Nike Officially Announced as MLB On-Field Uniform Provider

The swoosh - in addition to any tinkering with templates - is clearly the biggest issue here.

Let's just look at two teams: 2008 World Series Champion Philadelphia Phillies and the Yankees.

If the swoosh is on the right, then it'll be immediately over the Phillies large P which would infringe on its territory, and it'll be in the blank space on the Yankees, and basically be a second logo for the team.

If it's on the left, then it "balances" the Phillies script, and essentially becomes part of it, and same with the Yankees - like when those dopes used to put crosses in the middle of the Y on their caps, but with a swoosh instead of a cross.

NFL held firm on their logo rules, and while Nike has pushed it to the absolute limit as far as size and integration goes (a point I've made a thosand times and don't need to here), the overall look for most of the teams is as they've always been.  I wish MLB was strong enough to do the same.  Hell - I'd even be willing to accept two swooshes - one on each sleeve - just like NFL if it would keep them off the front.

Random thoughts:

- The Nike Swoosh (likely front chest) and the New Era flag (left side of caps) will clash. Not looking forward to seeing maker’s marks from two different companies competing for my eye.

- I’m guessing Nike will create a new template for MLB. Subtly different than Majestic, but noticeable.

- Will pullovers be an option?

Majestic and New Era both show their logos now, no? What would be the difference with a swoosh?

I'm more pissed about the fantatics branded fan apparel. Their stuff sucks.

Can't wait for that majestic/nike/ua clearance sale.

Their hats are particularly really terrible.  As much grief as people have been giving New Era over their China/Vietnam/polyester hats they’re still a better hat than anything Fanatics has made.  Fanatics has a giant share of the NHL hat selections and none of them are good.  I can deal with this for hockey but baseball....you need halfway decent baseball hat options.

I don’t understand why this is so hard to grasp: Nike doesn’t have full control over the designs of the leagues they have contracts with. They have their influence, but in the end it’s a team decision

Nobody actually disputes that.

But part of Nike’s business is to talk teams into new designs that promote Nike’s brand.  And they’re very, very, very good at that.

Now, that doesn’t absolve the teams of responsibility for yielding to the manufacturers. Not at all.  But neither is Nike blameless in the equation.

A swoosh on the front of jerseys is more invasive than the present locations of the Majestic and New Era logos.

Any logo is more invasive on the front of the jerseys.  Which is why Under Armour paid for that, and why Nike will as well.

I think New Era at least still has the both the on field and fan hats for a while, thankfully.

New Era for now, but it feels like the next mountain for Nike to climb.

A few years ago, I would have been ok with that. Nike college baseball caps were really nice, but now everything has venting and looks horrible.

New era been in the league for so long, its part of the history of league. Be hard to see them go

In the grand scheme, nobody cares who makes the hats. If not for a logo that didn’t appear until last season, most people wouldn’t know the difference

Not anymore considering all of their production has been shipped overseas. The MUSA caps were fantastic, even if a bit inconsistent. The current run of imported caps are all trash. NFL caps included (actually, these are probably the very worst example).

And on top of the things we worry about, i think there is one thing we are forgetting, will Nike be able to  create the correct jersey colors for all teams. Not only team colors, what about the different shades of gray?!

The NBA's Lakers went from Purple and Gold to Purple and Banana Peel!
