Tampa Bay Times Sports editorial: Save us from the Buccaneers’ hideous uniforms

See, at a glance, that looks far too much like Atlanta to me. The Bucs are in a tough spot, because adding black, adding red, using white pants, and lightening their pewter color all make them look more like their division rivals, which is just one of many reasons why I like orange for them. Personally, I think their citrus orange and pewter/cannonball grey can work really well together. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but there’s nothing inherently bad about the combo when evaluated against sound color theory (they’re basically a tint and shade of the same or similar/analogous hues). Adding some red to that makes for a nice palette, in my opinion. I think they could start with the ’97 look and work from there. Less black and red, more orange. Make the pirate reference in the type more clear and understandable in concept while making it more subtle in execution. Maybe something inspired by their current wordmark?

"At a glance" that uniform looks nothing like the falcons. Red jerseys and white pants, sure, but literally every single remotely advanced detail screams otherwise. I'm not buying this argument.

As a person that lived there and went to school there from 1972 to 1997, I knew enough people that liked it. Of course there were some that blamed the losing on the look, however now people are tired of the pewter/red look because it is a loser look since 2007. Now the pewter and red is the joke of the league because of what team it is associated with.

But they aren’t. Now that’s not to say everyone likes the current design, but they still certainly embrace the pewter and red.

As to your assertions? Sorry, I don't buy it. My time in Tampa hasn't been that long as of yet, but I can say that there is a certain stigma attached to the Bruce look. It's not all together negative. They sell throwback gear that sells relatively well, I think, but people aren't head over heels for it like Chargers fans are with powder blue or Rams fans are with the royal blue and athletic gold.

So I don't buy the idea that the Bucs fans loved the creamsicles before 1997. Enough people here have said that everyone was tired of the creamsicle look by 1997, and I'm inclined to believe them over you as the single dissenting voice to the contrary.

Odd shift, but did you move to Tampa? I thought you were in San Diego for some reason.

If I could add another Bucs fan's perspective.  I lived the first 5/6 of my life in the Tampa Bay area, and though I was 9 when it happened, I still kinda remember the switch to red and pewter being a welcomed change.  The creamsicle look now is great nostalgia (I have my fair share of throwback jerseys), but I'd be really surprised if you find many local fans saying that look was a genuinely more appealing look than red and pewter, at least with regard to the 1997-2013 set.

As a Bucs fan still in Tampa, I can’t say anything better.  This sums it up perfectly how I feel, and how it seems to appear in the Bay Area.

So you barely live here during the red and pewter years, yet you state fans associate the red and pewter with losing and don’t like them?

No, the local fans just hate losing in general....and that has little to do with the red and pewter worn on the field.

I love the look, but personally I think they really need the thicker numbers to distinguish the silver from white.

I like the silver numbers, but it does reduce the black a lot.  I think the black numbers give a pretty good balance between silver and black.

With the silver numbers - especially with the thicker outline - I'd like to see how black pants with a silver stripe would work.  It borders on breaking the formula, but it's not too bad on the Panthers, and I think it would make up for the loss of the black in the numbers.  Using black pants with the thicker-outlined numbers would help reduce the imbalance it would cause - as would going with white socks with either silver top or silver/black stripes.

"I hate the new Buccaneers logo. Pewter was boring in 97, even more boring now."

I don't get this. "BORING"? How was it boring? It was a brand new color not used by anyone in sports before and they owned it instantly. They basically invented a color and you call that boring. You could say it's unattractive and that's an opinion someone can have, but "boring" isn't the word. Boring would've been a choice like silver, with a braisher stripe like so many other NFL teams. They went against convention, which is the complete opposite of boring.

Keep in mind that in 1997 the Falcons were a black jersey team with silver pants and had been for around 7 years so the Bucs choosing red as their primary jersey color wasn't that much of an encroachment into the Falcons identity at the time. It's only now looking back that it kind of looks like the current red jersey, white panted Falcons. I also think that pewter and black are different enough that it's not a problem.

