That being the case, will Garber and the MLS brass be more comfortable awarding franchise rights to an investor/operator whose primary focus within the realm of pro sports is said MLS club, or will they opt to go the route of granting said rights to an investor/operator who, arguably, has a more vested interest in another pro sports property? Time will tell. It took Dallas 20 years to get three major professional sports teams: Cowboys in 1960, Rangers in 1972 and Mavericks in 1980. Brian in Boston Posted June 6, 2019 Share Posted June 6, 2019 Well, today the Las Vegas City Council unanimously approved entering into a 180-day negotiating window with The Renaissance Companies, Inc., the entity set to serve as the project manager on billionaire investor Seth Klarman's proposal to redevelop a 62-acre site surrounding Cashman Field. According to Floyd Kephart, chairman of Renaissance, conversations between his company and Las Vegas city officials have been taking place for 17 months prior to today's city council meeting. By the conclusion of the 6-month negotiating period, it is hoped that city officials, Renaissance, and Klarman's Boston-based hedge fund Baupost Group will have hammered out a financing plan, begun laying the groundwork for the first phase of development, and submitted an expansion application to Major League Soccer. If the negotiations prove successful, Klarman would purchase Las Vegas Lights FC from its current owner, Brett Lashbrook. While a new 25,000-seat soccer stadium was being built within the proposed development, the Lights would continue to play at Cashman Field. Once the new facility was completed, the team would move into it for MLS play. The old stadium would serve as a training facility for the club.Las Vegas bid for MLS stadium faces challenge in Golden Knights owner Fair warning to those who "feel the vapors coming on" over the prospect of Las Vegas landing a third major professional sports franchise: Councilman Cedric Crear closes the linked Las Vegas Review-Journal with a doozy of a quote. He was the point man for the Dubai-funded Coliseum City project which was to build the Raiders a stadium and mixed-use development on the current Coliseum site but wanted a 20% equity share of the Raiders in exchange. That was between 2013 and 2015 before Alameda County basically said they wouldn't commit any funds to the project and the city of Oakland told him that neither the Athletics nor the Raiders wanted to negotiate or work with him. I know the Fire aren't exactly world beaters right now, but it's still a significant accomplishment for STLFC to snatch their first ever win against an MLS club and advance to the furthest point of the Open Cup that they have ever been. Sacramento Republic FC were one or two dumb mistakes away from doing the same thing to the Earthquakes. Coulda, woulda, shoulda, no doubt. And that's a great win for St. Louis. But seeing USL teams beat MLS teams in this tournament isn't terribly uncommon. Republic beat RSL (I think) 4-1 two seasons ago in the USOC. And certainly understand that the Open Cup has had USL teams beat MLS teams. It just has never happened for Saint Louis FC before, so it was an important moment for this club.
