A couple of years ago, Game 7 of the Yankees-Astros ALCS was on FS1 while a Kansas-TCU college football game was on Fox.

 

If that doesn't tell you where the priorities (and maybe Big XII contract stipulations) at Fox lay, then I dunno what does. MLB has allowed their television partners to treat the sport like a second-rate product, so who can be surprised if that's what we're getting? MLB isn't a priority with any of the three television partners it has.

I watched an inning. They sandwiched in some synergistic sponsored content ad, followed by a very strange vignette of Yelich and Bellinger trading compliments in a portrait studio. It was awkward and cringey for everyone involved. Who's greenlighting this nonsense?

Angels tossed a combined no no on their first night back home after the death of Tyler Skaggs, while they were all wearing Skaggs 45 jerseys. 

 

This is why no matter how rough it’s been for baseball lately, I’ll always love this silly little game.

Incredible night to catch my first in-person no-hitter, huh?

 

From Tyler Skaggs’ mom tossing a perfect first pitch, to a 7-run first inning in a 13-0 win (Skaggs birthday is 7/13, Saturday), to Trout hitting a 454-foot home run in a No. 45 jersey, to the no-hitter (11th in Angels history, Skaggs’ high school number was 11 as worn by his brother tonight), to it being No. 45 everywhere you turned... it was a special night honoring the memory of Tyler Skaggs. Hell, I’m quite sure he was still on that field tonight.

 

It was emotional. I was emotional. Everything in the pre-game sent me to the waterworks with the video and the 45-second moment of silence. The no-hitter was something in itself, but the placing of all the jerseys on the mound... I mean, again, waterworks. There was just no stopping it.

 

I honestly still can’t believe what I witnessed. Baseball is funny. Sports are incredible.

 

We’re nasty. RIP 45.

I wish I could have made the trip down again to catch tonight's game. Went on a socal road trip with my dad to catch a few games. Caught Skaggs last start. Did the stadium tour the Monday morning he passed. Rip45

I caught the end of it on ESPN - that was a really cool moment with all the jerseys on the plate.  Really well done by the team - eeryone wearing 45 was a nice touch.

 

Now, emotions aside, are combined no-hitters really a big deal?  I always found it odd that the guy that clinches it is a pitcher that threw one... maybe two innings, and they all celebrate around him.  The Phillies had one a few years ago, and I was like "meh".  It's not like after a traditional no hitter where the pitcher really did something great and they celebrate with him when it's over... it's kinda like just another win but with a 0 in the opponent's hit column.

Last night’s was just two pitchers. Taylor Cole was the “opener” (I honestly hate this trend) for two innings, and Felix Pena pitched the final seven. If you’re going to have a combined no-hitter, this is the way to go.

 

But yes, the more pitchers involved, the less special it feels to me. It’s still an accomplishment, but more and more pitchers diminish it. Last night’s was special for extra outside reasons, so I’m never going to knock this one. But I agree with your sentiment.

I feel slightly different about combined no hitters. Obviously the preferred is 1 guy getting it done. But it is impressive that multiple different guys can come in and still shut down an offense. 

 

How many times have we seen a starter come out after the 7th dealing, just to have some reliever start giving up the game cause he just didnt have it. Plus for a hitter sometimes seeing someone new after being shutdown by the other guy is what you need to get your bat going.

The Rays almost made history to pull off a combined perfecto against Baltimore. But, a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth and a run spoiled the party. But, Tampa still managed to hold them off, and win 4-1.

I'm surprised that the Giants are having their first hot streak since the first half of 2016. It's a nice change-of-pace. While I'm sure MadBum and Smith will be on the trading block, it'll be nice to send them out winners. 

 

Also, Jonah Keri was granted bail following charges of domestic violence. Ouch.
