I agree, in all likelihood it will ultimately depend upon how ready, willing, and able a potential owner is to loosen the pursestrings.

That said, Jo Ann Taylor Kindle, Andy and Barbara Taylor, Jim Kavanaugh, and Dave Steward are currently but a handful of investors in a St. Louis Blues ownership group that numbers 15 or 20 people in total. I'd be surprised if they account for a majority of the money that's been placed on the line in the Blues ownership structure.

By contrast, Bill Foley is already the majority owner of the Vegas Golden Knights. As for Marc Davis, he and his mother Carol's 47% ownership stake in the Raiders give them controlling interest in the franchise, as said percentage represents a larger chunk of ownership than any other individual currently holds.

As many people have pointed out in this thread, Las Vegas is a market that is looking at going from playing host to no major professional sports franchise to being asked to potentially support three of them in relatively short order. As a result, most of said people seem to be of the opinion that Las Vegas is being spread too thin. That being the case, will Garber and the MLS brass be more comfortable awarding franchise rights to an investor/operator whose primary focus within the realm of pro sports is said MLS club, or will they opt to go the route of granting said rights to an investor/operator who, arguably, has a more vested interest in another pro sports property?

Time will tell.

It took Dallas 20 years to get three major professional sports teams: Cowboys in 1960, Rangers in 1972 and Mavericks in 1980.  It took another 13 years before we landed the NHL and MLS arrived in 1996.

Well, today the Las Vegas City Council unanimously approved entering into a 180-day negotiating window with The Renaissance Companies, Inc., the entity set to serve as the project manager on billionaire investor Seth Klarman's proposal to redevelop a 62-acre site surrounding Cashman Field.

According to Floyd Kephart, chairman of Renaissance, conversations between his company and Las Vegas city officials have been taking place for 17 months prior to today's city council meeting. By the conclusion of the 6-month negotiating period, it is hoped that city officials, Renaissance, and Klarman's Boston-based hedge fund Baupost Group will have hammered out a financing plan, begun laying the groundwork for the first phase of development, and submitted an expansion application to Major League Soccer.

If the negotiations prove successful, Klarman would purchase Las Vegas Lights FC from its current owner, Brett Lashbrook. While a new 25,000-seat soccer stadium was being built within the proposed development, the Lights would continue to play at Cashman Field. Once the new facility was completed, the team would move into it for MLS play. The old stadium would serve as a training facility for the club.

Fair warning to those who "feel the vapors coming on" over the prospect of Las Vegas landing a third major professional sports franchise: Councilman Cedric Crear closes the linked Las Vegas Review-Journal with a doozy of a quote. Namely...

"It's just a matter of time before we get an MLS team, before we get an NBA team, before we get a Major League Baseball team. Las Vegas is that city."

Reminds of when Springfield was trying to get an NFL team. Someone better make sure Grandpa Simpson isn't left alone!

Ah, Floyd Kephart is back.

He was the point man for the Dubai-funded Coliseum City project which was to build the Raiders a stadium and mixed-use development on the current Coliseum site but wanted a 20% equity share of the Raiders in exchange.  That was between 2013 and 2015 before Alameda County basically said they wouldn't commit any funds to the project and the city of Oakland told him that neither the Athletics nor the Raiders wanted to negotiate or work with him.

If you can't get promoted on merit, just buy a team above you! Unfortunately, this is a normal thing in Mexico.

Yeesh. Republic just announced they're hosting a match vs Lobos later this summer.

Just here to mention that Saint Louis FC of the USL-C knocked off the Chicago Fire in the Open Cup yesterday. I know the Fire aren't exactly world beaters right now, but it's still a significant accomplishment for STLFC to snatch their first ever win against an MLS club and advance to the furthest point of the Open Cup that they have ever been.

Seems like that happens a lot, second-division sides winning their first game over MLS clubs.  Or maybe that's just the way it's been in New York.  ;)

Apparently people were remarking that Columbus put out a stronger team than usual as well.

Sacramento Republic FC were one or two dumb mistakes away from doing the same thing to the Earthquakes. Coulda, woulda, shoulda, no doubt. And that's a great win for St. Louis. But seeing USL teams beat MLS teams in this tournament isn't terribly uncommon. Republic beat RSL (I think) 4-1 two seasons ago in the USOC.

I was rooting for the Republic in that game! Wish they would have won.

And certainly understand that the Open Cup has had USL teams beat MLS teams. It just has never happened for Saint Louis FC before, so it was an important moment for this club.

ATL UTD-Charleston was postponed 2 days, moved back to Georgia, and made closed to the public.

I get why they can’t let fans go, but it sucks to lose a shot to see the team for like $10.

It seemed like a great atmosphere, too, considering the game was relocated due to flooding on short notice. The St. Louligans were out in force.

Ya, it was really generous of Lindenwood to host in a pinch. Flooding in Missouri has been pretty dang bad the past few weeks.

Steve Malik, chairman and owner of USL Championship club North Carolina FC, is set to hold a press conference next Tuesday at which he will announce plans for a $1.9 billion mixed use development just southeast of downtown Raleigh. Part and parcel of said project will be a 20,000-seat soccer stadium that would be put forward as part of a bid to elevate North Carolina FC to Major League Soccer.

Partnering with Malik on the project is developer John Kane, the chairman and CEO of Raleigh's Kane Realty Corporation.
