Twins' new alternate uniform

Recommended Posts

I just don't understand how you screw up the word Twins.  There are so many ways you can make a script/calligraphic T and blend it gracefully into the swooping curls of "wins."  Yet this thing took all of 15 minutes and some brass who has no aesthetic ability beyond announcing the annual chili cook off posters in Print Shop Pro signed off on it.

I don’t understand gold. Where did that come from? Maybe they wanted to sperate themselves from Cleveland who have the same colors but it’s not like they wear the same uniforms. Gold is not aesthetically pleasing with navy and red.

While it probably was done to differentiate them from Cleveland it comes from the gold color seen all over Target Field including along the backstop. The color was used in logos for the 2014 ASG in Minnesota and they got the idea from that. They call the color Kasota Gold and it comes from some local limestone mineral or something that is that color so at least they have a purpose or a reason for using it and it's not just a random color. For that reason I like it in small doses. I think it has to be applied right though and this new jersey ruins it. Here's an image where you can see the gold along the backstop and also the wall behind the seats separating the lower level from the level above it.

When did the Twins become such a disjointed mess?  This new wordmark is awful.  The shoehorning of gold is awful.  They look AWFUL!!!

There is no reason to not come up with a modern script that matches the "Minnesota" wordmark beautifully.  the "Twins" on the blue alt is like a drunk tried to write "Twins" and forgot how cursive works.

Justifying adding gold because "the ballpark has it" is just a horrid decision. It would be like the Red Sox adding Green to the RWB because Fenway has green walls.

Awful awful awful! And they looked so much better when they opened up Target Field.  What the hell happened?

The gold only on the homes is real bad and I really don't like colours coming and going depending on home or away. If it was on both the home and the road I could stomach it a bit more, but it's still not a good look.

My all-time favourite Twins look is still the pinstriped Metrodome set and I really like the old M hat.

The thing is, I think the Twins got the gold right the first time. The shade of "Kasota Gold" they used for the All-Star Game is noticeably lighter and less saturated than the shade they opted for in 2015, and the original shade to me much better matches the limestone seen in and around the stadium.

As you can see with the original Home Run Derby uniforms, the gold was pretty distinguishable from the red, giving potential for a unique red & navy identity:

But now the red & gold colors just sort of blend on the home uniforms to create this weird, burnt orange-y color:

The gold they have now is way too saturated. I think if the Twins stuck with the lighter gold, or even just made the base of the home uniform cream without any shadows, they would have a much better look overall.

Good points above about the ASG gold matching the limestone better and integrating better with the RWB. The cream throwbacks against the limestone probably also contributed to how good they looked at Target Field.

Edit:

And look how much better the ASG gold looks even if you don't change the script at all.

More by President Dave St. Peter. So it might come back again, and he's questioning himself now.

If I had to guess, the 1973-86 Powder Blues might come back as an Alt in the coming years if the Creams don't return. They are really popular with Twins Territory.

I don’t necessarily mind the Twins adding gold. It’s a bit of a weird direction, but I think they kind of fell in love with their 2014 All Star Game logo package and want to use that to separate this particular era. I get that. But I absolutey HATE the way they’re doing it. The gold is almost invisible in some applications, and absolutey forced in other applications. Clean it up and I could live with a red/navy/tan/white Twins look.

I was told powder blue is returning in 2020, at this point that's just a band-aid on this mess of an identity.

Hadn't heard that -- what was the possibility, as an alternate jersey, an alternate Cardinals-style road uniform, or the full-time road uni?

Probably being implied for next year in this tweet from the Team President when he says "Guessing those and other “throwback” unis will again be featured in the future."

This sums it up for me. I think the idea of the gold for the Twins is underrated but the execution isn't working.

And that tweet from the team president makes it sound like they'll wait 39 years before the cream unis return lol.

Those cream unis are one of my favorites in all of baseball, and I've always wanted the Twins to return to them. I suspect that if the Twins started wearing them full-time, especially with a cleaned-up script, they'd immediately be considered near-untouchable. Much like how the White Sox and Blue Jays landed on near-untouchable looks after decades of different uniforms.

I honestly have no clue what the Twins are going for with their branding right now. They've spent over 50 years as a red, white, and blue team - over a century in those colors if you include their time in Washington - and now after 5 decades they're suddenly trying to become a blue/red/gold team (with blue definitely taking the lead for the first time ever in Minnesota)? With a gold that doesn't even mesh well with their existing color scheme? And after wearing pinstripes for the better part of 5 decades, they ditch the pinstripes out of nowhere?

The Twins have undergone a lot of visual changes over the years, but there was always some degree of visual continuity from the Met Stadium look to the Metrodome look to the early Target Field years. The Metrodome was a visual evolution from the classic Met Stadium look (i.e. the beautiful jersey they just ditched), and the initial Target Field look was an amalgam of the two. But now? They look like a different franchise. There's nothing recognizably 'Twins' about this look.

I think somebody got a little too enamored with the gold trim in their All-Star Game identity, and took it way too far...

If I had to guess, they would have already changed logos if it wasn’t for the Giants LED Logo at Target Field...

The Orioles still have their last two logos up around Camden Yards, including on the scoreboard.  I doubt the Twins are being held back by this one, no matter how prominent it is.

. . . and an old NL Orioles logo at the end of every row of seats.

Is that a real historical logo?  I always thought it was just intended to be old-timey, like the ballpark itself.

The two pieces of information I knew where 1) powder blue is/was returning as an alternate option and 2) they are going to have a "blue" alternate jersey this year. Now, I took that to mean those were one in the same, but evidently that isn't the case.

Totally! It’s the perfect evolution of what they were doing as the Sens/Nats (navy first, with accents of red). A cleaned-up script with that base of creme pinstripes (for the stadium - more subtle than gold) and the current road script with a proper tail would be fab.

I’d argue that their pre-doubleknit and Washington designs were fairly navy-based, with many not featuring red.

I don’t get the adoption of gold. Maybe the shock of the mid-late ‘00s window closing brutally shook up the front office, and now they’re determined to throw crap at a wall to see what sticks?

I would rather that they have purged the Metrodome-era color balance and wordmarks. Too much red brings them a bit close to Cleveland & Boston.

It’d be a decent Nationals design, had they kept gold after 2010, weaving it into the script set.

I’d argee. It was an effort at a shake-up, based on one of the few highlights of Twins baseball from the past few years.

This team needs a focused, thorough redesign. They haven’t really had one since 1987.

Thanks. I think the Sens’-style tail would be a fantastic addition:

It’d be a bit of uniqueness without being corny (like the “win” underline).

Flip the red and blue on the script and add pinstripes and you have a beautiful Twins identity that maintains their history while being modern.

There's a reason the Metrodome era look is so beloved here, we won 2 World Series in that look and those are the last titles the state has won in any of the major 4 sports.
