Maybe Nike will come up with some dumb excuse and say something like "Since these uniforms were worn for only half of a season, they will be featured in exactly half of the 76ers games this season." Just you wait...

I was thinking that this might be the first throwback that’s worn in more games than it’s inspiration was.

They did switch to the black jersey as the full time jersey prior to moving to Memphis.  It was the full time road uniform for the last season in Vancouver in 2000-01.  Small tweak in Vancouver.  The white stripe along the bottom of the short was removed when it became the full time road uni.

What a MAJOR difference that white stripe on the shorts made!

i can't be the only that always hated the use of "Phila"

I definitely don’t prefer shorthand city names on jerseys, but Phila has such a history as the Sixers’ “thing” that I don’t mind it. I actually kinda like it because it feels less forced than many of the other shorthand jerseys (ATL, Motor City, The Land, etc.). Philadelphia is pretty cumbersome on a jersey because of its length, and there’s something charmingly quirky in having shorthand forms on both jerseys (Phila and Sixers).

I still don't have a website, but I have a dribbble now! http://dribbble.com/andyharry

Motor City and The Land aren't short hand for their respective cities, they're nicknames

In my opinion, an abbreviation should only be used if it’s functional to help fit a name, such as “PHILA” and maaaaybe “OKC” (though I’m very borderline on that because the Thunder could just have “OKLAHOMA” over the numbers and “CITY” under them and it’d fit fine). Others like “ATL”, “PHX”, “NOLA”, “BKLYN”, etc. are not functionally necessary and don’t need to be on any uniforms whatsoever. Put abbreviations/shorthand on alternate logos or fashion items if you want to tie into to any local significance, but not on the jersey front. The full city name suffices for those teams just fine.

And I’m hardline on nicknames, I don’t think any of them should be used whatsoever. Trotting out in a uniform that says “Rip City” or “North” among others is almost Brandiose level corny. There’s plenty of other things you can do to help your alternates stand out without having to go that route.

Woah, a lot better than the black. I’m glad Sixers don’t have black jerseys anymore, think that jersey was pretty overrated.

Growing up as a kid in the area at the time, it was interesting because EVERY kid had a blue Iverson jersey, even though they were rarely used. No one opted for the black. Hell, even the kid from Like Mike had the blue one. It's interesting they stuck with black as long as they did

That black jersey the Grizzlies wore when they first moved to Memphis is one of my absolute favorite jerseys of all time. I remember taking the 8th grade trip to Washington DC late spring of 2002 and nearly purchasing a Jason Williams version of that jersey. I didn't though, because I was surrounded by Kings fans and they were in that ill-fated WCF vs the Lakers.

Good times!

It’s ridiculous the Grizzlies didn’t change their name when they moved to Memphis.

They wanted to -- to "Express." David Stern wouldn't allow it. Adam Silver, however, surely would have.

I can't speak for ALT, PHX or NOLA but BKLYN was such a common abbreviation for Brooklyn before the team started using it that I'm totally fine with it on an alternate jersey. The borough's library system uses it and its been used in the subway and on mom and pop shop awnings for literally decades.

If you looked back that far, you could probably find one of the trolleys that residents were dodging that gave the Brooklyn Dodgers their name used "BKLYN". It's just kind of engrained in the place by now.

It's fine especially considering there was the WFL's Memphis Grizzlies in the 70s.

I am fine with PHILA and OKC on full-time jerseys "Association" and "Icon"

I am fine with ATL, PHX, NOLA and BKLYN on alternate jerseys "Statement" and "City"

I am fine with Rip City on the City jerseys.

Other city nicknames are blah, especially NORTH, Motor City and The Land.

I just wish the Grizzlies had gone with an Ancient Egyptian-themed identity upon moving to Memphis (named shared with an important city in Ancient Egypt). We've got Greek and Roman teams, why not Egypt? Put some hieroglyphs on the sides of the court, use turquoise and earth tones, and you'd be set!

Memphis Pharaohs is always at the forefront on this idea...the Arena team in the 90s, plus @mccall's concept here: https://dribbble.com/shots/1588250-Memphis-Pharaohs-UPDATED

I agree the black jersey is underrated. Their identity was evolving similar to Raptors that season, both made changes from the expansion uni set. Always wonder how the fan base and unis would have turned out if they have stayed couple more season when they drafted Shane Battier and Pau Gasol in 2001.
