Double Goodell items today.

#1: http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/26887324/four-preseason-games-not-necessary

Quote

The NFL commissioner on Monday reiterated his stance of wanting to reduce the preseason schedule at a time when the league and players' association have begun preliminary talks on a new collective bargaining agreement.

"I feel what we should be doing is always to the highest quality, and I'm not sure preseason games meet that level right now," Goodell said, while participating in Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly's 33rd charity golf tournament outside of Buffalo, New York.

"I'm not sure, talking with coaches, that four preseason games is necessary anymore to get ready for a season to evaluate players, develop players," he added. "There are other ways of doing that, and we've had a lot of discussions about that."

Boston is a pretty congested city, I can't think of many areas they could hold it outdoors (Boston Common I guess?)  Unless they want to go with TD Garden, or the Convention Center.

Hatch Shell or the Rockland Trust Bank Pavilion. Book it.

It feels like the Bills will be out of Buffalo within a decade, right? If Jacksonville doesn't make it to London first, the Bills totally seem a likely candidate.

The Bills just did a major renovation of their stadium, so this feels like one of those Seattle SuperSonics situations.

The Kahn’s aren’t moving the Jags, and the Bills aren’t moving either. The Kahn’s have put so much money into the stadium, and are transforming the area around the stadium saying they are gonna be there for a long long time. The bills are a founding member of the AFL, they have been there for 60 years. The stadium is old and small but there is nothing indicating they are anywhere close to being in a relocation situation.

I thought this was really just standard mouth-moving-but-nothing-coming-out corporate speak. The stadium process has been admittedly strange, but I don't think there's anything wrong yet. I think this was just Goodell back home for a charity golf tournament, and he had to say something because he was asked. If he wanted to threaten, he could do that any day of the week. There's also the possibility of poisoning the well for the Pegulas' other investments in the area if the Bills are allowed to move... Sabres, Bandits, Harborcenter, etc.

#1. Looks like he wants 18 game regular season and this is his way of saying it, without saying it.

I'd say go with 2 preseason games and 18 regular season games. Have week 1 be the last week of August.

The first and fourth preseason games always seem somewhat pointless. Only drawback is that a lot of guys are going to be cut without getting a proper opportunity. This is where the need for a secondary league AAF/XFL is important.

NFL should NOT start before Labor Day, or it’d need a bye week on LD weekend.  That it rig the schedule so all the games are in land-locked places or where the population doesn’t migrate on that weekend.

18 games is too much. I think 16 might even be too much, but we’re conditioned to the numbers that correspond to it (9-7, 8-8, 10-6, etc).

I dont know the right number, but I’d assume that you could quantify how much each game contributes to injuries, so you could actually state the benefit of playing one or two fewer games.

I still hold to the belief I espoused on the Pointless Reel Line Mint thread a long time ago, and that is this: in my ideal world, the NFL would have a three-game preseason, and fifteen-game regular season, broken up into thirds. The postseason remains unchanged. (This would also constitute 18 games total not counting postseason, which for a sport as violent as football is more than enough.)

Three games, I believe, is enough to evaluate and make cuts. The regular season can be broken up into thirds of five games per segment, with two bye periods at weeks six and twelve--that would still give you your 17-week regular season, but a/ gives players more rest during the season, and b/ eliminates the potentially unfair scenario of some teams having bye weeks at like week four and some at week nine--it basically evens the playing field as much as possible as far as byes are concerned. (Or, if that's too crazy, half the teams can go on bye at week eight, half at week nine, alternating each year.)

But that's just my two copper coins on the conversation...

How would an 18-game schedule even work? You would probably have to schedule at least two BYE weeks for every team, which means we'd be looking at a 20-week schedule, plus the playoffs, that runs through mid-to-late February? Does Goodell want to move up Week 1 to late August? That's just too much. I know that Goodell's job is to look for more revenue, but I just don't see the players ever agreeing to that. Not to mention the fact that nobody wants to watch the Bills or the Bucs play another two games a year, that's just torture.

Two bye weeks sounds awesome to me. That or a commitment to ALWAYS provide a bye week prior to Thursday night games (that this isn't guaranteed is insane to me).

They did. They expanded suite capacity in 1998 and did a whole bunch of other renovations -- video boards, a new team store, new gates -- since 2012.

Because Goodell is the mouthpiece for the owners and they have a new city to shake down now that this current spate of relocations is over. Buffalo is on the menu and they love their Bills. They'd agree to almost anything to save their team. Goodell's logic, anyway.
