There is no clear choice for #30 is there?

Having seen their operation up close, my pick would have to be Phoenix. They have a great ownership group, an incredible fan base, and are working on getting a new stadium. They’re the bid that’s most similar to Sacramento’s bid IMO. I have a bit of a soft spot for their operation.

Charlotte has the the cash and the ownership heft (which in reality is all that matters, sadly) but they haven’t put in the time yet. I say let them come with 31 or 32.

I was anti-Sacramento in MLS because they stole our NBA team while we were in the act of stealing it from them.

But they've been a passionate fanbase with a great name and logo. I wish them well.

They stole what from you now?

It will probably be Charlotte for 30. If they decide to go to 32 probably Phoenix and im guessing Indy. Im not sold on Charlotte at all, pretty much for the same reason I dont think Austin will work. Like Sacramento, Phoenix and Indy have proven themselves by fan support and draw very well. Charlotte has never drawn well except when the national teams come. They have support for one game but not a whole season, and Im not just talking about the Independence. Im talking previous Charlotte soccer teams as well. But Charlotte has the money, which is really what MLS cares about most. In my eyes Id give Phoenix 30, with Indy at 31. For 32 I could see Las Vegas (unfortunately), Tampa, or Louisville.

Man, the joke was right in there. I thought it was obvious.

Gonna be honest. There's a part of me that wants to see at least one Sacramento Republic MLS game in 2022 played at whatever their calling Bonney Field these days. Hell, they let DC United play a game at the 4K seat Maryland Soccerplex before Audi Field opened lol.

Tampa had a really cool and interesting stadium renovation plan a while back, right? I remember it looking super different and unique but also kinda small. And seems like their owners aren’t MLS level?

I think San Antonio FC should give it another shot even with Austin FC 80 miles away.

Pretty sure he’s given up.  He’ll need to sell the club to somebody who wants to make the next push.

I am far from sold on Charlotte.  I think Phoenix must be considered the front-runner, with Detroit as another market that MLS wants to be in.  I also see San Diego in before San Antonio.  But who knows?

That renovation plan was under the previous ownership. He ended up selling the team to the Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays dealing with their own stadium issues have no interest in fielding an MLS club so if a new team comes to Tampa-St Pete it would be under a different group, Its unfortunate. I really wanted to see the Rowdies in MLS. i wanted them more over Nashville.

Papa Murphy’s Park (Take and Bake pizza chain).

As excited as as I am for the new stadium, there is a very large part of me that is going to miss playing on the fairgrounds at Cal Expo. It’s an unreasonable amount of work getting that place set up for every game, as we basically have to bring in everything outside of the bleachers to set up every week for game days, but I can’t tell you how proud it makes me to see it all set up and ready to go for a match. People truly don’t realize just how much effort goes into getting that place ready for game days. I’ll always love that rinky dink little park.

Speaking of being proud, I can’t even really describe how incredible tonight was. It was the culmination of nearly a decade of hard work by a ton of different people. Getting to celebrate that moment with all of the fans and all of the people I’ve worked with and everyone who has put their entire lives into this project was absolutely surreal. There have been a handful of rather s****y moments throughout this process, and times where nobody thought this crazy little idea was going to ever be possible. Tonight has made all of it worth it, though. I reached out and gave a big ol hug to our founder and thanked him for all he did to help make this happen. He in turn told me that nothing he did would’ve been possible without me and the rest of the awesome staff we have. We both walked away with a few happy tears after that.

To be honest with you, I’m a bit overcome with the emotion of it all right now. It’s been a bit of a tough year in a lot of ways, and I’ve had some stretches where I’ve been pretty openly negative and pessimistic. I want to bottle up some of today and keep it stored away for the next time I have a really low moment. That way I can always remember exactly just why I do all of this bull :censored: I do and why I put so much of myself into this.

Thank you guys for all listening to me over the course of this journey. I’ve been a bit of a roller coaster at times, admittedly. I’m glad I’ve been able to share some of this with you. Hopefully soon I can share even more in the future.

Also, I wanna give a special shoutout to board member @tp49, who I had the pleasure of meeting tonight. Even cooler guy in person than I thought, and he’s long since been one of my favorite posters here.

I love the idea, especially since we've seen how Cincinnati and Columbus get amped up for the games. San Antonio are rivals in chili, tacos and horribly maintained streets, let's up the ante and add MLS too. It wouldn't be a manufactured rivalry either, the folks here in SA absolutely feel Precourt killed off any chance the Spurs would have followed through on pushing for MLS when he tried moving the Crew, then was given an expansion team as compensation when the MLS got called out for planning that move over a year before. That being said, a lot would need to happen around the stadium to get it MLS ready. You can't build parking immediately next to the stadium because Morgan's Wonderland, Heroes Stadium and several physical therapy businesses are right outside the stadium. You can play at the Alamodome, but I think that if that happens you'll end up having the team stay there if they can't figure out what to do with Toyota Field.

Yeah, I love the classic look, and the history, and the waterfront stadium idea, and the potential for a derby with Orlando, and the media market thing just makes sense ... but also it doesn't seem like the Rowdies ever set the minor leagues on fire the way Cincy or Sacramento etc. did so it's tough to lose too much sleep over their missing out. I'm also getting the same vibes from Florida as I do with Austin FC and Texas, like, "are we sure people actually want this team?"

Premier League weekend is scheduled to come down to Austin, I know it's a different league but I would expect to see a lot of Plastic Tree FC gear getting handed out. It will also be somewhat of a barometer to see how well they and Austin Bold can turnout in comparison to supporter clubs for the Premier League teams. Their marketing department has been out and about letting people know they are on their way in. San Antonio FC fans were even ticked off because they set up stands at a UTSA game to advertise for a team that isn't stepping onto a field for 15 months.

Yeah, it's interesting to me that Austin seems to regularly score high on those soccer TV ratings roundups you see around big international games. But I remain unconvinced by the local market, so we'll see. The NBC folks did one of those outside of Fenway Park in Boston last year, and it was a massive jam-packed success, and the Revs had absolutely nothing to do with it.

I'd expect NBC to try and focus on the Austin supporters groups for Liverpool and Spurs since they'll be the televised Sunday afternoon/morning game after Newcastle vs Wolves, and then also hit up the Arsenal and Manchester United fan groups.NBC doesn't really have a vested interest in MLs so that makes it easier to overlook them, other than to discuss former EPL players playing over here.

So who is your surprise darkhorse candidate for #31 or #32?  I am going to say New Mexico United if they can get a stadium deal and a billionaire to own the team.

You've mentioned this a couple times on here, so I'll bite.

I'm incredibly impressed with what New Mexico United has accomplished in one year. I think it would be a remarkable success story were that club to make it to MLS and that fan base would absolutely support it.

But I'm just speaking sentimentally. There's almost zero chance it happens. The next rounds of expansion will carry fees north of $250 million. I don't know who would make that kind of investment in Albuquerque, which would become the league's smallest market by far.

That said, pay attention to what they're doing down there at New Mexico United. They've built the foundation for something really special. It's exciting to see.
