Look at the Clippers trying to be all "hard" lol.

Look, this just isn't what the Clippers are, and this just screams that to me, trying to be something they're not. As much as they might want it to be, this isn't their brand. They aren't the team of the city, and trying to take on that "inner city" aesthetic, from the court to these jerseys, it all rings hollow. And those hats, pairing the Old English font with that Clippers logo, it's just laughable. Win something before you try to come with this type of swagger.

Aesthetically, the "Los" on top of the "Angeles" rather than on the same line is an odd choice for me. And as others have said, the number font just doesn't jive with that "Los Angeles" font.

This comes across as written by a rather scared Lakers fan.

Scared? Nah. I recognize the Clippers have a strong team this year, and it'll be a fight. But scared of the Clippers? No. Especially not in the context we're actually talking about in this unifrom/identity/representing the city discussion.

Even if the Clippers are good, even if the Clippers were to make the NBA Finals, even if the Clippers beat the Lakers to do it, my points about their identity would still all stand.

I realize I popped off pretty aggressively in the first post, but I've backed up all my thoughts in subsequent posts.

Just end this please. There is no basis to your argument whatsoever. We get it. You don't like the Clippers, they have mediocre history, and they're soft, so the tough guy image doesn't fit them. I really don't know how any of that has a lick to do with presenting a new uniform. Who the hell are you to say "These guys shouldn't wear this because they haven't won anything, and they're not tough, they don't represent LA"... Really? It just sounds super childish and has no substance to it.

What if I just think the uniforms aren't good? There really isn't a basis to that beyond my own opinion on what makes a good uniform, but yet, here we are with an entire message board dedicated to such discussion. I've even provided examples as to my thought process in previous posts that you chose to not comment on, but that's you. You're allowed to not like my opinion. That's what we're all here for.

This has nothing to do with not liking the Clippers, truly. What it does have to do with is that mediocre history. And what it has to do with presenting a new uniform is I don't think these uniforms are good representations of the Clippers and their overall aesthetic. As you've said, they're trying something new and going a different direction, and all that is fine. But like I said in the other posts, sometimes it works (like the Miami Vice unis) and sometimes it doesn't (the Pacers' Hickory High jerseys, or the Clippers alternates last year). This one, it doesn't work for me because it doesn't ring true to the Clippers, their identity, or how they represent their small slice of Los Angeles. It's a hollow attempt to be something their not.

I never said anything about not being tough, and I never said they don't represent LA. Just that if they want to try and represent this part of LA, that part of LA isn't going to rep them. They'll rep the Lakers, through and through.

And I'm just a guy that's lived in Southern California my entire life, interacted with people all over these communities, and seen the Clippers up close in this market for nearly 30 years. But, what do I know?

So you're essentially saying, the Clippers aren't allowed to try anything different, separate themselves from the past Clippers teams that amounted to nothing, or signal change in the direction of the organization and team.

So here's what I liken it to.

It's like a middling NHL goalie who gets a "bad :censored:" airbrushed mask done up but who still lets in 3-4 goals a game. Sure, he's got the right to make himself look as imposing as possible but come on. The added grit makes the end result look silly.

"But Ice_Cap" you might say, "this Clippers team is a real contender! They could actually win and justify this new look!"

Sure! They could! This isn't the first good Clippers team though. It wasn't so long ago that they blew their (as of this writing) best shot at a championship by blowing a 2-0 series lead to Houston in the second round of the playoffs. The Clippers always seem to find a way to Clipper.

And yes, this team is better. Know who else is better than last year? The Lakers. The Jazz are looking pretty damn good too. The Warriors are still pretty formidable. And the Rockets? Maybe their gamble pays off.

Point is the NBA is wide open like it's never been before, and the West is crowded. So I wouldn't be banking on the Clippers cashing any cheques just yet.
And until they actually manage to win something of note? They're ALWAYS going to be the generic also-rans of LA. Regardless of what style of wordmark they run with.

Got it. The Clippers aren’t allowed to represent any part of the city they play for. Very smart logic.

Let me ask you this.

In what way are the Clippers more "Compton" than the Lakers? I mean it. They play in the exact same building as the Lakers. Their corporate offices are closer to Little Tokyo, and right down the street from the Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Usually when teams in the same locale represent different neighbourhoods it's geography that defines them.

The Clippers claiming to be a Compton team though? That would be like the Nets claiming to represent Brooklyn while sharing the Garden with the Knicks.

Which is what I think @Still MIGHTY is getting at when he says this whole thing is inauthentic. In what tangible way are the Clipper's Compton's team? They aren't. It's just hollow marketing buzz.

Contrast this with, say, the Chicago White Sox. Who actually play in Chicago's south side.

Those new city uniforms are trash. Looks like those early 2000's fashion jerseys.

I don't know if you've ever played outdoor basketball, but the dudes who try look cool and think they're tough, good ball players, wear this kind of jersey. (Side tangent, anytime you play basketball and see someone wearing an actual jersey of any kind, they are usually the worst players on the court).

So that's the image I get when I see that new Clippers uniform. Amateurs trying to look tough and intimidating.

Hello. No. This is a forum for people to share their opinions on logo and uniform design. So long as someone does this while acting in accordance with our community guidelines? Their opinion is welcome. If you disagree you are free to debate, but please. Do not tell another poster their opinions make them unwelcome. That's not how we do things.