The thing I've always liked about the 97 rebrand was it didn't completely toss out the previous identity. They promoted red to primary and kept orange while adding black, a natural choice at the time given how black was coming into play in the late 90's, but they still used the colors they'd always had. It would've been very easy to make that set without orange so I've always appreciated their decision to include it. Always thought it added an extra bit of flourish to the look.

Edit: Atlanta wasn’t even a division rival until 2002.

Also the white pants with the red jerseys feels like it was a somewhat rare combination back then. Rarer than the white pants, white jersey combo.

I wasn’t ever a huge fan of the white pants paired with the red jersey on that 97 set, but that was mainly due to the fact that the pewter pants were VASTLY superior.

But it I did like the white pants quite a bit paired with the white jersey. It really made the orange on that set really pop. It gave them an entirely different look, but instead of looking like it was too much or out of place, it just worked really well. It gave them an extra element to work with that added something to their early season games when it was still miserable hot out. I always thought that was a nice touch.

Shift again, but I think this is worth talking about when it comes to the Bucs' uniforms.

So I'm a Chargers fan because my dad is, and he has a tenuous connection to San Diego. I never had that, and me moving to Tampa coincided with what I like to euphemistically call "the Peak Spanos Years." My frustrations with the Chargers were at an all-time high. So I was in a prime position to be wooed by the Bucs. I even bought a Bucco Bruce throwback hat when I got here, because why not?

Thing is? It just didn't take. The team's disappointing performance certainly didn't help, but look at the teams I root for. Crap play doesn't scare me. The reason it didn't take, I think, is because of the current look. It's so comically bad, so offensive to my sensibilities, that I couldn't cheer for them. My teams have worn bad uniforms before. It's different, though, when a team you already like adopts a bad look. You just have to grumble and go with it. Choosing a new team with an embarrassing uniform, however, just isn't happening.

Had the Bucs been wearing any of their previous identities? I likely would have made the switch. At least on a "trial run." As it is? Nope.

I've been thinking a little bit about how I'd do a new Bucs set, and surprisingly, I think I'd keep more of the current set than I thought I would.  Assuming there was no logo change, here's what I'd do (or at least draw up, if I could make concepts):

Colors:  Darken the red back to the Super Bowl era shade.

Helmet:  Stays the same, other than make the logo normal size

Jersey:  Red home jersey.  Pewter recolorizations of the ship logo on BOTH sleeves (no BUCS logo).  The numbers would be white with a single pewter outline.    Pewter collar.  Road jersey would be the same, but white (and red numbers outlined in pewter).

Pants & socks.  Three pant options:

1) White pants with red, tapered broad stripe with a pewter cap (basically what they wore this year against SF).

2) White pants with pewter, tapered broad stripe with red cap.

3) Red pants with pewter, tapered broad stripe (no cap).  To be worn in a rare monochrome occasion.

I don't have a pewter pant option because right now I have it in my head that the only pewter pants Nike can make is one that looks either black or olive drab.  If they can make pewter pants look like they did in 2013, I would include a pewter option.

Sock color would match the color of the broad stripe of the pants.

And yes, that means I'm basically eliminating orange from the uniform.

Interesting, but I'm getting stuck on the concept of a pirate ship flying a tangerine orange jolly roger.  Wouldn't exactly send the proper message.

Change the orange to red, then add orange sleeve/neck trim and orange NOB and you've got one of the best uniforms in the league, IMO.

Smart is believing half of what you hear. Genius is knowing which half.

The phrase “at a glance” implies we’re not talking about details. From the broadcast view, dark helmet, red jersey, white pants, and dark socks is very much Atlanta’s look. The pewter pants are what make the Bucs’ look unique (in this color scheme).

This was all true in 1997, but it has little bearing on how to best brand the Bucs in 2020. The Falcons are now a division rival, and they wear a red jersey and white pants, so I think that combo is off limits.

The non-black helmet is more than enough to distinguish the two teams.
