Leak: Utah Jazz Latest to Throw Back to the 1990s

August 4, 2019 - 15:31 PM

Some say twenty years or so are needed for old fads to become popular again. It makes sense. Those who were young and impressionable at the time of the original trend are now of an age where they actually have […]

This is the curse side to Utah’s alternate and throwback stuff being so popular here; between fans wearing the primary, redrock, and classic gear, we’ve just about got the whole rainbow in the crowd at games. I don’t know that most fans here care, but that identity crisis bugs the crap out of me. Honestly though, the way the NBA uniform landscape is going these days, that may very well wind up as the whole league’s situation.

Doesn’t bother me to be honest. Utah’s 6 jerseys last season was the best slate of anybodies.

Has any team used more primary colors than Utah lol?

Are you counting alternate jerseys and special editions as primary colors? Their primary colors have always been purple or navy blue, accent colors have varied a bit

Oh I mean primary color of the uniform, so yes. Cavs must be close.

It’s really disappointing what’s going on with utahs brand right now. While I don’t think they have made a particularly bad jersey, the jerseys they unveiled with the rebranding back in 16-17 (under adidas I might add) was perfect, the sleeved jersey wasn’t the best but the whole set itself was gorgeous, especially that green alt that needs to come back asap

The stuff they have now, except for the red rock jersey, is nearly identical. Even the statement and earned editions had the same base design, just different word marks/logos on the chest.

The brand is still the "Utah Jazz"... Jazz team from New Orleans in the middle of Utah.

Now read that out loud. They will always be mainly the Jazz. Whatever the era, city or uniform, they are still the Jazz.

Different eras have different identities no matter the uniform. Bulls during the 2000s (pre Derrick Rose) sucked. Even though they had the same uniform, i never identify the era off the uniforms but who was there & how they played.

Bulls like the Jazz or Lebron-era Heat (50 something alternates) still have a strong identity. People chill.

Even though I respectfully dislike the Jazz brand (no surprise) I do really like their unis. I love those sharp lines on the sides. They’re clean but also very bold. The colors they have now are a unique combo. Come at me bros

The current Jazz identity is nice. I would prefer it if the navy were a bit lighter but it's fine.

The Jazz have some of the best alternates (City sunset) and throwbacks (NBA Finals Mountain era set AND the purple New Orleans era set) in the entire NBA. Their primary set is about as underwhelming as it possibly gets, though. They're not really bad by any stretch, but they're just so terribly uninspired and kind of safe and boring. I'd take any combo of their alternates and throwbacks they have over what they currently wear. That's why I loved that gradient mountain prototype/custom/mockup jersey so much.

From what I seen people say on reddit it just comes off as weird, some people say it’s offensive (I don’t think that way but I won’t be happy about it either) There was a whole post that blew up on that game day.

its an odd thing to say but the colors purple green and gold are very cultural. Cultural as it can get for an nba team to wear. It’s a color combination that New Orleans has bled for generations. As kids we were taught in school what the colors meant and we celebrated it. (Not to make it sound religious which for most people it’s really not). If you go to New Orleans you would see purple green and gold everywhere. Painted on peoples stairs, banners, street art, etc. So to see another nba team that wears it can anger some nola fans.

As for me I can totally understand throwbacks for the jazz since it makes sense those are their uniforms from the past. But if the jazz were to ever go full time with them it would come off as very weird. Kinda like how people say that a team going full time with an alternative would be too much.

I can see that. But, and maybe this is why purple was retained with the mountain logo, when I think of Utah -- I think of mountains -- and when I think of mountains -- I think of purple mountains majesty. I don't associate navy with it as much.

I would also laugh if they're just trolling everyone and unveil the epitome of black for black sake 1998 alternate jerseys

Ah, my earliest memory of an alternate getting real weird and breaking the usual team colors and everything.

Still think black/copper/a little purple is a hell of a color scheme.

And for that reason I think the core Jazz set is still good, but there are a couple of key downgrades -- chiefly that the current gold note logo jersey is a major downgrade from that nice green alternate. And sleeves aside, the old stripey alternate was a better take on the avant-garde of uniform design.

I've thought for years that the current navy just needs to be nudged a little bit toward a purple hue. It's almost there as it is in the right lighting. But a dark indigo/purple would be the perfect modernization.
