Not MLS news, but USL is getting a new league wide number and letter font. It’s, uh... Interesting. It’s growing on me, though.

^Yeah, I’m not a fan. As I said when the kit was released, the shorts look like they were originally the same light blue color as the shirt and socks, but were put in the wash with dark blue jeans and got stained. They really should’ve just gone with light blue shorts, or even navy blue shorts like what’s shown here on this Adidas model:

(As an aside, note the different jocktag design on the shirt the model is wearing, as well as the lack of the MLS sleeve badges). Several of the images of the new 2019 shirts on Adidas’ website show samples of the jerseys rather than the final versions).

It really depends on what view you are looking at the SKC kit from.  From the front I think the shorts work ok because you get a massing for that darker grayish blue in the shirt.  It makes sense.  From the sides and back, it looks like their lower bodies are either really sweaty or they are wearing just plain old sweat pants (in shorts form).

I still love the shirt, I even think the pattern looks good in action, subtle but noticeable.  Gives the whole Sporting Blue look some nice texture.  But they might have been trying to be too clever by a half step with the shorts even if the idea is understandable.

Then again if they are going to play like this all season, they can wear pink tutus for all I care!  🤤

Remember how everyone was ripping the Revolution white kit when it was released because of how boring it was? It now looks like one of the most creative ones of the league, it would have been much better received if it had been one of the last releases.

I understand all white as first option. My major gripe is that almost all of these kits have no noticeable design elements to speak of. The only one who has a vertical/horizontal/sash stripe in a contrasting color on their clash kit is Chicago. No team with colored sleeves, no team using the Regista template with a yoke, no pinstripes, pretty much everyone is white with maybe some barely noticeable pattern. I’m glad Real Salt Lake wet with that pattern, at least it stands out.

Serie A is also notoriously an uncreative league with teams resorting to white as the standard clash. 15 out of 20 teams have a white shirt. Only 4 of those use the ‘completely white with only minimal color trim and maybe a pattern’ model. If you want to be generous and say the Revs, RBNY and LAFC don’t fit that description  12 MLS teams use that model.

The template thing is huge, I feel. Having every team using Adidas templates, and using the same stock league number typeface, really does the league no favors in terms of sameyness. Even apart from the differences in sport contexts, you look at all of the NBA's white jerseys lined up next to each other and this generic feeling doesn't happen.

That's a placeholder as far as I know. I'm not sure if the new font has been publicly released, but when it is, I'll post better looks at it. The USL Championship branding as a whole is an upgrade from the previous iteration, but the new kit font is going to take some getting used to. It's got a very minimalist, yet sort of retro feel. It reminds me of those metal signs you'd see on an apartment building in the 60's and 70's. I'm not really very good at explaining this stuff, though.

This might explain why we haven't seen many USL kits released yet. The season here in St. Louis starts March 9, and preseason matches begin tomorrow, but there hasn't been a peep about new kits yet.

Well with NBA jerseys the format is very different. The team name and player number take up a lot of space on the front, and on the back the player name too. There's just more open space on football/soccer kits than basketball jerseys. Though I agree there is a lot more variety, I think it's more structurally benefitting basketball than soccer.

So is MLS on a "name your kit" craze now?

*Disclaimer: I am not an authoritative expert on stuff...I just do a lot of reading and research and keep in close connect with a bunch of people who are authoritative experts on stuff. 😁

Yup. I'm guessing it got people's attention when Nike did it so they're doing it too. Since everyone is wearing white they need the names to differentiate each kit.

Looks like Nashville had the new USL number font on their jerseys for tonight’s friendly against NYCFC (and the kits they wore are also their new primaries for this season):

I wonder why they've only gone with the all blue combo and if that's the combo that'll get used the most this year. Considering their reveal and player photos were taken with the navy shorts.

They probably only packed the light blue shorts since they were planning on debuting the new kit against Minnesota, who wore their dark grey kits. And so that’s what they wore again tonight because the light blue shorts were all they had with them for the new kit. I definitely wouldn’t take it as a sign that the light blue shorts will be worn the most this year. I’d expect there to be a pretty even split between the navy and light blue shorts, with the navy serving as the first choice look and the light blue serving as the second choice, or clash, look.

That’s definitely them. They went with a new supplier this year and the numbers/names just started arriving to the teams this week.

Those particular numbers are ok, but other didgets (1,3) are just brutal.
