Regardless of the deniability sometimes put forth by people defending use of the word ... the fact that Petke feels the need to switch languages to use it instead of any other more innocent curse sure suggests that there's... a certain something behind this word. At least the way he's intending it. Also, this detail: this is just unhinged behavior! Who brings a sign?? I know it's not all clubs, but MLS for YSA out of the game. Why do we still tolerate the P word? 15 hours ago, Gothamite said: I don’t know. We shouldn’t. Gothamite
Even if that was the choice, which it isn't, I suspect MLS is also interested in keeping the non-bigoted members of its fanbase. Really? It's hard to police speech at stadiums. YSA was being led by the supporters groups at RBA, so the club could come down on it easily enough. But I'm not aware of any SGs that are fueling homophobic chants, so it's harder to tamp down on it. The Green Bay Packers Uniform Database! Now in a handy blog. Digby
I don't think there's any option that doesn't backfire in some way -- As you said it's less of an SG-led thing, though I'd argue certain SGs need to be reined in regardless. Make a show of taking a stand against it, and MLS loses some (idiot) fans and deals with a substantial number of trolls accusing them of being gringos who don't understand the language. Have the ref stop/forfeit games, and it turns into a much larger news story that makes everyone look bad. Corvus
It would be great if they were as hard on homophobic chants as they seem to be being on anti-nazi symbolism in Portland.

I think that’s shameful, but it’s also a very different thing. Much easier to confiscate flags when an SG tries to bring them in than prevent unaccountable people from using offensive and abhorrent language. The Green Bay Packers Uniform Database! If I can make it, I just might. The last time i was there i got a sneak peek at the stadium upgrades and at-that-time-still-being-finished new team shop. Of course I didn't know that until I almost messed around and bought some swag only for one of the employees to tell me the store wasn't open yet and I wasn't supposed to be in there...fifteen minutes and two full hands of merch after I first walked in there. Ha..their loss. I did like the stadium, though...the neighborhood setting kinda reminded me of Lambeau Field in Green Bay, only with hills. And trains. I can do without all three political mumbo-jumbo, though. *Disclaimer: I am not an authoritative expert on stuff...I just do a lot of reading and research and keep in close connect with a bunch of people who are authoritative experts on stuff. || dribbble || Behance ||
dfwabel
Alejandro Bedoya became a man and somewhat famous.. Due to board ToS and rules, I think I better not post a link tothe actions of Bedoya and MLS as Garber begins year 20 as Commissioner.
Digby
I should hope that "end gun violence now" is not a political statement. Bedoya's not advocating for policy. I would hope that an opposition to prejudiced attacks falls in the same bucket as the camo and pride warmup tops. Is second-tier English soccer still really that much better of an opportunity than spending time in MLS? That's rather telling, and not in a good way for US soccer, if that's really the case.