Nike's deluge of alternates sucks because some teams are clearly scraping the bottom of the barrel this season. It's a pretty clear indictment on Nike and the NBA that the best NBA uniform reveals have been throwbacks.

to jump in on the Clippers convo,

those jerseys are atrocious. & I second the user who was stating that they don’t represent anything about the team or the brand & they are definitely trying way too hard. (Btw the Clippers are more like the city Oceanside or Carlsbad than they are anything remotely close to LA)

I will say however, there is a generation of young kids who don’t know about the Lakers success and only know the Clippers being the better team. The Clippers are doing an excellent excellent job doing so much for the city of Los Angeles and the communities, and are essentially raising up a generation of fans for the future, it’s a long-game play the Clippers are doing right now. It’ll be a lotttttttttttttt of work because literally 90% of Los Angeles are Laker fans. The Clipper fans that now exist are previous Laker fans from the past millions of years who jumped shipped when they started losing and “Lob-City” was in effect. Clippers could win back to back titles and LA would still hate the Clippers lol.

to stay on topic with the jerseys.. I admitted to their twitter account that the design with the map of the Los Angeles engraved on their court was very creative, innovative and a great way to represent Los Angeles (something the Lakers probably wouldn’t have done because of tradition).. but the jerseys, don’t represent Los Angeles in any form (unless you want to go gang culture with the Old English font) and if you look at it from those lens, the hood don’t mess with the Clippers, so it’s out of place.

its an “okay” marketing strategy, since these jerseys look more like something you’d find at an inner city swap meet for $20, and the connection of the Los Angeles font, would be something that appeals to the LA masses more than the Clippers logo itself.

and y’all need to stop saying the Lakers are Hollywood.. people who live in Hollywood aren’t from LA, and this it’s a very false narrative and comparison. The real Laker fans are all over the entire city and outskirts of Los Angeles. All this just to say, the Clippers are trash, but I respect what they are doing as an organization within be communities of LA, and trying to really create their own and new identity, and do LA their way. They still have a ton of work to do, and who knows if they’ll get there.

& if you not from LA or live in LA, don’t ever go online anywhere and say the Lakers and Clippers have a rivalry or Clippers will run LA. Please

Part of me also believes that, the Clippers lack of history and success, as well as the Lakers pretty much dominating the Los Angeles fan base, made it hard for the Clippers to come up with ideas on how to “represent” the city. Thus we get this bland ass jersey, with Old English font. The court is so much better, I think that’s the best part about their “city” jersey; having the map on the court.

but everything pertaining to LA, the stars (Hollywood) the beach, the people, every single thing about LA, sad but true, belongs to the Lakers. & if you’re not from LA, you wouldn’t understand.

What on Earth are you babbling about? I never once told him his opinion wasn't valid or open for discussion.. my posts clearly states, that if it's just a matter of opinion on the aesthetics of the uniform, that's no issue, we all have opinions, I CLEARLY stated that. I'm not a Clippers fan , so I couldn't care less about their uniforms. My contention , was that every team has done something with their uniforms that doesn't fully represent who they are. It makes no sense to aggressively call out one team, because at least half the league has had a uniform in the Nike era, that baffles the fan base. You can read my earlier posts if you like. Not once, did I tell him his opinion wasn't welcomed. Nothing more, nothing less. Good day, internet Sheriff.

That's what I'm babbling about. You don't get to engage another poster, drag a conversation out, and then tell them their opinion isn't welcome. Which is what the above quote indicates.

Cute.

It's 2019. Online communities have mods. You should have that figured out.

I think it's good the Clippers and the Nets are bringing in a look that reflects the inner city.  Despite the large fan base in these communities, it's a segment of the population that is largely unrepresented in the NBA (any sport really).  It may not connect with a lot of people and it may viewed as a negative image, but it's a part of reality.  The Nets statement uni made me a fan, maybe this Clippers uniform will bring in some fans as well.  The gear with that Los Angeles logo should sell well at least.

There's an argument that can be made as to whether or not Brooklyn really is the "inner city" anymore, but that can go off topic quickly, so I'll give it to you. Thing is the Nets play in Brooklyn. They're part of that locale.

Again, in what ways are the Clippers LA's "inner city" team? They play in the same building as the Lakers!

I'd argue the "inner city" (BTW, cities are where people are rapidly moving to, rapidly gentrifying typically "inner city" neighborhoods along the way -- see: Oakland as the greatest example but there are more) look is designed to be far more appealing to white dudes who remember Boyz N the Hood rather than black dudes who lived Boyz N the Hood. It's 2019 and the early 90s are in again, whether that's reflected as wearing scrunchies and Birkenstocks or appropriating the most reductive of images of LA culture for fun and profit.

Honestly I personally think we’re all overthinking it. Yea the clippers are using that San Andreas like font but what else indicates that they’re trying too hard? How could they be trying hard if it looked like the designers took a couple of minutes to design the uniforms? All the clippers have been doing are leaning towards more black which is great because they’re balancing out the rwb theme. The new court looks amazing. They made the clippers logo all black on the court because a lot of us hated it for how the colors clashed.
