If you told me a few months ago someone named Gio Urshella would put the Yankees in first place in the AL East over the Rays by getting a walkoff hit against the latter team I would say you are super crazy.

Now if you told me this same team is running away with the division.... And in the HFA race with the Dodgers... I don't even know anymore. You are a God at predictions.

A sad story got even sadder.

Tyler Skaggs’ autopsy: Fentanyl, oxycodone and alcohol led to death by choking on vomit

The family released a statement, emphasis mine.

Quote

“We are heartbroken to learn that the passing of our beloved Tyler was the result of a combination of dangerous drugs and alcohol. That is completely out of character for someone who worked so hard to become a Major League Baseball player and had a very promising future in the game he loved so much.

“We are grateful for the work of the detectives in the Southlake Police Department and their ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding Tyler’s death. We were shocked to learn that it may involve an employee of the Los Angeles Angels. We will not rest until we learn the truth about how Tyler came into possession of these narcotics, including who supplied them. To that end, we have hired attorney Rusty Hardin to assist us.”

Well, :censored:

I mentioned here when this first broke that I had season tickets to the D Backs in 2013, and Skaggs was probably mine and @Cujo's favorite part of that season. I went to a good handful of those games with a good buddy I met at ASU. He died of a fentanyl overdose last November. On his 27th birthday  🙁

It's :censored:ing disgusting how these sports leagues would rather players get addicted to Opioids, then smoke a f***ing plant.

If nothing else, it really does help highlight what an issue this is, both in & out of sports.

Unfortunately this is an issue that will only be solved by the government. I have 0 confidence any league will take the plunge and just legalize cannabis before it's done Federally.

I don't have all that much faith in that, considering the federal government created the problem in the first place with the useless war on drugs.

With all the injuries Skaggs dealt with this is just another case of the irresponsible prescribing of opiates.

My wife refused Vicodin after an appendectomy years ago. Looking back I don’t blame her.

I have only been prescribed opioids once in my life when I had my wisdom teeth taken out in college.

I won't go into an entire history of drugs I've done in my life, but that one pill got me higher than any other substance I've ever taken in my life.

You don't feel anything. The only sensation you have is a vague awareness of the environment around you while being completely zoned out. Its closest I think I've ever come to an out of body experience.

I only took one pill but was prescribed around 20. At the time I thought the amount was unnecessary, but looking back on it, I think the prescription was.

Had I not be given them, I would have been in searing pain for a day, but I would have gotten over it. I can easily see how someone can talk themselves into thinking they need this drug to function if they have something that's giving them chronic pain.

I’m going to say if it was fentanyl I don’t think he got it from someone in the angles. I got a bunch of buddies who are cops and the main thing they find fentanyl with is laced in heroin which is an opiate which he also had in his system. Dude probably was shooting up in all honesty. The opiate epidemic is going to kill this generation and the introduction of fentanyl is going to be the leading cause.

I had tonsil surgery a few months back that went very poorly. I was prescribed liquid oxycodone and learned that mixing that plus acetaminophen (as directed by my doctor), got me feeling pretty good. Or at least good enough to move past the pain in my throat.

Luckily, I was able to stop taking the meds cold after my three-week prescription. Had I had lingering pain over a longer period of time? Who knows.

Is marijuana legal in MLB? If not, it should be. People get hooked on pain meds because they're suffering and the medication takes them away from that. Marijuana doesn't wreck nearly the same damage on your body and isn't addictive. What exactly is the delay?

No sport is going to legalize Marijuana until it is decriminalized federally.

Which will almost certainly not happen so long as big Pharma are lining politicians pockets  (They stand to lose A LOT) from the pot industry if it's ever completely legal.

I'm not going to get into the whole reasoning as to why Marijuana is illegal, but Federal law overrides any CBA agreement, and Marijuana is a schedule 1 substance. People can feel however they want about that fact, but its still the reality of the situation.

The only thing Major League Baseball can realistically do is to make sure players are as knowledgeable as feasibly possible to the dangers of opioids. Anything more than that requires action beyond MLB's scope.

My hope is Skaggs death becomes a symbol of the need to make better legislation to combat the opioid crisis. Understanding and the need for better access to medical care are well-intended and positive steps, but it doesn't strike at the heart of the issue. If you're serious about change, you write a law, and you enforce it.

As far as Marijuana versus Opioids for treating pain, I've heard multiple people sing Marijuana's praises over Opioids.  But I've yet to listen to a single person talk about how they used to treat their pain with Marijuana, then switched to Opioids, and felt the change was for the better.

But remember, lurking in the background of legal pot is Big Ag.

They don’t have to “legalize” it. They just have to not test for it.

Then what happens when players get caught with it in states where it isn't legal?

Then they’ll get suspended for breaking the law. They didn’t have to bring the weed with them to a state where it’s still illegal so that’s on them.

This is exactly why no sport will legalize or "not test for it" until it's decriminalized.

Now you are asking players to remember exactly which states it's legal & illegal in?

Depending on the sport, they maybe be spending a few days or even weeks in places where it's illegal. How are they supposed to get by then?

No sport wants to handle the mess of allowing players to use substances like weed that's legality varies depending on the state they're in. When there job takes them to a new state every week.

Ain't no one going to have a more devastating defeat than the Mets tonight against the Nationals.

They scored 5 runs in the top of the 9th to make it 10-4. All they had to do was not give it away, but Edwin Diaz had other ideas. Mets give up 7, including a Kurt Suzuki 3 run walk off homer. 11-10 Nationals win.
