Wasn't there also no chance the Cardinals won the World Series in 2011? Or the Mets won the 1969 World Series? It seems very every year, less and less of these "predictions" about how teams will do come true.

I mean, I hope I’m wrong. But that 2011 Cards team would probably slaughter this Giants team.

I've been to around 200 MLB games (most of them Phillies games), and witnessed countless home runs, including Mike Schmidt, Jim Thome, and most of Ryan Howards (home) 58 HRs in 2006.  I say with no hyperbole that I've never seen a ball jacked out of the yard in person quite like Harper's yesterday.  Most of Howard's generated the "holy :censored: " reaction, but mostly for the sheer height and depth.  This one was a whole other level - it was 465', but looked like it could have gone way more had the second deck not interrupted its trajectory.

So... let’s rank all the teams that are still unbeaten:

1. Phillies

While I'm not a Phillies fan, and I admittedly can't stand Bryce Harper, it was a lot of fun being at CBP for opening day and Sunday Night Baseball (even if I froze my ass off Sunday night). Going to a game is much more fun when the crowd is 1. actually there and 2. invested in the team. The buzz around the park was a nice change of pace. Traffic still sucks.

Really interesting story about Bryce Harper's "negotiations" with the Nationals.

(my paraphrasing)

During a rain delay of an in-progress game in 2018, the owner called him into the office - while in full uniform - and handed him an envelope with a note saying they'd pay him $300M/10 years, with $100M deferred until 2052.  It's like the Bonilla deal on steroids.

He declined, so their next offer came in January 2019:  $250M/12 years, with some $ deferred until 2072!!

How the hell does that work?  300/10 isn't good enough, so you offer 250/12 as a counter?  With money deferred over 50 years?

This sounds like something you'd hear about during the College of Coaches Cubs days.

The Orioles have matched last year’s best winning streak, and won two series on the road. They didn’t do that until June last year. Maybe Brandon Hyde does know what he’s doing.

Nah, it’s just a bad team using up all their overachieving magic early in the season. Still cool to not totally stink right from the getgo, though.

Are they the only unbeaten team left? If so, they (and by 'they', I really mean Bryce Harper) sure made a point last night. Love the bat flip... still not the one Joey Bautista did in the playoffs, but it's up there.

Mariners can't even tank a season right. 5-1, and on pace to be 40-8.

Make it 7-1 now after last night... enjoy this while you can, man. You and I both know the other shoe is going to drop here and we Mariner fans are going to get punched in the nards rather quickly. It's what they do best.

I loved his bow to the right field fans... entirely composed of Phillies fans.  Other than his first at bat, it was a Phillies home game - just like games in DC were from '08-'12.

It's kinda funny - he seems like such a soft-spoken, humble, thoughtful, good guy in literally every interview I've heard since he's been signed, but then in between the lines he's a totally different person.  He actually made up special "handshakes" with literally every non-pitcher, and does them with everyone after home runs.  We'll see what happens when they go through the inevitable slump, but for now, by all accounts he's been an overwhelmingly positive influence to the team.

This is a road game:

This Ron Kulpa thing is an embarrassment to the tradition.

Also the Cubs are trash.

The 8-2 Mariners (currently up 7-1 over Chicago in the top of the 3rd) are murdering the baseball and scoring buckets of runs.

They'll eventually cool off -- right?? -- but this is fun for now.

Odds are... ohhhhh yeah:

Honestly, why do the Mariners have fans? Why do the Mariners even exist at this point? Yeesh.

Also, in breaking news, Mike Trout is very good.

I ask old-time M's fans the same question. Their allegiance to the team in face of all logic is pretty adorable.
