FiddySicks
I feel like Willie Mac is kind of the more underrated of the Giants stars (at least in comparison to Willie Mays) but I absolutely cannot state how important he was to the Giants early San Francisco days. He was one of the most lethal hitters of all time. This is a HUGE loss and he will be sorely missed. Yeah, and cheer him despite booing Jayson Werth for leaving as a FA for Washington. tjs11
Joe Mauer retired. Not surprising but Minnesota will miss a home grown hero. Sure, he lapsed in his last 6 years or so and was transitioned to 1st base. But was a legend who played at Cretin Durham and a legend in St. Paul, and now in Minneapolis. I'm a casual baseball fan, but he sure had an impact on the state and was a legend around my friend group who everyone seemingly had a Joe Mauer story (meeting him, mowing his lawn, sitting at a desk where he carved his name, in high school) which only ratifies what kind of an icon he was in the TC. (personally I always thought it was super cool that The Nook [restaurant] in St Paul had a plaque where he hit a HR in HS, on their brick outside-The Nook is across the street from his HS stadium)
Shumway
Baseball award voting's gone crazy. JD Martinez won TWO Silver Slugger awards (one for a position he played less than a third of the season) and Shohei Ohtani won Rookie of the Year, despite spending half the season on the DL. Not complaining about Shohei winning, but, even as an Angels fan, I don't think I'd give him the award based on time missed, even if he did things that have never been done before. FiddySicks
Giving martinez TWO Silver sluggers and shutting out Khris Davis is another example of why these awards shouldn’t be taken seriously by anyone. Also... while technically a rookie in the US, he’s played pro ball before, unlike others up for the award. I hate when players who’ve played pro ball in other leagues around the world come in and can win ROY, when their competition are usually 5-10 years younger than they are

I hate when players who’ve played pro ball in other leagues around the world come in and can win ROY, when their competition are usually 5-10 years younger than they are Technically, any form of organized baseball played beyond college where the athletes get paid is considered professional baseball. Independent leagues? Yes. All levels of the minor league system all the way down to Dominican Summer Leagues? Yes. Where would Nippon rate on the scale? I don't know. It's the second-best "major" professional baseball circuit on the planet, but few Japanese players ever make the jump, and even fewer succeed. Some of them might just be happy playing out their careers in Japan, though usually their best players will at least spend a sizable chunk of their careers in North America. In any case, there's no argument here. Torres nor Andujar have any legitimate claim for the award over Ohtani other than the fact that Ohtani, the position player, didn't actually play in the field. That is, of course, more than cancelled out because he also showed his chops of being a pitcher of outstanding quality when he was healthy to pitch. Besides, Torres and Andujar especially didn't cover themselves in any glory when they played in the field anyway, just trust me on that one because I saw virtually every game those two played. Ohtani was the deserved RotY choice. It would've reeked of big market and "played for a better team" bias to have chosen either of those other two. They were good, obviously, but neither was a better candidate, and they never were.
Crabcake
Looks like Astros assistant GM Mike Elias will be the Orioles’ new GM. After reading a quick quick article about this (I haven’t watched nearly enough baseball over the last two years to know who this is), first impressions are good. He’s a young guy from a successful organization and was in charge of drafting for that organization. I had hoped we’d hire a young, hungry guy from another organization, so it’s pretty good I guess. Any Astros fans here know anything else to add to that?

BBTV
The Phillies don't have a traditional ownership situation - rather a "limited partnership" with silent members and one "managing partner", which IMO has really held them back over the years - but the guy that's been in charge for the past few years is a billionaire that's often said he wants to throw his own money into the team, which may or may not be within the guidelines of the limited partnership that runs the team. "We're going into this expecting to spend money — and maybe even be a little stupid about it," Middleton said. "We just prefer not to be completely stupid." That quote pretty much guarantees that they're not going to sign anyone - it's kinda like Brett Brown's comment at the onset of NBA offseason "we're going star hunting". My guess is that they throw $500M at a middle reliever because he leads the league in some obscure stat that gives Gabe Kapler a boner (that he probably massages with his coconut oil while simultaneously eating and spitting ice cream.) http://www2.philly.com/philly/sports/phillies/phillies-john-middleton-mlb-free-agency-spending-manny-machado-bryce-harper-20181116.html "The views expressed here are mine and do not reflect the official opinion of my employer or the organization through which the Internet was accessed."
