I mean, if there’s a justifiable reason to make a change, then go for it. There’s really nothing wrong with embracing a better understanding of history within the context of current times. It’s why I was in favor of the Wahoo change and think the Washington Professional Football Team should make wholesale changes. But the 49ers? Knowing California history as well as I do, I find that to be a bit of a stretch.

Whole tribes were wiped out and other Native Americans were taken as slaves during the gold rush.

Yeah of course, but you’re pretty much describing the very history of the United States. “Manifest Destiny” was awful for natives, but so was the very founding of this country by European settlers. While there are some negative connotations to representing that history, the nickname isn’t overtly racist like the others people have issues with.

I mean, :censored:, vikings were known for being brutally violent and destroying entire villages of innocent people. Raiders/Buccaneers/Pirates commandeered ships and threw the passengers overboard into the ocean. Cowboys have been depicted in popular culture as slaughtering groups of Indians for over a century now. Bengal tigers have killed people at zoos before.

Point is, where do you draw the line on what’s acceptable and what isn’t? If you’re going to take issue with a name like 49ers, you’re also going to have to re-evaluate a lot of other names that probably come across as rather innocuous.

Yeah this one is weird to me. I’ve legit NEVER heard this controversy. I guess I sort of get it, in the context that the entire west was a violent, dangerous, lawless place. But if we’re going that far with this, there are a TON of names we should probably take exception with.

More importantly, I think the issue with 49ers is that aside from being a school in California that was founded in 1949, that nickname has ZERO relevance to Long Beach State.  The mascot is Northern California figure who doesn't resemble your student body or their history anyway even before we unpack problematic aspects of white American settlement of California-pick something that appeals to them.

I gotta say though, hunting Native Americans like they were deer is the kind of thing that deserves some sort of special horrified acknowledgement.

So was scalping children while they were still living, so there goes the Chiefs, too.

I really don't disagree with you on all of this. We as a nation have a ton of issues about our past we need to reckon with. I just wonder if taking issue with the names of sports teams when they’re not overtly racist/prejudiced is really the best way to go about doing that.

Hell, I don’t even like the name 49ers anyway. They would be just as popular if they were named the SF Miners or Long Beach Gold Rush or whatever. But when it comes right down to it, don’t those ultimately depict the same history?

I’ll admit to being a bit biased here, too. I’m proudly a born and bred Californian who probably wouldn’t even exist if not for the gold rush of the mid 1800s. The “49ers” are sort of essential to my being, in some weird ways.

Speaking as a born and bred Californian, I have no problem abandoning names that glorify the violent and brutal history of this state.

Long Beach State Selects Sharks As New Mascot

May 12, 2019 - 18:51 PM

Six months after university leadership retired its controversial Prospector Pete mascot, California State University, Long Beach — also known as Long Beach State — announced the selection of “Sharks” as the new school mascot. The decision concluded a student-initiated process […]

Yup, that's where I am on this.

It's also why I suspect that the Padres tried to bury the Swingin' Friar logo, given that the Missions helped to exterminate Native American culture via forced assimilation.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This isn’t really a hill I want to die on. I get the negative side of the name, so I can accept the pushback. I personally think it’s a bit overblown, but I respect the opinions of those who don’t.

It’s kinda news to me that there is such a negative connotation to all of this, enough so that it seems to overshadow the rest of the history, but I can admit when I realize that there’s probably more I need to learn about it.

After rereading the article & seeing today's tweet regarding the change, I believe this all has been about the physical, costumed mascot.  Please correct me if I'm mistaken on this.  I had a hunch this was the case because both 'mascot' & 'nickname' mean the same & different thing.  People use them interchangeably.  For example, Iowa State's nickname is the Cyclones but the mascot is Cy, a cardinal but it's also commonly said the mascot is the Cyclones.

I take it the Prospector Pete logo is now defunct since a shark is or will represent the Pioneers instead.

I would think coming up with a different mascot would have been easier then changing the whole thing.

They should have extrapolated Dirtbags across the entire athletic department. How about the Lady Dirtbags and their mascot is a girl who wears Cookie Monster pajama pants and smokes.

This is what I would have done. Dirtbags is organic, unique to the school, and everything a good college nickname should be.

Sharks presents the same problem as 49ers, IMO... it's already attached to a pro team up the freeway.

Love picking up organic dirtbags at Lowe's, you pay a little more but it's much better than that genetically modified dirt.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

What were the problems with the name Dirtbags? Seemed unique to the school, right?

The problem with this name is the color choices are limited and predictable: dark blue, light blue, dark grey, light grey and teal.  If they really want to be bold and different they can do a bright turquoise accent color, but that's very unlikely.

In sports though, any color works...I've seen a red and light grey jaguar before. I think they should keep their colors the same, but always keep the shark black, not yellow/gold.

I'm not sure the women's volleyball (or basketball or soccer . . . ) team would want to be called the Dirtbags.

Dirtbags is a name that only works in the context of baseball. Naming the rest of your athletics after a literal description of a baseball field doesn't make any sense.

I've got a dribbble, check it out if you like my stuff; alternatively, if you hate my stuff, send it to your enemies to punish their insolence!
