I’m laughing somewhat bitterly at the notion that the NFL might actually require uniform socks to be, you know, uniform. Sorry I should have been more specific. I meant that, for the most part, teams that wore solid socks this week (Bengals, Saints, Jags, etc.) had a unified look. The examples you posted showed my main issue with old the socks. There is no consistency.

For the Saints in particular, I think it makes a really cool line. And, forgive me, but the all-black look from the helmet down makes the players look sleeker and faster. How do you get blacker than black? Off topic - our high school’s main football rival wore head-to-toe black (which was not common at all around here in early 90s), and they also had a lot of minority players. There was a newspaper article about how intimidating they looked in their all-black, and yada yada yada. In his pregame speech, our coach went on a rant and screamed about how proud they are of their blackness, which made every player on our team (who’s stars were black) lift their heads up and drop their jaws. He was clearly referring to their look and the news article, but still. It's not that I'm a traditionalist, it's that the socks are another place to showcase a color and now that's missing. When you wear a plain white sock the whole look doesn't look "seamless" to me, it looks incomplete. I've always felt the same way. And pretty much liked Color Rush BUT the lack of white bottoms. Sidenote: Last night my GF said NOLA looked like they were wearing leotards. I thought of y'all
scraw28
One day eventually........The NFL will get their act together and regulate on uniforms .... The last 3 years players have gone outrageous with their uniforms from cleats socks and not tucking jerseys....this is supposed to be the ultimate team game......zero professionalism in appearance.....I'm all for players looking good...but it's getting too high school harry ......get it together NFL That was a mistake by the nfl that they laxed the footwear and sock policy

WavePunter
For those who think the old sock rule was bad because it had too much variation, wouldn't it make more sense to just tighten down on that rule, rather than throw it out altogether? I don’t think the sock rules were thrown out, only loosened even more. Obviously the league doesn’t “think the old sock rule was bad because it had too much variation”. I disagree, but they seem to be happy with that variation. The Green Bay Packers Uniform Database! Now in a handy blog.

Can we see the Bills with their blue jersey, white pants, and red color rush socks? - - - I think it’s worth noting that the only teams who had uniform sock lengths amongst their players were those who chose the full stockings. So it’s a matter of picking your poison: Do you go with the traditional half color/half white sock, while risking the likely lack of uniformity, or do you choose uniformity but with the contentious look of a full sock? Theoretically, sure, but I don’t think they’d be able to tighten down on it (i.e. fining players or prohibiting them from entering the game without proper socks) without collectively bargaining the rule change and the consequences for breaking it. They just need to choose one style and commit to enforcing it. In baseball you have different stirrup lengths, some high pants some low pants, some solid socks. I think it's kinda cool and a nice think for players to have the option of changing. Same with basketball - you have your jason terrys and you have your tmacs. I like some players with the high whites, some with as little white as possible, and the lineman that just wear the stock socks. It may not look completely "uniform" but these are humans not robots, i think some variation is good.

Kinda defeats the whole purpose of a uniform, though. I hate it. Besides, players already have a great deal of individual flair already, what with their shoes and wristbands and helmet style and eyeshade color and body armor, not to mention their jewelry. I don't think they need that one last bit of flair to avoid being mistaken for robots. The Green Bay Packers Uniform Database! Now in a handy blog. I don't think there should be more than an inch or two variation from player to player.. it's a standard, team-issued part of the uniform.. it should match.. I'm ok with players preferring to accomplish the uniform goal in different ways (for example: if a player wants to wear solid color tights with crew length white socks instead of knee-high socks that are colored on top and white on bottom, I'm ok with that, because you can't tell the difference from more than 5 feet away), but it should still look uniform.. players already have their own individual number, their name on their back, choice of gloves, cleats, and other accessories, etc.. they should at least be expected to wear their socks properly..
