Message Board Influence

Recommended Posts

Has anyone ever let CCSLC influence their thoughts on a logo or uniform? For example, you were neutral but positive comments warmed you to the idea of a logo/uniform or you were a contrarian and didn't like it because everyone else did?

I only ask because I, for years, refused to acknowledge how much better Pitt's script and blue/yellow color scheme is compared to the block Pitt and navy/Vegas gold color scheme. I've since come around, and believe they need to return to the retro look full-time. In hindsight, though, I think I just held onto that idea because 1. Those were Pitt's colors when I first realized the school existed (and associate them with Larry Fitzgerald), and 2. Because everyone in this board — and, well, everyone on the internet — prefers retro Pitt. I guess you could say the same thing about the St. Louis Rams vs the Los Angeles Rams, too.

Does anyone else have any similar stories, or ones where you didn't really care for a logo/uniform until you saw the praise it received? Please share!

FTR I’ve hated Pitt in Navy/Vegas.

I dont think I’ve been influenced by anyone. I’ve always had an open mind and have warmed to things over time or because I liked a player.

I will also throwdown with anyone here who suggest a face mask is equipment and not part of the uniform. Fight me you gray face mask lovers!!!!!

Well, I like the gold-pantsed St Louis Rams, so I guess I'm weird.

The board never influences my opinion in the way you mentioned, HOWEVER often times people can point out that some element of a logo that I originally didn't understand is actually a historical tie-in to something in that team's or city's history, and that may make me appreciate it more, but no amount of "needs stripes" is going to change my mind if I don't think  a uniform "needs stripes".

I don't mind the blue and yellow.  But this ^^^ is a very underrated, very clean look.  As a WVU fan I've been programmed to be anti-Pitt, and I am.  But I can acknowledge that this uniform could go toe to toe with any in the country.

To answer your question though, I don't think the boards have really swayed my opinions.  I like what I like.  And as BBTV mentioned maybe sometimes someone can draw your attention towards some element you could appreciate more, but overall its just the eye test for me.  I will say, I think at this point most of us have a good feel for what will and won't be liked around here whenever a logo or uniform gets unveiled, maybe there is a bias that comes into play.  For example, maybe an NHL team might unveil a garish alternate that you like, but you know it'll get ripped around here, so you tell yourself it stinks. I guess that's possible

it depends. sometimes i will be willing to look at things differently, especially depending on who's commenting (like someone with obvious design experience or whose tastes i seem to share). like, my knee-jerk reaction might be that it isn't my taste, but then i learn to appreciate certain design elements, and maybe the look grows on me. as an example, someone just said the other day that the marlins brand refresh has really grown on him, and i was thought, "ya know, i can definitely see that. it's not as bad as i wrote it off being back in november"

the only comments i really dismiss out of hand about uniform design is the purely negative (and usually) hyperbolic ones. like, "worst design ever." or "these are trash." admittedly, those are relatively rare among the commenters whose opinions i value. and i tend to reserve judgement on a look until i see it on the field/ice.

It’s funny you mention this, because a response you posted once was the very first thing that popped into my mind. Someone once pointed out how the Stars old jerseys (the one with the star shaped stripes) didn’t line up with the logo, and you mentioned how you’d never be able to unsee that. Those jerseys have legitimately bugged me ever since.

Thats the problem with this place. There  are people here who pay an insane, almost unhealthy amount of attention to detail (That’s not an insult, either. That’s what we do). There have been several times someone has pointed out an inconsistent element to a uniform that I had completely overlooked, and it becomes pretty much the only thing I can focus on after that. Y’all have basically ruined stripes for me.

When I was a teenager and first started lurking here, I used to play sports video games all the time and would always choose the "coolest" uniforms for each team. (mono black Eagles, gold 49ers, red Pirates alt, etc.) Then I started hearing things like 'BFBS' and 'modern classic' for the first time and I was definitely influenced by members' opinions because I had never heard terms like this before. I started choosing more traditional choices as a result. I figured everyone else here was an expert "in the field" and an adult (and to teenage me, an adult's opinion is gospel). Then I grew up, and realized most adults are dumbasses and their opinions mean squat. I don't play video games nearly as much (and I hate any mono black look now) but I'll pick those mustard sabretooth alts for the Preds everytime.

I started out like you did, then saw how nice traditional uniforms could look. The difference between me and the rest of this board is that I like both styles and I don't hate anything remotely modern.

Eh, I wouldn't say so much "influence" as "attention to minutiae."  It's the graduated noticing of detail within a community of similar interests/hobbies.

This right here. There's nothing wrong with liking a hockey jersey with no hem stripes while also liking the Blackhawks jersey.
