Not that I'm fond of the NFL's creepy nationalism cult either, but I think the last couple pages of this thread show that any perceived shift in the Jets' brand away from jet-setting was as much to do with wider shifts in culture/perception of air travel than just a kneejerk military thing. Nobody's had a positive thought about commercial air travel in decades. I'm told JFK and Laguardia were glamorous and luxurious at one point but that, needless to say, was several eras of New York Jets uniforms ago.

really good point, its not an industry you want to be aligned with at all. though i mentioned a speed themed, Futurism styled direction before, i imagine the reality will be much more ambiguous and thats the way it probably should be. just make a good football uniform.

Even though I think a fighter jet identity can be looked at as cool and fun without being "overly patriotic" or whatever, I believe jets in general are still interesting enough. Doesn't have to be military. The division rival Patriots already have that lane anyway.

You get old enough that “Top Gun” doesn’t seem so cool anymore, except maybe as a story of forbidden love between two young men in a world that can’t accept them. ?

I swear, the homoerotic subtext is the only thing in that film that hasn’t aged poorly.

The Jets could (and should) lean into a retro-futurism, go back to the birth of their franchise. Jets were glamourous then, not for themselves but for their global connections, their speed and their scope.  Better than feeding the nation’s boring military fetish.

im not exactly a fan of Top gun either, but what kind of dork doesnt think fighter jets are cool?

And don’t get me wrong, I am down for a little Tom/Pete action.  Just better to fast-forward through all the nationalism porn to get to the good kind. ;)

LOL. really, i agree 100%. i dont even like how the Jags have leaned into military inspiration, but if the Jets came out and said "our new helmets are inspired by flight helmets of fighter pilots" i think i'd be into it.

Honest question.. Can they not be fighter jet themed without the hokey patriotism stuff? I mean, it's close enough to "built-in" to draw on it when appropriate, but also avoidable in the grand scheme of things..

If the redesign was still under the watch of the previous owner, Woody Johnson, and not his brother for damn sure it would have been more military themed I feel. Woody is friends with Trump and he was thankfully shipped to France or England as the ambassador. His brother Chris doesn't seem to tow the same line, and has come off very well since taking over. That take over probably prompted the re-redesign they mentioned in the teaser video.

Considering the entire NFL just finished its “8th Annual Stolen Valor Cosplay Weekend!”, I’m leaning towards “No” as the answer to your question.

Seems like if they do make it military themed it would essentially be ripping off the Winnipeg Jets’ idea.

Smart is believing half of what you hear. Genius is knowing which half.

(And random off-topic question: are the Jets still "Long Island's team"? I rememeber from the time I spent up there it seemed the "city" teams were the Giants and Rangers in football and hockey, respectively, while it seemed the Jets and Islanders [well obviously] were more LI's.)

eh. the geographic breakdowns have really shifted a lot. fans move, of course the jets moved (from queens to new jersey), as did  the islanders (nassau county to brooklyn and soon back to nassau county). plus, the giants have won four super bowls since the mid-80s, and the jets haven't gotten to one. the rangers won a cup in '94, and the islanders have won one playoff series since then. winning definitely changes that stuff, too.

let's put it this way: generally speaking, there's still a good collection of jets fans out here on long island. instead of sharing metlife with the giants, i think the jets should have built a stadium next to citi field. but c'est la vie. there are plenty of rangers fans here. as we've seen from the brooklyn attendance, islanders fan base is primarily here on the island.

Not the first NFL team to be clearly, unequivocally named after a Broadway musical:

Memories, when those fonts were thought cool, I can laugh at the old days, with weird half helmet stripes...

Seriously, I loved the OG Panthers script, and the fact that something so obviously a product of the '90s lasted into the 2010s.
