You know, when the new Key Arena opens in Seattle, we're going to have a similar experience: more and more stuff is going to want to be here and it's going to be awesome. As it is right now, Seattle is losing a lot of concert acts that are going to Tacoma, and it's a bummer if you like things like Justin Timberlake and Lady Gaga.

I'm still frustrated that the anchor tenant will be NHL hockey, and any NBA/WNBA franchise will need to compete with hockey for preferred dates. It's backwards to this region's priorities, but it seems like the promise of NBA alone wasn't enough to get the Key renovation done.

And should Ballmer not find what he needs in Inglewood, the Hansen site in Seattle's stadium district (2 miles south of the Key and situated in an industrial area with the baseball and football stadiums -- what a concept) might still be in play.

If Seattle is going to poach a team, I'd rather have the Clippers or Pelicans roster anyway.

Yeah but Seattle has the benefit in that it's just a better all around city than Sacramento. It has a larger population than Sacramento (Metro is nearly twice the size), TONS of industry from large businesses (Microsoft, Boeing, Starbucks, Amazon, etc. Not to mention shipping, fishing, and other maritime industry) while Sacramento is more centered around government, and you already have three (soon to be four) top level pro sports teams with already well established arenas/stadiums.

Seattle will be just fine, and it's already a MAJOR power player on the west coast. They may lose the occasional concert date here and there to Tacoma, but Seattle is just too large and powerful of a city to miss out on the best opportunities. If there's a way to work in bringing back the Sonics, it's going to happen. There isn't a single doubt in my mind about that.

On the other hand, if Sacramento had lost the Kings? Although I probably thought differently years ago, that's probably it for us. We're banished to being Fresno with a big shiny domed capital building.

getting Golden1 was the real gain.

Absolutely.

Getting new stadium/arena deals done in California is a prohibitively difficult task for several reasons as it is. But getting an arena deal done in downtown Sacramento seemed damn near impossible. What you have to remember is that Sacramento is one of the oldest major cities on the west coast, and unlike cities like San Francisco, the infrastructure was never really maintained to adapt to change. There wasn't even a major highway that bypassed the city (like you see in just about every major city in the country) until the early 1980s. Building just about anything in the downtown area was a pretty foolhardy endeavor because it just wasn't built for that type of expansion, and really, there wasn't any motivation for any of that to change.

This was also where having Steinberg in the State Senate really helped.  He was able to use his clout as President Pro Tem to get the expedited review process through the legislature and signed by the Governor.  IIRC this also helped the projects in Inglewood and San Francisco as well and will help with the Railyards stadium.  Caveat is I think Steinberg's been a horrible mayor, but he was useful there.

Then Golden 1 came around and basically changed everything. A lot of people (Including me) thought putting an arena in downtown was crazy because, how in the hell was anyone supposed to get around down there when it's already miserably crowded (Think Queen Anne near Key Arena during concerts, but every single day)? But what's happened is putting an arena down there has basically forced the city/state to implement certain infrastructure changes, that have been DESPERATELY needed for decades, and it's really transformed the way people see downtown.

When I moved here close to 20 years ago I lived Downtown close to where G1 is now.  The first time I went to Downtown Plaza I wondered why the arena wasn't there.  Made so much sense then and it's done so much for the area.

I'm not an expert by any means when it comes to infrastructure and civil engineering, but I can say without a single shred of doubt that the new soccer stadium we're about to start building wouldn't have been possible without Golden 1 clearing all the hurdles it needed to clear. The new stadium is going to be built in an area that has been looking for a development project for more than 100 years, and it's basically set to double the size of downtown once the full range of construction is finished. Golden 1 being built has legitimately changed the face of Sacramento in so many ways, and it's helped to turn it from a relatively modest city (despite it being the capital), to a city that has the potential to be a huge player within the state from a business perspective.

