Um you’d just buy a customized jersey and put their name and number on it, I’ve seen how certain words can’t be used but how are they gonna know that their aren’t Phillies fans with the last name trout and favorite number 27. I feel like it would be too hard for any site to control based on all the names and numbers there are.

I think there’s actually a database for those types of things, at least through Fanatics and Locker Room and places like that. You can definitely find a workaround to it, I’m sure, but that combination of name and number is going to usually raise some red flags. For most customization shops, they have to lease the rights to the official letter/numbers they put on jerseys, and one of the stipulations in that leasing contract is that you really can’t customize current player name/number combinations on other team’s jerseys. A lot of times you can’t bypass this unless you get approval from the vendor. If you get caught doing that (Trout’s name and number on a Phillies jersey would definitely fall into this category), the shop can actually have that right pulled. 

 

Admittedly, it can be somewhat hard to track this, and some stores get away with using unlicensed lettering. But that’s becoming less and less so now that merchandise has basically been monopolized among two or three companies. The major four leagues only allow certain vendors to even do licensed customization work any more.

Back to uniforms... The Phillies would have been better off dropping the white altogether (at least on the roads) rather than make it so thin that it contrasts too much against the outdated sleeve trim.  I'm really not liking the photos I'm seeing of the "new" jersey.  It actually looks just like the Russel replica I got back in '93, except that back then the sleeve trim was more restrained so it looked more cohesive.

And it's been that way for years; even before Fanatics took over everything, a friend of mine tried to order a jersey for his favorite team with his name and birthdate on the back. (Corny decision, yes, but stay with me.) The shop wouldn't let him -- turns out there was a player elsewhere in the majors with his last name AND even used that number.

I’m happy for Trout getting the contract and dough he deserves, and I’m happy for Angels fans that they get to keep their all-world talent for pretty much the duration of his all-world-ness. I’m not sure if paying one dude $36m/year is necessarily a formula for a championship, but it’s how baseball is nowadays so you can’t criticize the Angels too much for this deal, if at all. Good on them.

Historicay what would make you think I would? This clearly locks him up for at least four or five years. 

 

His is desire to come “home” was legit, but his intelligence to take guaranteed money when available won out. Good on him. 

 

I called the Cliff Lee signing in ‘11 when the Phillies were mentioned by exactly zero teams as a competitor - I even said that from what I heard from my sources that he’d take less money if they offered - and he did. The angels knew the same was true here, so they did what needed to be done.
