Will the MASL Sockers continue though?

That was the thought in Seattle, that the team had to be another name and that the original Sounders would continue in something like the USL. But the fans pushed hard for the Sounders and got a version of it (Sounders FC instead of just Sounders). Granted having the old Sounders' owner be a part of the new MLS team was vital to allowing it to happen.

And, alas, the old Sounders never stuck around. They ceases once the MLS team arrived. Maybe San Diego ownership brings in the current MASL ownership and they do a similar thing... Sockers FC for the USL team.

The Sounders transferred their USL franchise to the Kitsap Pumas before they joined MLS. I think the USL and MLS weren't expected to coexist in Seattle.

I imagine that this scenario would only happen in SD if the current Sockers ownership thought that the USL would replace all the interest in MASL. However, outdoor and indoor soccer seem to fill very different niches in the US, so the question is whether they'd come to that conclusion.

I totally understand your sentiment, though! I'm really glad we kept the Sounders name, and I'd love for the Seattle NHL team to use the Thunderbirds brand!

from their website: DOES THE TEAM HAVE A NAME?

No, and in fact, the real question is “what do you want the Club’s name to be?”

This is a club that will be built from the grassroots up; ultimately it will be the San Diego community that will decide not only the Club’s name but what they want this Club to represent.

We all know San Diego is a unique city, both in its residents and as a place. It can mean something special to each of us, but there are also parallel stories and shared experiences that can be communal.

Starting in Summer 2019, the Club will engage and listen to the community through a series of events, workshops and online surveys for those values and characteristics that make San Diego the unique place it is.

We’ll engage some talented local designers to consider all these elements, stories and suggestions and produce something which truly resonates and represents our region. And because a club’s crest is a symbol worn over our hearts, it will be a symbol for San Diego that all of us will be proud to wear.

...What’s that?

A bad joke that the team took seriously.

If they won't bring back the "Sockers" name, which I doubt, then I would hope they go with something that speaks well to the Hispanic population in SD:

Atlético San Diego

San Diego Azteca FC (or CF for Club de Futbol)

San Diego Santos FC

San Diego Frontera FC

Whale Vagina SC  (Had to)

San Diego Classy FC

I'm on board with this one.

I would love to see brown and gold, as I rather like this trend of teams in the same market wearing similar colors. But if not, pacific blue and gold like the old Chargers would work.

From what I can gather, those who signed up for the newsletter regarding season tickets were contacted by the team about names, colors and such.

Also those who attended Women World Cup or Men's Gold Cup watch parties in San Diego where Warren Smith and Landon Donovan were in attendance also gave proposals.

Looks like it's all done locally and not over the internet/social media, at least so far.

They are actively asking you for input to the teams colors and name, you might as well give them logo/uniform ideas along with it ;)

This Board does have a lot of very talented and creative minds.

I like FC San Diego. I understand the SC tie to Sockers but if they aren't going to be the Sockers, just name it properly... FC.

Mission San Diego has a nice ring to it. An appropriate name for a USL club with great ties to the missions in California and a double meaning for missions (goal or important assignment). Brown and yellow would be a perfect color scheme for this name too.

USL SAN DIEGO ANNOUNCES COMMUNITY TEAM IDENTITY PROCESS

  • USL San Diego has officially launched a community outreach program to engage San Diegans in the process of building an identity for the team, including its values, the team’s name, the kit colors, the team crest worn over players’ hearts and all those unique qualities that represent what the team stands for.
  • To date, the club has held four listening sessions with people throughout the San Diego region to explore why they love San Diego, what makes them proud to call San Diego home and what they want to see in their professional sports teams.
  • They want to obtain authentic, local feedback on everything from the club’s name and crest to the start date and core values
  • The team plans to launch an official community survey early next month.

You can provide them with your thoughts/feedback/ideas/designs by these channels:

While they are focusing on local feedback, they are open to outside feedback as well.

Sent them a link to an San Diego name/colors/logo thread on the (in)famous BigSoccer message boards.

Would love to see creative input from these boards to flow into the teams identity, like it was the case with USL's Sacramento Republic!

I saw Warren about a week ago and mentioned to him how popular brown and gold was for the Padres. He said he had heard that a few times before, and that brown seemed to be a hit the last time he did this kind of work with a pro club.

In other words, you're welcome.

St. Pauli from Germany and the Vancouver Whitecaps (alternate kit) in the early 10s are the only teams I remember having brown jerseys/uniforms.

Brown isn't the easiest color to pair with. Maybe a yellow/orange/red and white.

Wouldn't be thrilled by those colors, but they aren't the worst either.

Personally would prefer a blue (whether it's navy or sky blue), a "sun" color (yellow, orange, gold) and white.

You've got the most successful team in the history of the league using basically those same colors just north of you. I have a hard time seeing that as feasible.

IMO that would only be an issue if they'd choose to go with white as primary, and similar navy/gold as secondary/tertiary colors.

Examples: similar or same colors, very different look.
