Digby Posted March 18, 2019 Share Posted March 18, 2019 ^ That reminds me of a thing I generally dislike about MLS stadium aesthetics, is the constant giant-spaceship look (that's really often largely masking cheap erector set construction). One of the reasons Portland has the best stadium in the league is that, for better and worse, it feels a bit like the league's Fenway or Wrigley when you're there, with all that charming ivy and the classic soaring interior concourses. Of course it also has too-small bathrooms and support poles blocking the view. But the charm is there that's missing from everywhere else; hope the expansion doesn't ruin it. (I should also say that some MLS stadiums look distinctive and beautiful, e.g. Houston, and most of the classic European parks were basically charmless metal sheds, so you don't have the jewel box type of retro-romanticism to dig back into.) I think it's cool that MLS stadiums at least look distinct from other American sports. The news here: Garber says unequivocally that St. Louis and Sacramento are the only cities contending for the 28th franchise. Brian in Boston Posted March 20, 2019 Share Posted March 20, 2019 Inter Miami CF's pitch to redevelop the 64-acre Lockhart Stadium complex in Fort Lauderdale, Florida has received initial support from the municipality's City Commission. In a pair of unanimous 5-0 votes, commissioners first ranked Inter Miami's proposal as their No. 1 choice over a plan put forward by FXE Futbol, then ratified the ranking in a Tuesday evening meeting. The next step in the process will be for Inter Miami and city officials to negotiate a detailed agreement setting the parameters of the soccer organization's use of the property for 50 years. Once the agreement has been hammered out, it will then be evaluated by outside consultants, vetted in a public hearing before the City Commission, and subjected to another commission vote later this year. Inter Miami's proposal calls for the demolition of both Lockhart Stadium and the adjacent Fort Lauderdale Stadium ballpark. On the resultant site, a pre-fabricated, canopied stadium with 18,000 seats and additional luxury suites would be built. The facility would serve as the home of Inter Miami CF for its first two seasons in Major League Soccer, after which it would play host to a Fort Lauderdale-branded USL League One team that is expected to act as a reserve side for the MLS club. Pro lacrosse and rugby are also possible future tenants for the stadium. Additional soccer-specific development at the site would be Inter Miami's administrative offices, training center, and a club-affiliated youth soccer academy. As for public uses of the space, four regulation size soccer/sports fields are proposed to be part of the mix, as are a running trail, playground, public park, and dog park. A restaurant and Drive Shack golf facility are also being considered. Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas told the Sun-Sentinel that construction on the soccer stadium would begin in July, with the build being completed by February of next year. That means that the team's leadership is envisioning fairly swift negotiations with city officials, to say nothing of a construction process devoid of complications. Given the hiccups/hurdles/obstacles that have already plagued the proposed franchise on its path to the pitch, such optimism seems misplaced We shall see. While there are currently "only two frontrunners", according to Garber, the league as doesn't really have leverage with just two cities competing for one slot. The reality is MLS wants at least one more viable city competing to get more from the eventual winning bid. He really wants Phoenix, Detroit, Charlotte, San Diego, or Las Vegas to get back into this because...BUSINESS*. *- Especially if Nashville and Miami were asked not to have local TV deals past 2022. Brian in Boston Posted March 22, 2019 Share Posted March 22, 2019 Ian Ayre, CEO of Nashville SC, has penned an open letter to fans in which he revealed that the team will begin play in its new soccer-specific stadium at the start of the 2022 Major League Soccer season, rather than moving into the facility midway through the 2021 campaign.
