This is a general FYI.

During the CFP, ESPN aired promotions for the 150th Anniversary of College Football.  ESPN has their own dedicated mini-site too.

ESPN also will have hours of programming specific to the anniversary: audio, video, and written with a docu-series to debut in September. There will be 150 days of programming with SEC Network specific content too.

This week's AP Top 25 Podcast had AP national NCAA writer and host Ralph Russo talk with ESPN's Ivan Maisel* about the project and Maisel discusses the origins and his role as basically the "historian" of the project. Maisel will also teach a Continuing Studies class on the History of Colege Football at his alma mater, Stanford, this winter.

*-In 2015, Maisel's son, Max, was a Junior at the Rochester Insititute of Technology when he committed suicide.  Maisel talked about how long he's been working on this so it's clear that he dove into his work as a manner to cope with his loss.

NCAA may adjust OT rules to avoid 7OT games like LSU/Texas A&M

Concerned about increased injury risk to players, the football rules committee later this month will consider tweaks to the overtime format. The goal is to make it less likely for games to go beyond two extra possessions for each team.

There is no support to allow games to end in ties, which were part of college football for decades.

Shaw said he has received dozens of ideas about how to tweak overtime. The most common have to do with placement of the ball. With offenses operating more efficiently than ever, moving the starting line back 10 or 15 yards could make scoring more difficult. The rules committee will also consider eliminating extra point tries, forcing teams to go for 2 from the very first possession.

Shaw said eliminating all place kicking in overtime will also be discussed. This could help address a less important issue: the team that wins the coin toss for overtime usually wins the game. Typically, the team that wins the toss chooses to play defense first so it knows what it will take to win when it has the ball.

Recently, on average only 37 games got to OT with just six of those going to a 2nd OT.

Is Missouri getting their penalties plus the penalties UNC should have received tacked on?  That seems incredibly harsh for a rogue tutor doing a couple players' coursework, especially with UNC getting nothing. Missouri even self-reported it, cooperated, and suspended the players when they found out.

Lesson of this story is: Fight back, do not cooperate and lawyer up.

Here's the Missouri AD today:

Quote

“It is hard to fathom that the university could be cited for exemplary cooperation throughout this case, and yet end up with these unprecedented penalties that could unfairly and adversely impact innocent current and future Mizzou student-athletes,”

Also, never self-report. Cover everything up and deny, deny, deny.

Never self-report too much. Self-reporting is part of the NCAA game. Just don't report something quite so bad. You self-report when it's something like a player or two's progress towards their major was misreported and lose a scholarship or two (if that) and get on with your life.

Malone University has cut football. The team had been pretty bad for years and the school needed to cut $2.5 million dollars in debt while building a new athletics complex that had included a practice field for football. It's supposed to save $1 million dollars a year. I'm pretty upset but I understand it's better to cut football than raise tuition. It's $29,000 just for one semester before adding room, board and books.

Or, like Texas A&M/LSU, the refs could just make the correct call at least ONCE, instead of messing up (or not making calls) a half dozen times.

It is what it is.

FSU QB Deondre Francios dismissed from the program after domestic violence allegation and a video surfaced over the weekend.

24 hours later the woman recants story, but family members claim her Instagram was hacked and the post in question was deleted.

In coaching news...Pep Hamilton and Michigan will part ways as they need to cut down their number of official assistant coaches to ten.

And Art Briles has interviewed not for a job in Hell as Stugotz would report, but rather for the OC job at Southern Miss.

I feel like Art Briles should not be allowed near any college program after the amount of shenanigans that occurred at Baylor. When your response to a victim coming forward is, "Doesn't she know they're bad guys"? that's proof enough you've sold your soul for a few extra wins a year.

Southern Miss has announced that Briles is not a candidate anymore. You’re up, Liberty!

After reading this, I'm not sure if Jay Hopson is meant to be at Southern Miss after the 2019 season, but apparently, there was booster support (of course) backing the Briles hire.

And USM is searching for their third athletic director since 2017

An interim athletic director should never be asked to make that call. Hopson may have wanted that offense brought to Hattiesburg just hire a Briles disciple. People may still talk but you won't have half the country on your case.

The NCAA has a long and storied history of unevenly applying punishment.

There was an incident a number of years ago involving Nebraska Heisman winner Eric Crouch.  Crouch was on the campaign trail with a friend who was running for office (this was allowed), but he got in hot water for eating a ham sandwich ($4 value) and taking a ride on the campaign's chartered airplane to fly about 100 miles from Lincoln to Hastings, NE (valued at $13).  Nevermind that the plane was already chartered and paid for.  Somehow the NCAA determined Crouch received thirteen bucks' worth of illegal air travel.

Of course the NCAA and university had to crack down on that s**t immediately after receiving an anonymous tip.  Crouch paid something like $25 of restitution, which included the $17 worth of free stuff AND A FINE of about 8 bucks.

Meanwhile, other schools provide drugs, hookers and doctored test scores to student athletes and the NCAA looks the other way.
