MLS Nashville unveils logo

As someone who will probably be a "charter" fan of the MLS version of Nashville SC, or who at least expects to have an easier time backing that club than any other MLS team to date, here are the short and the long of my very overdue assessment of the team's MLS visual identity.

The Short

I love the MLS team's crest.  I hate the MLS team's colors.

The Long

The good news is that Nashville SC's first crest as an MLS club is a refreshly unique and bold design when the colors are not taken into consideration.  The highly stylized capital N that dominates the crest, the font used for the team's name, and the emblem's octagonal shape combine to form a look that, as I see it, has much more of a "major-league" polish than does the crest that Nashville SC has used as a USL club (although the USL team's logo is itself a design that catches my eye easily and pleasantly).  Another thing that I admire about the MLS Nashville SC crest is that the overall emblem (again, the colors notwithstanding) and particularly the stylized N would look right at home on the label of any of the many records produced over the years by Nashville's music industry.

The bad news is that the "electric gold" and "acoustic blue" that are set to serve as Nashville SC's maiden MLS colors are, both individually and together, among the most repulsively drab colors ever used by a North American professional sports team.  The yellow is washed out to the point that I have come to regard "electric" as a disturbingly ironic choice of adjective.  The blue, meanwhile, is not only too dull for my tastes, but also too close to purple to to be easy on my eyes.  The only justification that I can fathom for such a color scheme -- and a poor justification at that -- is that MLS and/or Nashville SC's investors/operators have been desperate to prevent the new club from copying the Los Angeles Galaxy's particular hues of yellow and dark(er) blue; if that has indeed been the case, then I prefer that the MLS incarnation of Nashville SC switch to a color scheme that deviates from the apparently emerging "Nashville stereotype" of a pairing of yellow and a shade of blue that is dark enough to fit the "navy" label.

Two other supposed motives for the Houston Dynamo name were a desire to pay homage to at least one former Houston professional soccer team that was nicknamed the Dynamos and an attempt at a show of appreciation for the strong presence of energy-related companies and industries (especially in the realms of petroleum and natural gas, obviously) in Houston's economy.

As for Nashville's MLS club, had that organization needed to reuse, or otherwise pay tribute to, the name of a Nashville-based professional soccer team that existed before the USL Nashville SC did, I would have preferred that the team be called Nashville Diamonds FC, in honor of the admittedly short-lived Nashville Diamonds of the defunct American Soccer League.  I think that the Nashville Diamonds name is the classiest and most polished moniker of any of the pro soccer clubs that played in Nashville before the 2010s, especially in comparison to such longer-lasting brands as the Nashville Metros and the Tennessee Rhythm (two names that were used at different times by the same soccer team).  In addition, a Diamonds brand for a Nashville team has the potential to form a subtle association with the glitz and glamour that can result from stardom as a musician who records in Nashville.

It's also worth noting that the Dynamo name came to be right as the league's shift toward European-inspired naming styles was emerging and nobody seemed to really get the hang of it. The Dynamo came to be the same year as Real Salt Lake.

Also worth remembering: They weren't supposed to be the Dynamo. They originally came out as Houston 1836. #history!

Loved that logo when it came out too. But they were afraid of turning off Mexican fans with the 1836 moniker.

Another interesting footnote to that chapter in MLS history. This 2006 Houston Chronicle story cited anonymous sources with inside info that the team indicating what it's permanent name would be:

Quote

A person close to the situation said "Lonestar" or "Lone Star" looks to be the team's next name. Choices such as Apollos or Mustangs also are being considered, the person said.

Dynamo isn’t a very good name, but MAN is it better than 1836 would’ve been. Reno’s dumbass USL team is called Reno 1868 and it’s basically just another reason to mock them.

I don't know. I kind of like that naming convention. When the survey was going around seeking name suggestions for St. Louis' MLS team, I submitted St. Louis 1764, among several other options. For a city so steeped in history, it seemed appropriate. Alternatively, for a city that leans too much on its history at the expense of looking forward, it's maybe not appropriate.

Anyway, I liked it. Better than St. Louis Legacy or LazerSnakes.

Movement. Change. Energy. Speed. Abstract buzzword semi-fitting for its host city chosen in order to give the team name a seemingly 'European' flair.

Cool thanks, it’s always sounded very bush league to me, but I suppose if I were a soccer fan it wouldn’t so much.

I really do hope Reno becomes the feeder team for the Republic just for the reactions from the Reno supporters 😈🤣

As of now, that’s actually the plan!

The St. Louis LazerSnakes. I kinda like it!

Love it! Googled "Lazersnakes" just for fun and this came up: I think the team needs to pay this brewery and use this snake as the logo, lol.

Image result for LazerSnakes

Barring that, this seems like a GTOV entry.

GTA United(USA) 2015 + 2016 USA Champions/Toronto Maroons (ULL)2014, 2015 + 2022 Gait Cup Champions/Toronto Northmen (TNFF)

Aside:  I really, really like the art style that Three Floyds uses for their bottles, six packs, etc.

I wonder if you could turn anything like this into a workable sports team brand.  The color scheme would be a lot of fun
