Dolphins Back in Throwbacks With New Endzone This Weekend

December 21, 2018 - 15:41 PM

The Miami Dolphins heard you. Following the rousing popularity of the Dolphins wearing their throwback uniforms for back-to-back games earlier this month, the team has requested and received permission from the National Football League to wear them for this weekend’s […]

I just don’t get why they can’t scrap their current identity and just commit full time to these. As a lifelong Dolphins fan I have barely followed them since the rebrand. I just can’t get into them in this set.

I think (at least some in) the Dolphins organization likes to double-dip the way it is now...throwbacks for fans who prefer those, and a modern uniform for the rest. Maximizes their marketability.

Just what the Brewers do.  I :censored:ing hate it.

Our Dolphins guy (BrandMooreArt, I think?) has said a few times that the team is aiming for a certain level of seriousness in their brand and have been trying to move away from the cartoonish nature of the old brand. I get the logic, I guess, but it’s never made any real sense to me. It seems like a really dumb idea because their old brand was sorta goofy in a good, almost whimsical way, and their new set looks like an advertisement for generic-branded toothpaste. The Dolphins went from kinda bad but fun because of their look, to just kinda bad and totally forgettable because they have such a generic, lifeless look now.

Yes that’s the message he conveys.  Personally I’ve never thought of any pre 97 dolphin identity as cartoonish.   The 97 revamp was very 90s in the way that they detailed the logo and darkened the aqua.  However going to an identity that dates back to the AFL is absolutely serious and classic.  The one thing you don’t have much of in pro sports in Florida are classic brands that are steeped in history. The dolphins have it, and it looks good.

People love it.  Some people are accepting of both identities.  I don’t see anyone defending the current identity while claiming it to be a significant upgrade

The article says it asked and received permission to wear the throwbacks. I don't know the answer to this but if they were over the limit to wear the throwbacks, if they were, the league shouldn't give them permission. Most of what I've seen on this board hate the white Ram"s version they have to roll out because of this rule, so that's not really fair because the Rams could've worn their throwbacks more. I actually have no problem with the new Dolphins set(they tweeked it to make it even look better this year by removing the three color trim on the numbers) although the throwbacks are beautiful.

I think the Rams actually asked for and were granted permission to wear the throwbacks more often this season, too.

The Rams were given permission to designate the throwbacks as their primary home uniform for this season. Any home games not in them are directly their own fault and not the leagues.

Another thing about the older dolphins designs is that the sleeve stripes actually look better on the modern uniform construction.  In their original incarnation the stripes were a little overpowering.  You can see some photos where Marino cut his sleeves halfway up the stripes and it looks much better.

The team adopted that thinner stripe pattern in 87 when they moved into Joe Robbie Stadium.  The thicker stripes though don’t have the same impact on the modern tight fit and they look really good IMO.

Helmet varieties were a 1973 phenomenon

Yes, which only started with the next-to-last regular season game in Baltimore...most lineman and linebackers switched to the "out of the sun" logo, which became the official logo in 1974.

If that's the case then why did the Rams wear those terrible whites at home in the 2nd and 3rd week? I want uniform rules, even if it means seeing a bad uniform(as mentioned week 2 and 3), I don't want this league to turn into the NBA.

I kinda agree with you but atleast both the throwbacks and the current uniforms are nearly the same color. So the Dolphins can get away with this. The problem with the Brewers is that their looks are completely different (royal/yellow and navy/gold) and then they started to combine them (navy/yellow) which makes it even worse.
