M4One 1,440 Posted February 13, 2019 I just listened to a little clip of Brian Burke, former GM of the Ducks, on the radio talking about changing the Ducks' name. He was asked during his GM interview by the owners about the name and he said he would change it to something associated to the military because there are a lot of military bases around Anaheim. He would have changed the name to Patriots, or Minutemen, or Warriors. He even had a design firm come up with some new designs. The owners obviously said no to the name change, but Burke did get some changes like dropping of the Mighty and the new colours.

Still MIGHTY 3,835 Posted February 13, 2019 What a miserable human being. Thanks for the Cup, but take your truculence, belligerence, pugnacity and shove it. Anaheim/Orange County aren't military towns in the same way that San Diego is, for example. Yes, you have Camp Pendleton to the south between OC and San Diego, but I wouldn't say it's a military culture. You have a small operations thing in Seal Beach, and there was the El Toro Marine Air Base but that's long long long since closed down and turned into the Irvine Great Park (hell, the Ducks just opened their brand new practice rink on the old site). It's there, but not anywhere near enough to justify the Patriots or Warriors. And Minutemen? In Boston, maybe. Dropping the Mighty? Despite my username, sure, that's fine. But to say people "loathed" it? Or to say the uniforms sucked? Seems like plenty of people have clamored for lately. They sell like hotcakes. I don't think people should be taking any fashion advice from a man who can't tie a neck tie. Also, did he not see D3: The Mighty Ducks? The Warriors lost and were renamed the Ducks!
neo_prankster 3,430 Posted February 13, 2019 If Burke is still out there working at an NHL front office...I dunno what to say guys. He sounds like a real psycho.

My sentiments exactly. Also; thanks for my years of frustration with this team's branding, you berk.
mcj882000 1,077 Posted February 14, 2019 More evidence that the guy who banned Brass Bonanza from Whalers games when he was their GM has always been a boring fart who hates anything fun. To branch off into a broader thing about the Ducks' identity, I actually don't hate their black & orange jerseys, I think they look quite good and wouldn't mind them just sticking the recoloured Wild Wing logo on them and calling it a day. On a sidenote I have a Ducks' fan friend who likes the Wild Wing logo (the old orange alt especially) and the old "Mighty Ducks" name but who hates the old jade & eggplant colour scheme. I can't say I entirely agree with him, but I do like the black & orange more at the moment. (Although I do hate the 25th anniversary alt, the team should've learned from the 2003-2006 alt that jade & eggplant don't work with black.)
the admiral 29,103 Posted February 14, 2019 Those famous Anaheim Minutemen. What a dork.
FiddySicks 11,359 Posted February 14, 2019 What a dork was my natural reaction to this, so I posted it. Then I noticed that Admiral said the exact same thing, so I’ll change it up a bit. What a goddamn dweeb.

All military all the time guys really are annoying, especially if they never served. I used to have a neighbor like this and he was the absolute worst. All of his clothes were oversized fatigues he got at the BX (not even sure how he got them as he was about Tank’s size), and he blabbed relentlessly about all of the “confirmed and unconfirmed kills” he had when he was in the military (considering his age, this would’ve been around the time of Desert Storm so, lol). I probably took more joy than I should’ve when his mom outed him to everyone that he was never in the military, and never even tried to join. His sad excuse was that he was “secret special ops” and even his family couldn’t know because it was just so top secret. Why are are people like this?
twi 380 Posted February 14, 2019 Warriors? Too generic, would have been a downgrade from the more unique Ducks, Mighty or otherwise. Minutemen? Interesting, but don’t think this name works outside of a New England locale. Patriots? No. The success of the NFL version has made it impossible to brand a team as such now. So while we got that weird, tiny script of a crest and very muted colors for a while it seems that was a best case scenario. Except for staying Mighty, imo.
mcj882000 1,077 Posted February 14, 2019 "Anaheim Patriots" and "Anaheim Warriors" would've both been non-starters even if the owner was ready to embrace a full change - the former due to the aforementioned NFL team and the latter due to the NBA team that plays 400 miles north of them. And "Anaheim Minutemen" would've just been dumb and lame, and not even in the campy fun way "Mighty Ducks" was.
Jer15 1,038 Posted February 14, 2019 I know it was past the Disney ownership at that point but this is all I think of when I read "Anaheim Minutemen"

monkeypower 3,127 Posted February 14, 2019 Burke's just such a ducking pinhead. Patriots and Warriors are obviously no-go's as already stated in this thread and I feel Minutemen is so tied to New England, it's just not going to work in Southern California, especially in Anaheim. He didn't like Mighty Ducks because of the Disney and the childish non-truculent branding, but going with his forced rah-rah American military shtick would have been more tired and stupid. The mascot would have just been Al Pacino from Scent of a Woman screaming "Hoo-ah" and Burke would have loved it. What a loser.
