Rite of Spring 2019: The Chase for the Stanley Cup

When the refs make calls that work in your teams favor, all of a sudden it’s “you got to play through bad calls man.” But when they don’t, it’s all “Bettman and his dastardly henchmen are at it again.”

When did I say this? First of all my team is Columbus and was not affected by this San Jose BS. There are calls on both sides (San Jose and Vegas/Colorado/St Louis) that i dont agree with but the San Jose ones are blatently obvious. The fact that the NHL has done little to nothing to correct the issues with the officiatings blown calls is a disgrace to the game. Thats all Im saying. Also no one likes "Bettman and his dastardly henchmen" and if you do you're clearly not a hockey fan.

A no-call on gloving a goal in and getting thrown out for cracking a guy's head open: folks, they're literally the same thing!

The Sharks should have been out a long time ago but the NHL keeps handing them gimmies. They got past Vegas and Colorado on blown calls and its continuing into the St Louis series. Its a clear fix by the NHL because they are so embarased that the top teams were eliminated in the first round that they didnt want low seeded teams playing for the cup. Carolina just imploded with Boston but each San Jose series has been a clear cheat by the NHL. Its disgusting.

So all you’re saying is the cheating was just so rampant and so obvious and so in-your-face that the weakest of the Big 4 has become an even larger disgrace in your eyes? Because the Sharks got calls that were just so egregious, no other team even comes close?

You sure do have a flair for the melodramatic kid, I’ll give you that. But honestly even bringing up Vegas and Colorado is such a tired partisan talking point at this junction that I’m sure you’d rather spend your efforts thumbing through Twitter and circle-jerking on how San Jose doesn’t deserve anything cause they’re conspiring with all the suits in Toronto.

Man if the Blues end up winning the series, that’s really gonna take the wind out of your SabresRule sails you got going on. Bummer.

In any sport, whenever officiating is the main subject of discussion after a game, it's never a good thing.

I understand that human error is a part of the game. But with at least two horrible calls that have cost teams games and series in a single playoff year, something needs to be done.

When did I say it was cheating, get your spectacles on, you aint seeing right. Blown calls affecting the outcome of the game is not cheating, its mistakes made that should have been corrected. Lets be real the NHL has gone downhill since the lockout. Other teams got blown calls this postseason but San Jose is the one that sticks out more than the others. Lets leave it at that.

I aint a kid, sweetheart. No melodramatics here, I call BS like I see it and if you dont agree with it thats okay. You are entitled to your wrong opinion.

You got spinters in the windmills of your mind. Just stop.Ill be happy if the Blues win the series. They are far more deserving to go to the cup than San Jose. San Jose deserves a trip to the cup again but this year is not that year.

In the Sharks-Vegas series the officials tried to call penalty (high-sticking to the face of Pavelski) that they didn't see (and didn't happen) and those refs/officials didn't work the next round or any ensuing round (barring necessity).

So tonight, all four officials didn't see the hand pass by Meier, so they couldn't call it, Nyquist gets the puck, passes it to Erik Karlsson and he pots it in the net.

The NHL has clearly told the officials you cannot guess, if you don't see it, you can't call it.  Does that take the sting away from the Blues or other hockey fans upset at the non-call? Of course not, but I guess you could say that the NHL and officials tried to correct at least one of their errors from the first round and it still bites them in the rear.

I only have issue with people saying the Sharks were handed Game 7 against Vegas. They got an opportunity and capitalized. They were not awarded 4 free goals. They were not awarded the OT goal.

Tonight is different, the non-call on the hand pass led directly to the game-winning goal.  I'll take the win, but as a Sharks fan, it doesn't feel right.

Oh please. Yes, calls have been in the Sharks' favor, but that doesn't make it illegitimate.

This is the last face many a man has seen before death. The picture is the last visage witnessed by those who have fallen to the hillbilly's wrath. He can end you with as much as a single blow.

He will SKATE on the FROZEN BLOOD of the NON-BELIEVERS!!

Yeah, it's nice to see the Sharks in this position, but I wish it was cleaner.

It's been downhill since the Las Vegas expansion diluted the talent pool and the puck-chuck system really took hold. It's a league of second-liners now.

I just gone done watching the game, and I can't be bothered to go back and read the last couple of pages (it is nearly 4am after all and I'm still awake for some g-d forsaken reason), but I'm sure in all the hysteria of how the game ended that it's totally forgotten that the Blues got away with an obvious delay of game penalty on Perron that didn't get caught by the officials, only for Perron to immediately score two goals on the other end and give the Blues the lead to begin with. A lead they held until the final minute of regulation.

Yes, sure, missed call on the officials part, the handpass. I get it. Maybe lets be fair and say both teams benefitted from mistakes, 'cuz that's exactly what happened.

I was going to say But the Blues tied the game when they should've been on the penalty kill for the missed delay of game call, but there was a lot of shouting happening.

It sucks it ended that way because it was otherwise one of the best games in the playoffs. Too bad one of these teams has to lose to Boston.

I actually think either of these teams can take on the Bruins. They would be favorites, but, eh, let's call it 60/40 vs. St. Louis and 55/45 if the Sharks.

Both teams are far more likely than Carolina ever was. I was very unhappy when they beat the Capitals in overtime, and this was why.

My dream scenario is for Boston to win tonight and then get swept in the finals, which would mean the Penguins got swept by a team that got swept by a team that got swept by a team that got swept, which is way more embarrassing than just missing the playoffs, somehow. They should probably blow up the entire roster. Take 5 or 10 years off. Hell, go Full-Pirates and disappear for like 23 years. It'd be good for everybody.

I don't have particular hate for the Sharks any more than any other team that is a frustratingly good conference team that is getting in the way of a Stanley Cup. I also in no way think that the Sharks are "cheating." I also find it unlikely that the NHL has a coordinated effort to hand the WCF to San Jose, or even if the NHL power structure would prefer for the Sharks to win, it's highly unlikely that they directly and blatantly instructed refs to push calls the way of the Sharks on purpose.

I do think the refs are incompetent for missing the hand pass in the first place, I do think that because it was a part of a goal it should be reviewed by Toronto, I do think that if it's not reviewable that it's a major hole in the NHL rules that needs to be rectified, and I do think that it's embarrassing that the NHL is ignoring the issue by how they've answered reporters' questions with non-answers and how the NHL twitter account tweeted a gif of the goal that edited out the hand pass.

Two very important things that are being frustratingly overlooked in all of this:

1). These bad calls are overshadowing just how STUPIDLY clutch the Sharks have been at the absolute most important times this post season. It doesn’t even make any sense to me because they’ve dug themselves out of the grave more times this postseason than they ever have before. They should’ve been dead in the first round, and instead they’re two games from a Western title. I just can’t... like... who are these guys?

2). It’s the goddamn Sharks, people. They’re gonna ultimately find some spectacular and creative way to :censored: this all up in the end. So, what does it even matter? Bellyaching about it is a waste of time because they’ll “get theirs” eventually because that’s what prevents the space time continuum from tearing wide open and ending our pathetic existence. I mean, @Puckguy14 is a Sharks fan. It’s contractually written into the agreement that he’s not allowed to have non Wheel of Fortune related nice things.
