Alouettes Kick-Off New Era With Revamped Logo, Uniforms

I'm not surprised by negative comments read here, I am a traditionalist but like things that get out of the box.

Of course they could have put logos on each side of the helmets. That would have been a clean look, and nobody would be sort of against, saying that thing is OK but not more.

Probably, nobody would be posting about the Als new look here.

What did the Als last nite?

Since 7 to 8 years, they are struggling to make playoffs, getting less people in the stands, but the team founded 1946 at least, the original version, always tried to come up with new ideas.

1974, heck, they putted the triangle delta logo on the front of the helmets à la baseball hat, instead of sides. Never seen that for any football team else where.

The logo had to be both modern and retro. IMHO, the logo is almost the perfect mix between old and new. It has even a very designer touch that makes it now pop and stand as something unique, at least, at this time, I dont recall another logo that is at the same time simple and complex.

Yes, its still designed around a letter (M), but, its not a letter with things around.

Yes its use on the helmets is totally out of the box. So what?

Either you want to be noticed, or you want to be ignored. Sometimes, you got noticed for bad reasons, sometimes for good reasons. Many dont like? Fine, they are stating it, thats great, they are talking about the CFL. We are FAR FAR FAR away from the BC Lions look here.

But certainly, the single fact we are posting about the logo position on the helmets, here, I mean, its a canadian pro football team right? They scored IMHO.

And NO, its nothing close to the Jags golden and black grade helmet total mess.

Unis are plain? Maybe, but honestly, I like em 1000 times more then the patchwork they used since 18 years.

They scored, they will reach their goal, bringing in more people in the stadium, because the design totally screams Montreal. Heck, I'm ordering a t-shirt.

Congrats Alouettes!

At least they abandoned the prototype's dark red numbers on dark blue jersey. Overall, the look is far superior to what they've had for the past decade or so, and thankfully the cartoon bird is now history. Unfortunately, this new look would be 100 times better had they just swapped monochrome for jersey/pants contrast. When will that execrable trend come to an end?

The CFL usually change the combos thgoughout the season. Dont be surprise they mix Jerseys and pants at some point next summer

What? Was this originally in French and just run through google translate?

Montreal is bilingual to the extreme, to the point where this kind of casual mixing of English and French makes perfect sense to someone from there. Again, this identity is all about Montreal, even someone from Toronto or Quebec City would probably find it a bit weird.

BTW I'm a bit slow but I just noticed that the helmet subtly features the old team logos. That's a nice touch.

Anyway, clever logo, it's an M, it's a lark, it's kind of a fleur-de-lis sorta if you will it into being one. I would have liked a lighter blue than midnight blue, something closer to the Quebec flag, but I guess it's fine enough. I don't pay any attention to the CFL anyway.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

Did they plan this for a long time or did they just do it on a lark?

Planned for sure. That’s why they used all the old historical helmets last year. It was a nod to what was coming.

Honestly, I like this look a lot. Outside of the logo placement on the helmet. That’s only because there’s no real good angle to see the whole thing.

I like the colours, I like the logo (i never liked the old cartoony logo).

Except the Argos did not change combos very often in 2018. I tracked them game by game the past two seasons. They used 10 separate combinations in 2017, including many with contrast and even some with Cambridge blue upper socks. This past year they went white/white and blue/blue for the vast majority of the games.

Here is what they did in 2017 (B=Oxford Blue, C=Cambridge Blue, W=White, Comb=how many times they used that combo):

Helmet Jersey Pants Socks Comb
B B B O 4
W W W W 4
B W B O 3
W B B W 2
W B W O 2
W B W W 2
W W W C 2
B W B W 1
W B W C 1
W W B O 1

Six of the 10 combos, total of 10 out of 22 games (including preseason), had contrasting pants and jerseys.

Congrats Alouettes!

Put me on record as liking the helmet, even moreso since @GFB posted that 360° gif that shows the front-facing "M" reminiscent of the Concordes.

But this look is Christopher Reeve. Dead from the neck down.

For all the bird de lis haters I think the bird de lis isnt supposed to be a pelican and a fleur de lis I think its just a fleur de lis with a pelicans head. Thats what it looks like to me. Also the flair around the tip of the beak is just flair that fleur de lis have sometimes source I am from NOLA.

This is really really fascinating- it looks like a modern branding firm approached a sports team as if they were a just another corporate job, completely avoiding a lot of the traditional approaches we are accustomed to seeing in sports design. I have to say that I really dig it, and think it works really well for a city like Montreal.

I do agree, this couldnt work for other places.

The logo and the helmet are very good. So unconventional, but I think it works, I even like the previous logos on the side. Maybe a blue facemask would have been better through. The uniforms I'm not a fan of, should have kept the tricolor in some way. Make the stripe white and the sleeve red and it's perfect

I’m not sure if this is an unpopular opinion or not (probably), but I actually really liked their previous look. It wasn’t perfect, but it was solid enough and at least somewhat unique.

It’s not common to see a team brand designed with this type of approach. Take away the helmet, pennant, and other sports paraphernalia, and this could be a store, a fashion label, a restaurant/bar, an agency, etc. They might not be the first team to approach branding like this, but they might be the first to go all in on it, and I think there is a lot of success here. The uniforms are the most underwhelming piece compared to the rest of the work. I’m admittedly sad to see the iconic blue-white-red jersey design go away, but the brand extensions and the helmet are, in my opinion, the pieces that are going to live on and challenge the status quo of team branding into the future. The helmet, in particular, is really interesting in the way it gives you such a unique look from different angles (wings from the side, M from the front), while the logo itself straddles a nice line between monogram and bird. I hope they eventually get the perfect threads to complement the rest, but I’ve gotta hand it to the people who worked on this one; you’ve got the building blocks of something special here.

I still don't have a website, but I have a dribbble now! http://dribbble.com/andyharry

I thought they were a better pants stripe and ditching the side panel from being really good. Probably should have ditched the silver too. But the yoke+UCLA stripe was cool