Agreed.  In that respect G1 was a trailblazer.  I've been here long enough to remember when 7th Street ended at the tracks and didn't go all the way to Richards.  I hope the MLS stadium does for the Railyards and River District what G1 did for Downtown.  Your last sentence is key because I would love to see the city diversify it's economy and get away from being just a government town.  That was one of the biggest lessons the powers that be here needed to learn from the 2008 recession because we probably would have fared better here with a more robust and diverse economy.

I'm looking forward to the block party on Monday.  I'll for sure be there.

I get the feeling that the NBA will be the last of the major leagues to expand to 32 and probably not until after a new CBA is signed and implemented but who knows, maybe they expand before MLB does because of the never ending sagas of the Oakland A's and Tampa Bay Rays stadium issues.

I always felt like the NBA was just waiting for Seattle to get a stadium deal done to expand, since it's like 99.99999% a lock that the Sonics would be team 31. All the NBA would need to do is find a second city/ownership group and with all the money in the NBA right now, I'm sure there are plenty of people that would jump at that chance. The MLB needs to figure out its attendance before it even considers expanding (although that's not to say they won't make the boneheaded move and expand to 32 soon). I'm of the mind that the NBA could expand to 36 if it really wanting to (6 divisions of 6, nice and even) and that it's the only Big 4 that could do so (the MLS could feasibly expand to even more than that, but they seem to be slowing down).

Dan Issel is involved in trying to get an NBA expansion team to Louisville:

I don't know about that.  If Louisville ever becomes a major league city, I would think it will be when MLS decides to expand to 40.  With Sacramento likely to be announced on Monday, Charlotte could be next if Tepper gets his ducks in a row.  Now if Tepper does get his MLS team, will he be like Arthur Blank and have a winning and successful team that sells out every home game?  Or will it be like Clark Hunt in FC Dallas, where nobody cares?  I would think that Tepper will want to be more like Blank than Hunt in regards to MLS.

I'd love to see Louisville in the NBA, I think that it would work great. Personally, my choice for expansion alongside Seattle is Vancouver (moving Minnesota to the East), but adding teams in the PNW at the same time might not be the best idea.

I'm pretty sure that Charlotte will be the next MLS city. I don't see any of the other potential contenders as nearly as good a bid as one that's funded by a billionaire owner with a stadium plan already in place (even if that doesn't include a SSS) that fills a geographical gap in the league with strong support from local fans and businesses. It's more a matter of when will the team play, although I don't want to jinx myself. I think that any Charlotte would be closer to Atlanta than Dallas (although I'm biased) simply because of the stadium, which would be downtown and not in a suburb. It really helps get people excited for a game if they can hear the fans from their apartments while watching the game on TV, you know?

Yea, Issel is nearing two years on the job for a group who been at this for four.

They cannot make money at the Yum! Center as the U of L's Athletic Association holds the master lease, thus the advertising and premium seat revenue streams, and has the ability to buy it outright.

Sounders/FC Dallas is a banger.

4-3 in extra time stoppage time.

EDIT: Seattle wins but barely. I fully expect them to play Portland -- for the millionth time -- again next week.

MLS playoffs! Single elimination turned out to be an awesome idea after all.

Haha -- watching these games on the treadmill helps.

Amazing game though. Clearly could have gone either way. I'm just happy for no penalties.

Even from a neutral perspective I agree. It's much more exciting to have a goal scored during extra time instead of penalties.

I expected nothing out of the Revs today, but they ended up hanging with ATL just enough that I was disappointed about the loss. Ah well. A full season of Bou + Gil + competent coaching is a great thing to look forward to, at least, and that’s before whatever other personnel moves happen — not sure I’ve ever been optimistic entering a Revs offseason before!

What the hell happened at the end of DC/Toronto?

IMO; DC was frustrated and started making mistakes and TFC capitalized.
It’s gonna be a great week for my soccer fandom. TFC v NYCFC and Forge v Cavalry in the CPL final.
