Plus this would also keep the teams even when Austin joins in 2021. It makes sense.

Also I would not be for a "Queen City" name as Cincinnati is also a Queen City. FCC and Charlotte Independence played for the Queen Cities Cup during the USL tenure. It honestly wasnt a rivalry as say Louisville or Indy were.

But Charlotte is not only older, but also actually named after a queen, so I feel like we have a better claim to the title. I personally want Charlotte to be in the name, but something involving Queen City is superior to Carolina.

No idea how reliable this is, but worth posting anyway: https://www.reddit.com/r/Charlotte/comments/dwsu7n/some_insider_news_on_mls_to_charlotte/

Big points:

  • Announcement as early as Dec. 6th.
  • Team will start in 2021, before Sac Republic and St. Louis
  • Temporary HQ locations are being selected before a permanent location
  • Names being considered include "Queen City" but the city of Charlotte wants "Charlotte" (as do I) but either Tepper or Tom Glick said the team would have "Carolina" as the name

Very excited about this news, but take it with a mountain full of salt. I have no idea who this guy is and if he's reliable or not. Either way worth a discussion.

I’ll just say this as a battle hardened veteran of the MLS expansion rumors war.  Be VERY wary of what you read until Don Garber puts a scarf around David Tepper’s neck.

You got it, man. Watching Sacramento be jerked around like that sucked to see. I just hope what he said about Charlotte being "front of the line" in regards to expansion was true.

Better than "Carolina United". My personal choice is "Racing Club Charlotte", or RCC. Entirely unique, very local, and a neat acronym.

Out of the three options Garber has mentioned for #30, I'd prefer not to have Las Vegas.  Las Vegas already has NHL and in September 2020, they are getting the Raiders.  Now they want MLS, MLB and (probably) NBA.  That's way to much in a short period of time.  They will go from zero major league teams in 2016 to potentially three by 2023.  Heck, maybe even four or five within a decade.  For me, it's Charlotte and then Phoenix.  If MLS gets to 32 (and they probably will) I would prefer no Las Vegas for 31 or 32.

Yeah, Vegas is last on the last of every major sports league for me. We have yet to see if the Golden Knights will be a lasting commodity (but I'm sure the Raiders will draw because it's football), so Vegas should not be searching for even more teams. For me, if (when) MLS gets to 32, it should be Charlotte, Phoenix, and Detroit.

I've resigned myself that they'll pick a Carolina name to try to encompass the whole region à la the Panthers, but I'd insist on Charlotte if I'm the city and I'm giving a multibillionaire lots and lots of money to make this happen. That being said, if the idea is that the team would represent both Carolinas, Carolina United (Carolinas United?) would be one of the better applications of the "United" moniker in MLS.

Yeah, if they're going with Carolina, Carolina United actually makes a ton of sense. It would probably be the best use of "United" in the MLS.

If that happens,  when they play Atlanta United  it could be called the Southern United Derby...
