San Diego Loyal SC.

That’s... Um, well. It’s something, alright.

Maybe it’ll grow on me?

Not a bad name given the history of sports teams in this town other than the Padres being anything but loyal. Colors are a bit much (ie overloaded) if appropriate to the SD is superior theme they were going for. I’ll reserve final judgement until I see it on the kit though.

Much better name than 1904 and arguably even Sockers though so points for that.

I actually got a glimpse at a few designs they were working on for this several weeks ago (one was BEAUTIFUL, but I don’t think they could get clearance with the name they wanted. At least, that’s my assumption), and this was one that was included. I only gave it a cursory glance though because I figured it had to be a supporters group logo or something. Never at any point did I think they were going to use the name “Loyal” as the team name.

I get what they were were trying to do, and this group has been successful with more unique names before (IE: Republic), but this one just doesn’t work. It’s clunky as all hell and feels REALLY forced.

I don’t really hate the logo, but it does feel like an early 2000s surf shop brand. That’s actually rather fitting for San Diego, even. There’s just a LOT going on there, and it’s still somehow boring.

Had they just used that round SD Mark (which is part of what I saw in another package), it would’ve been a lot better. Sometimes, especially with soccer crests, less is more.

What was the other name?

I mean I get loyal. It’s got to be a direct jab at the now hated in San Diego Chargers. But honestly I was not expecting it even if it makes some sense. I agree on clunky though, particularly with the SC. Drop that and it would be better, and would clean up the logo a little.

@Bucfan56 please share all details you can about the team identity process, other designs/names. even if it's just in text form.

Would be much appreciated!

Looking forward to support and represent San Diego as they finally have a pro soccer (outdoor) team after what feels like an eternity.

I will say the logo looks better when not paired with that garish background

I don’t really have a whole lot (and some of it I can’t really share, just out of respect), but I think that there were other (I think better) names in consideration, at least at one point in the process. Copyright issues prevented at least one of them from happening.

That round SD Mark at the top was prominent in one of the designs I saw. That may still end up being in play (I’m guessing) for the kit crest? I can’t say for sure because I don’t know. Also, I have my suspicions that the shape being “inspired” by the architecture of the area came from something else they were trying to do but had to back away from.

I’ll say this, though. If the Mission of your front office is to find a good name, you had better hope that there isn’t some obscure soccer club somewhere already using that name. And if there is, hopefully you find out about it early in the process.

So if they ever become MLS' 5th California Team, would that be their name?

Is there even room for two lower level soccer teams in San Diego?

There won’t be two for long. 1904 FC has been seeing decreasing returns game over game. And they only had about 2000 come out for the opener. Tonight should be their final home game ever by all rights.

Thank you @Bucfan56 🙂

Sorry for pestering you with Q's

Do you know (some of) the other name's that weren't possible. If so can you share them?

I'd love for the SD soccer ball/sun to be the secondary logo/word mark, even tough it's nothing special design wise.

For baseball caps and such, but especially since they don't include the name.

the Spanish influenced top crest shape is a nice touch, the Coronado bridge curve at the bottom is a marketing speak however.

I was really hoping they would allow the 2-3 finalist names to be voted on by fans, especially as the crest design and team name aren't really linked together that much at all IMO. Obviously after vetting them prior for trademarks.

Any info regarding the uniform colors in the stream or from other sources?

a Werder Bremen-like green jersey with orange accents/sleeves and white shorts would be kinda neat if they focus on the green.

Hope for one of the uniforms to be primarily white and orange/green accents though.

Plus Loyal FC is smart by playing at Torero Stadium, so if they have 2,000 there, it wouldn't look too bad as it does for 1904 FC playing at the former Qualcomm Stadium.

No kidding. Here was the entire crowd tonight at the 1904 game...
