RSL coach Mike Petke has been suspended for two additional weeks (total of 3 MLS games) for apparently using a certain Spanish homophobic slur towards match officials in their Leagues Cup game.

(RSL is suspending him from all team activity for two weeks without pay, in addition.)

You know, I used to like Mike Petke... until right then.

Petke's rant last year at Minnesota doesn't help him.

Regardless of the deniability sometimes put forth by people defending use of the word ... the fact that Petke feels the need to switch languages to use it instead of any other more innocent curse sure suggests that there's... a certain something behind this word. At least the way he's intending it.

Also, this detail: this is just unhinged behavior! Who brings a sign??

I wonder when FIFA will start penalizing Mexican clubs and the national team for using that chant.

I know it's not all clubs, but MLS for YSA out of the game. Why do we still tolerate the P word?

I don’t know.  We shouldn’t.

Because MLS doesn't want to blow a massive hole into its Mexican-American fanbase?

Even if that was the choice, which it isn't, I suspect MLS is also interested in keeping the non-bigoted members of its fanbase.

Really?  It's hard to police speech at stadiums.  YSA was being led by the supporters groups at RBA, so the club could come down on it easily enough.  But I'm not aware of any SGs that are fueling homophobic chants, so it's harder to tamp down on it.

I don't think there's any option that doesn't backfire in some way -- As you said it's less of an SG-led thing, though I'd argue certain SGs need to be reined in regardless. Make a show of taking a stand against it, and MLS loses some (idiot) fans and deals with a substantial number of trolls accusing them of being gringos who don't understand the language. Have the ref stop/forfeit games, and it turns into a much larger news story that makes everyone look bad.

It would be great if they were as hard on homophobic chants as they seem to be being on anti-nazi symbolism in Portland.

I think that’s shameful, but it’s also a very different thing.  Much easier to confiscate flags when an SG tries to bring them in than prevent unaccountable people from using offensive and abhorrent language.

I go and run across this post as I'm on my way into Portland...I was looking at potentially catching a game there too, ha.

Oh, you still should. Just don't expect to be able to protest fascism while you're there. Same in Seattle.

If I can make it, I just might. The last time i was there i got a sneak peek at the stadium upgrades and at-that-time-still-being-finished new team shop. Of course I didn't know that until I almost messed around and bought some swag only for one of the employees to tell me the store wasn't open yet and I wasn't supposed to be in there...fifteen minutes and two full hands of merch after I first walked in there. Ha..their loss. I did like the stadium, though...the neighborhood setting kinda reminded me of Lambeau Field in Green Bay, only with hills. And trains.

I can do without all three political mumbo-jumbo, though.

I should hope that "end gun violence now" is not a political statement. Bedoya's not advocating for policy. I would hope that an opposition to prejudiced attacks falls in the same bucket as the camo and pride warmup tops.

Hot rumor is that Wayne Rooney is gonna depart DC to become player-coach at Derby County. Didn’t know player-coach setups were still a thing at that level.

John Terry did that at Aston Villa two years ago I believe. Part of the deal was reported that he requested that if they played  Chelsea he not be put in the game day squad.

It's confirmed on ESPN.com today.

Player movement is soccer is really weird compared to other sports. It was fun while it lasted with Rooney at DC; too bad for their playoff chances now.

He'll apparently be at DC through this season (Unless I read that wrong).

Seems like a strange move. Is second-tier English soccer still really that much better of an opportunity than spending time in MLS? That's rather telling, and not in a good way for US soccer, if that's really the case.

Could be a family decision too.
