Right, the only one that didn't change was Minnesota and even they at least switched from the full wordmark to the acronym.

I have no strong feelings on the existing logo, but that kelly green + navy blue color scheme is so nice and sorely underutilized, like that one 90s Arsenal kit cursed the colorway itself forever.

Now that St. Louis is getting a MLS team, what are the rules about changing their logo? Does the USL have rights to it? I know Nashville is changing theirs, and I can’t remember what Cincinnati did. Would be a shame because I like the current STLFC badge.

MLS controls each teams logos, so they'll be getting a change of some sort. It took huge fan backlash to keep Seattle Sounders from becoming Emerald City FC.

so do we judge the grand MLS/MX champion from Campeones Cup or Leagues Cup or the CCL?

Campeones Cup features a MLS team in mid-season form vs a Mexican team 3 games into their season. Champions League features Mexican teams halfway into their season vs MLS teams 3 weeks into their preseason. Neither is a good barometer. I look at it like a science experiment. In either example, one of the subjects  has outside influences that reduce their ability to act at full strength. The Campeones Cup has a smaller differential though, because Mexican teams can throw a lot more money at the issue to bring the sides closer to parity. MLS cannot do that in Champions League.

I agree that the green-and-blue scheme would be unique in the league, and I also like the STLFC badge. But I don't see it sticking around, mostly because of Enterprise's involvement in the franchise. I assume they'd want to put their stamp on the franchise and build a brand in their vision.

As much as I love STLFC and have embraced everything they do, the club doesn't seem to have cemented itself in the broader St. Louis culture in the way that maybe Cincinnati did before they made the jump. Not sure if it's the lower-division status or the fact that their venue is in the suburbs. There's still a lot of frustration aired by STLFC supporters every time someone mentions how, with MLS, St. Louis will finally be getting pro soccer.

from that CBS article, I found this little snippet

Quote

Officials with the St. Louis bid would not comment on the reports last week. The league is set to expand from 27 to 30 teams, and sources tell CBS Sports that Sacramento is closing in on the next expansion spot

So there's still hope for Bucfan and Republic to still get in!

There is but I think Sacramento is *always* the next one up, always smoke and mirrors but then left holding the bag in the end.

I know there are always complications with investors and stadia and so on .... but hard not to shake the feeling that MLS just doesn't see Sacramento as a market it wants to be in. Of course I thought/still think the same about Columbus.

It's frustrating because it's getting to the point where even if Sacramento does eventually win the bid, the way this whole act has played out is wearing a lot of people's patience pretty thin. If it does work out, I worry that some of the enthusiasm for all of this will be eroded by the time the finish line is crossed. There's only so long you can sustain excitement before people lose energy. It's going to be a real shame if they've worked this hard for this long only to limp across the finish line.

That's definitely a large problem this bid is facing, but they have an even bigger problem on their hands if this doesn't go the right way.

It's Sacramento Soccer Day on Saturday which is basically a celebration of soccer in Sacramento, and the very first one in 2013 was when they announced the creation of the franchise and unveiled our branding package. I can't really see any other day for an announcement that would make sense. If Saturday comes and goes and we walk away with absolutely zero information (Which as happened so many times already. "Today's the day!", and then nothing), I'm fully convinced Sacramento going to get jumped by Charlotte and then they're absolutely :censored:ed.

I'm still not convinced it'll happen, like, in the slightest. This whole idea has always been a bit of a longshot, and there are SEVERAL cities out there that I simply think are much stronger candidates, if I'm being totally objective about all of this. MLS has NEVER wanted anything to do with Sacramento, and the fact that they're even being considered is a bit of a miracle. This is it, y'all. If it doesn't happen this round, and I've said this several times here already, it's NEVER going to happen. They're basically the Rochester Rhinos if this bid falls through. This isn't sustainable long-term without the MLS bid. Pretty much everything they have planned for the future has funding that's contingent on moving to MLS. If that falls through, investors are going to start jumping ship and will attempt to recoup whatever they can. Those involved in this bid have basically pushed all of their chips to the center of the table on this round of bidding and if the next few cards that are turned over aren't in their favor, I can't see this team lasting another five years in any league.

I've never been under the impression that a St. Louis-based Major League Soccer expansion franchise arising from this bid was necessarily going to take the pitch in MLS utilizing the badge and colors of Saint Louis FC.

Yes, World Wide Technologies co-founder and CEO Jim Kavanaugh - who is a partner in the MLS4TheLou bid - is Chairman of the Board of the Scott Gallagher Soccer Club. In turn, Kavanaugh was a driving force behind having Scott Gallagher Soccer Club acquire the rights to operate a St. Louis-based United Soccer League Pro expansion franchise in time for the league's 2015 season. In fact, I believe that Kavanaugh is still President and Chairman of the Board of SLSG Pro LLC, the entity that owns and operates Saint Louis FC today. And I'd be shocked if the MLS4TheLou effort hasn't benefitted from considerable logistical support from Saint Louis FC staff throughout the bid process.

That said, what has clearly separated the current effort to secure a Major League Soccer franchise for St. Louis from the attempts that have come before it is the financial muscle of the Taylor family. They're the multigenerational business and philanthropic heavyweights who possessed the bona fides to not only get Don Garber and the MLS brass to give St. Louis another look after previous failed attempts, but the cold, hard cash to get local politicos to take them seriously.

So, from where I'm sitting, it seems that a member of the Taylor family is likely to be exercising considerable clout with regard to team branding... and that person is most likely Carolyn Kindle Betz, senior VP and executive director of Enterprise Holdings Foundation, as well as the lead partner of an MLS4TheLou ownership group in which the majority stake will be female-owned. How married is she to bringing the Saint Louis FC up to MLS?

Might the franchise take to the pitch under the name Saint Louis FC and garbed in Navy and Green? Sure, I suppose it's possible. However, I wouldn't bet the house on it... and I think there's absolutely no chance that the MLS team is wearing the USL Championship side's badge.

From what I've read it's actually very unlikely that the St. Louis MLS club would share a brand identity or name with Saint Louis FC. This will not be seen as the USL team moving to MLS unlike some other recent expansion franchises. It will likely be something entirely new.

I would have said the same about San Antonio FC, but I think the Spurs decided it's cheaper to pay back the county for not getting into MLS than to deal with the headaches associated with getting in. They control the stadium, the best soccer fields in the county and I think they've decided that's enough for them now.

I still think that for the jump to MLS, STLFC oughta change their colors to brown and orange, a color scheme unique in soccer, and a perfect homage to a certain defunct team...

Maybe for a secondary kit idea it can work. Most teams don't like connecting themselves to teams with a history of failure, which is why whenever Spiders is brought up in Cleveland people get green in the face.

With ESPN flashing the St. Louis FC badge I believed that was them stating that the team would be moving up to MLS completely, not continuing as a USL Championship team while a MLS team was put in over top of them. Will they keep the badge? Most likely not, because most teams get a new badge after moving to MLS. I'd like to see maybe kelly green and sky or Columbia blue if they feel they need to keep a green/blue colorway.

A lot of what you’ve said here could be said for St. Louis too. I wasn’t in the room, but the reporting gave the impression that if MLS passed on St. Louis this time, they’d never get St. Louis because the pending stadium plan was dependent on it. Sacramento was seen as one of the biggest challengers to St. Louis for a franchise, but if they don’t get one soon; Charlotte, San Diego, and Phoenix could be tough competition.

All three of which are substantially more attractive choices to MLS than Sacramento.
