According to the Marlins, they basically had Pujols "signed" at one point before Anaheim swooped in with the no-trade clause. Fear of a teardown probably contributed to his decision as well, but I believe the team when they claim that the deal was super close to happening. Very sad to hear that he’s gone. I was was just recently thinking about another Angels pitcher, Nick Aidenhart, who died ten years ago this year. Still MIGHTY Posted July 1, 2019 Share Posted July 1, 2019 This sucks. Tyler Skaggs was 27, just married over the offseason, a SoCal kid who played ball at Santa Monica High School. He threw on Saturday, was scheduled to pitch in Texas on the Fourth of July. Skaggs is the third Angels player to die in-season in his 20s with Lyman Bostock (27) in 1978 and, the player that immediately came to my mind, Nick Adenhart (22) in 2009. Luis Valbuena wasn't with the team, he was released in August, but the Angels were his final team when he died in December. The Angels have had plenty of team deaths when you add in Mike Miley, Dick Wantz and Chico Ruiz. Not to mention cases like Donnie Moore and Tommy Hanson... Too much for any one franchise. Skaggs posted this just yesterday as the team took off for this Texas roadtrip: This is devastating. I'm utterly shocked. 27 is too young for anyone to pass away. Tyler Skaggs seemed like a really fun, kind and humble dude. Yankees need rotation help, because they don't have a reliable 4th starter as it is, and if Severino can't make it back (that it's halfway through the season and he's still not in rehab is hugely concerning), then they need two starting pitchers, and at least one of them a high-end starter at that. They're in good shape at the moment but nothing they do right now indicates what they will do in October. At this point, I still think the Astros have to be considered the AL favorite; if those two were to meet, the Astros have the two best starting pitchers going out of both rosters. I think their playoff experience is going to serve them well. I also think that having dealt with losing in the biggest moments in the past two seasons will come in handy, too. They seem really determined this year and I'd be kind of afraid to run into them come playoff time. Not to mention, they ditched their big clownish idiot in the outfield. Unless they turn into the 2012 or 2014 Kings, I'm worried about their chances. Granted, yes, I think getting rid of Puig was good for clubhouse morale. And last year they weren't really all that healthy. Sigh... I just want to see them win one title before I die. (I was only seven months old in October '88, that hardly counts).
