What's a waste? He's a legit superstar. This is the biggest signing in the Padres history (no hyperbole intended).

And that's great money for him.

Bruce Bochy to retire after the 2019 season.

Thanks for everything, Boch. It’ll be tough to see him go, but it was time. The man has been managing for roughly 25 years and has had a few health problems of late.

I’m happy he gets to go out without a contract dispute.

I know it might be wishful thinking, but I hope the Giants somehow end up with a winning record this season so Boch can end is career with an overall winning record.

The padres will be kicking themselves in 3 years when he declines, and are stuck with 100+ million still being owed to him and no other team wanting to take him.

Oh no, don’t get me wrong, this is a GREAT move (at least financially) for Machado, because I truly don’t think there was another team that would’ve given him even close to that.

For the Padres, though? My god. I already think this team is BY FAR the dumbest franchise in baseball, and this is one of the dumbest moves they’ve ever made. It doesn’t move the needle even an inch in terms of competing on the field. They still have no pitching. And they just committed $30 million a year to a guy who’s already trending in the wrong direction.

This is such a Padres move to make.

Or they'll be hoisting the World Series trophy and quite happy they locked him up and still have 2 more years of their core together in coming seasons.

Trending in the wrong direction? Machado is coming off his best season to date.

If anything this is the first time the Padres didn't make the signing on the wrong side of the trend. And how does putting a franchise player who drops 35+ home runs and bats .300 or so not help them competitively on the field? Particularly when his being in the lineup will do nothing but improve those around him like Hosmer and Myers? Keep in mind the Padres have pitching coming up from the minors in the next season or two.

You are delusional if you think adding Machado actually gives them a shot of even sniffing a WS.

Ok.

But seriously not sure how you don't think his signing, which was one of the final pieces they needed in their budding lineup doesn't  move the needle. I mean they've basically got a complete infield now for the first time in decades. And they've got a glut of outfielders and oncoming pitching talent. Really an established superstar hitter/infielder was the one piece they were missing besides maybe an established ace pitcher.

I was hoping the Pads would get Harper, but oh well.

I keep seeing this sentiment but not sure why. Harper would have been more expensive and wouldn't have filled any holes in the Padres fielding lineup.

I mean I guess I get the Machado can be an :censored: to opposing teams thing, but frankly who cares. His teammates always like him. Harper can't be said the same of.

The Padres arguably have the best farm system in baseball. That's probably how they help solve the pitching problem.

More teams should bring in high-profile stars when they know they've got a crop of young, talented players about to come up to the Major League level. I really like this move for San Diego.

Phillies statement was that the contract went above their valuation (not ability) of him so they walked away.  Still in on Harper, but i guess his number goes to $350M now.

Maybe 325. But it will be more.

That's probably true for this year, but the Padres aren't just thinking about 2019.

I think part of the reason why the D'Backs and Giants are in rebuilding mode is because of how far ahead of them the Padres are in terms of farm depth.

They're already conducting business as if they're going to the playoffs by 2021 as well they should be. Once Tatis gets the call for the big club, their left-side infield is going to be downright filthy. They also have what looks like a perennial 30+ home run hitter in Franmil Reyes on the roster, and he's only 23.

The pitching leaves much to be desired and will likely have to be overhauled for the Padres to be serious contenders. That will be the biggest challenge for them going forward, but I wouldn't be too concerned. You can build a pitching staff almost entirely through free agency and trades, (see your current World Series champions for further info) and selling veteran players on coming to San Diego is one of the simplest tasks you can have as a GM.

If you did a poll asking every Major League player where they would like to play the most based solely on location, my guess is at least 1/3rd of them would list San Diego as their first choice. They will not have issues tacking on veterans to add to their young core of talent.

All that said, ten years is a lot of years to give to any player, no matter how young or good they might be. Best case scenario for Padres, they get a market return on the contract in seven of the ten years. The Machado signing is a massive bet on the future of the club with a decent probability of failure, especially if he continues to be a shell of himself defensively.

For better or worse, this move will likely go a long way in determining the fate of this club for the next five-ten years.

Machado is not going to win San Diego a World Series this year but it's a net positive that a franchise that was looking as moribund as the Padres were gets to have a moment in the sun like this.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫
