire.

Off the top of my head, I’m pretty sure there was. I vaguely remember talk of moving the D Backs to the AL west (and Astros back to the NL west) sometime around the turn of the century. I wanna say it had something to do with a potential franchise relocation that never happened?

Or the nixed Twins/Expos contraction?

YES. That was it. I totally forgot about that saga. How close was to actually happening? It felt like it had some real potential at the time, but seemed pretty unthinkable. The Expos at least made some sense, but the Twins? How did they get wrapped up in that whole mess?

The Twins were included because the owner was sick of the Metrodome and couldn't secure public stadium funding.

Q & A from the time.

There was also the recent failure of the Pohlad’s attempt to sell the team to Triad-area investors and move the team to Kernersville, NC. The voters gave the proposal a firm no.

The Pohlads deserve more recognition as horrible owners. They may not have the Griffith-style racism, but they keep up with the cheapness.

Nowadays, if contraction did come up, I’d imagine the focus would be on the Florida teams. Had Marlins Park not been built, a merger or contraction would certainly be discussed.

I’m sure Oakland would be thrown in. Fitting that they have the white elephant origin of their mascot.

This was my first thought. It's not really because the A's aren't a viable organization, either. It's mainly because they've been led by terrible owners since the early to mid 1990s. For all of the talk about their media market issues, it's pretty much their own fault they're in that quandary in the first place. At this point, I'd say they would be a good fit for an area like Portland, but not with the current dopes they have in ownership. That in itself would set them up for failure no matter where they were.

It would suck if Oakland lost all three of their major sports teams.  Oakland will 100% embrace the A's once Mark Davis moves to PF Chang Stadium at Al Davis Field in Las Vegas.

I mean deep down I want the Angels my second favorite team to remain in Southern California.  But if they were forced to leave the region in a bizzare circumstance, why not chase field if the Dbacks are so unhappy and decided to move to San Antonio or Portland LOL
