Just because Arizona has some red rocks and some beige deserts doesn’t mean every sports team has to share that color scheme. If that’s the prevailing rationale then most teams ought to have forest green and dirt brown color schemes.

I've also thought that the Diamondbacks could do the Suns' purple/orange or purple/orange/black pretty well.

 

Heck, purple/orange is really underused. Maybe the Coyotes could look good with it, since we're so eager to have a purple team in the NHL's color palette.

Has there ever been a franchise that ended up going back to a uniform/logo design that was previously worn by the team?  You can "sorta" count the Brewers going back to the BiG, but I mean like a team saying "screw it, let's go back to our throwbacks full-time."

It’s also cool because the purple and teal is a nice contrast to the surroundings almost like an oasis from it. The Sonoran desert really isn’t something you should aspire to blend into.

NewEraCap.com did put out the caps for Jackie Robinson Day.  Interesting bit is the patch on the side included the team specific numbers for 42.

Mets are probably one of the closest. They essentially are wearing their 1960s unis after racing stripes in the 80s, scripts with tails in the 90s, and bfbs looks in the 90s/2000s. 

 

Pirates sort of went with a throwback look full time in the early 2000s;

My Diamondbacks thought is that they won a World Series in four years in beautiful threads that were unmistakably them. You shouldn’t ditch your colors entirely five years later after winning a title, particularly not when it was to play then-Astros dress-up.

The '87 Braves went, if not completely back to the Milwaukee Braves set, pretty darn close after 20ish years of experiments that never took. The Mets, I guess.

And against the dynasty Yankees in tone of the greatest World Series ever played. They could have used that same identity for 100 years.

 

They should get way more criticism for what they did.

the New York football Giants comes to mind along with what was said previously. The Orioles and Phillies if you want to make the case for it, same goes (sorta-ish-kinda-maybe) for the White Sox. Admittedly, the logos and wordmarks for those baseball teams are updated for aesthetic purposes, but none of those destroy the original look. Plus laypeople call them throwbacks

There are lots of cases of teams modernizing old looks, but as far as going saying screw it and just using the old look 1:1, I cant think of any.

The Islanders went back to their originals 1:1 after spending years in a navy jersey, then there's the Penguins and Oilers just going back to their championship looks. The Sabres will (seemingly) also be doing it next season.

 

It's happened before. Different leagues, but it has happened before.

And now the Bucs are doing it in the NFL. Surprising that there aren't more cases in baseball. 

 

Current Astros is certainly close to it, at least on the away uniforms, but there are just enough updates to be "modern". 

 

Can't really decide how I feel about the Astros look ... on the one hand, I think the star H is one of my favorite cap logos in baseball, and it contributes to a very Texan feel. The Rangers should have beaten them to it, but they didn't, so it works as a really nice connector between yee-haw Wild West Texas and NASA rocket Houston. But the old-timey wordmarks don't work in that look or that color scheme.

The Rangers had that badge sleeve logo for years, but they ditched that for the Texas flag which is a downgrade.

That brick-and-black Astros set was a stark example of a franchise confused by its own brand. 

 

A franchise that started out with an Old West theme (Colt .45s) switches to a Space Age them (Astros) and 30 years later adopts uniforms that try to accomplish both at once. There aren't many visual themes that are more different from one another than the Old West and Space.

Houston isn't the Southwest, though, it's the westernmost point of the Southeast. It's more like New Orleans than Albuquerque.

I'd say New Orleans would be the furthest west portion of the Southeast, specifically because all of Texas falls under the Southwest geographically. Granted Texas doesn't even like to be considered to part of anything other than itself in most things. A&M peeps won't even consider themselves part of the Southeast even though they are members of the SEC.
